Terrorism
Definition.-
Terrorims has two essential features
a.- Terrorists try to get or to increase the political
or territorial power.
b.- Their most used method is to spread the
sensation of terror in population in general,
so, they usually attack indiscriminately, that is,
they attack people choosen at random through
bombs, shots, kidnappings, extortions, etc.
Therefore, a psychopath or serial
killer who kill for pleasure is not a
terrorist .
Someone who kill people to steal
them is not a terrorist either
An inconvenient truth:
Any terrorist organization that get
importance has an important social
support too.
That is, without a certain level of social
support any terrorist organization could
not survive
Mass demostration in favor of ETA
(Basque terrorist organization) in the
Basque Country
Demostration in favor of FARC (Colombian terrorist group)
Any ideology, especially the most
radical ones (fascism, communism,
anarchism, nationalism, religious
radicalism, etc.), ar able to generate
terrorist organizations:
Gavrilo Princip, nationalist
serbian terrorist, provokef the WWI
many people say Terrorism come from poverty
many people say terrorists are mad or insane men
BUT
Many terrorist belong to the
middle or even upper class
Many terrorist organization act in a very smart way
to get their aims
Terrorists, soldiers, heroes? there is
ambiguity in some questions
For many right-wingers they are terrorists, but acoording
to many left-wingers they are heroes
Colombian FARCErnesto Guevara
For many Israelis they are
terrorist, but according to
many muslims they are
heroes
PKK Militia
Hamas
For many
Turkish they are
terrorist, but
according to
many Kurdish
they are fighters
for freedom
Terrorism is not a
present
phenomenon. We
can find examples of
terrorism from old
times
Hassan-i Sabbāh (1050-1124), known
as The Old Man of the Mountain. He
used to send his supporters to kill his
political enemies in suicide attacks.
Actually, the word “assassins” come
from these terrorist who were called
hassasin because they consumed
hashish
TERRORISM IN THE 11th CENTURY
The Hassan-i Sabbah´s headquarter: the
Alamut fortress, in Syria
OTHER EXAMPLES OF TERRORISM IN THE 17th CENTURY
In 1610, the ultra-catholic
François Ravaillac,
assassinated Henri IV of France,
King pro-protestant.
Ravaillac was tortured and
dismemberd as punishment
The English Catholic Guy Fawkes and
his partners tried to blow up the
English Parliament in 1610 when the
king
Jacob I and the Lords were met. He
was discovered before doing the attack
and executed
The most active terrorists
between the end of the 19th
century and the beginning
of the 20th century were
anarchists
People killed by anarchist
Tsar Alexander II. 1881
Sadi Carnot, president
of the French Republic.
1894
Cánovas del Castillo,
Spanish Prime Minister.
1897
Austrian Empress
Elizabeth, best known as
Sissi. 1898
The Italian king Humberto I.
1900
William McKInley,
president of the
United States. 1901
Carlos I of Portugal and his
son and heir Luis Felipe de
Braganza. 1908
José Canalejas,
Spanish prime minister.
1912
Anarchist attack against Wall Street.
38 died people and 400 injured people. 1920
and etc. etc. etc.
An example of nationalist terrorism:
The assassination of the archduke Francis Ferdinand
of Austria and his wife in 1914 in the city of
Sarajevo.
The terrorists were three young serbian men
belonging to the terrorist group “Unification or
Death”. This terrorist group was sponsored by the
serbian government.
After this attach the First World War broke out
Some European nationalist terrorist groups
ETA, Spanish-Basque terrorist
organization
FLNC. A Corsican (France) terrorist group
PKK. Turkish-Kurdistan terrorist organization
Communist terrorism.
The first mass terrorist attack in Europe was made by the Bulgarian communists in the
Sveta-Nedelya Cathedral in Sophia, Bulgaria in 1925.
150 people, mainly from the country's political and military elite, were killed in the attack
and around 500 were injured
Some European communist terrorist groups in the 60´-70´-80´-90´
Spain The Red Army Faction
AKA Baader Meinhof Gang
Germany
The Red Brigade. Italy
1978
Extreme right-wing terrorism. Some examples
The slaughter of five communist lawyers specialized in worker´s rights in their Madrid
office in 1977
The slaughter of Bolonia (in Italian strage di Bolonia) in 1980: 85 died people an
200 injured
This attack was made by fascist terrorist and
by the
secret organization called “Gladio”
2011 Norway attacks
Anders Breivik, an ultra-right-
wing terrorist
He killed 77 people, many of them
young socialist who were celebrating a
meeting in the island of Utoya near Oslo
Jihadist terrorism: some considerations.
.-The most of victims of the jihadist terrorism are muslims
because usually there is a great division and hate
between Sunnis (majority) and Shiites (minority)
.- So, the Sunni jihadism use to attack the Shiites and vice
versa
.- In Europe and in the West in general have more impact
the jihadist terrorist attacks against western countries or
citizens
Main jihadist terrorist groups:
ISIS or DAESH (Syria-Irak)
Al Qaeda
Hamas (Gaza) (Under discussion)
Hezbollah (Lebanon)
Salafist Group for Call and Combat / al-Qaeda in the
Islamic Maghreb
Boko Haram (Nigeria)
Al Shabaab (Somalia)
etc. etc.
The most famous
jihadist attacks against
western interest and
citizens in these last
years have been:
The september 11th 2001
Attacks against USA
2997 dead people
More than 6000 injured people
Lugar del impacto del vuelo 93 de la United Airlines
Jihadist terrorist
attack against Bali
-Indonesia-
October 12th 2002
202 dead people
209 injured people
Assault with 850 hostages in the Dubrovka Teather in
Moscow. October, 23th, 2002.
129 dead people
Terrorist attack
in Madrid. March
11th 2004
193 dead people
1900 injured
people
Jihadist terrorist
attack in London
July 7th 2005
56 dead people
700 injured
people
Jihadist terrorist attack against Ankara.
October 10th 2015
128 dead people
246 injured people
Jihadist terrorist attacks against Paris
November 2015
130 dead people
More than 350 injured people
As you can see, many
Western countries have
suffered jihadist attacks in
these last 15 years
And remember: we have explained only the
attacks against western interest and citizens,
but these jihadist attacks take place more
abundantly in the Near East (Syria, Israel,
Lebanon…) Middle East (Irak, Afghanistan,
Iran..) and in the islamic African countries such
as Nigeria, Niger, Somalia..
Even in China, India, Philippines these terrorist
attacks happen now and then.
As an example we will
explain through some
pictures a bit about
the most lethal jihadist
group nowadays:
ISIS or Daesh
And now, let to me to
say you something, It is
a personal opinion, so,
you can agree or not
1º.- We, the honest people, are more numerous
than the terrorist
2º.- They can kill us, indeed, but, we can kill them
too. They are not indestructible.
3º.- Don´t be afraid, enjoy life. If you don´t do that,
the terrorist will have won, and this cannot happen
ever. This will not happen ever
