We use Apache Cassandra at BlackRock to help power our Aladdin investment management platform. Like most users, we love Cassandra’s scalability and fault tolerance. One challenge we’ve faced is keeping data consistent between data centers. Cassandra is great at replicating data to multiple data centers, and many users take advantage of this feature to achieve eventual consistency in multi-region clusters. At BlackRock, we have several use cases where eventual consistency is not good enough; sometimes we need to guarantee that the most recent data is available from all locations. Cassandra’s tunable consistency makes it possible to achieve this extreme level of resiliency. In this talk we’ll discuss our experience from the past several years using Cassandra for cross-WAN consistency, some of the novel ways we’ve dealt with the performance implications, and our ideas for improving support for this usage model in future versions of Cassandra.

ScyllaDB: NoSQL at Ludicrous Speed
ScyllaDB is a NoSQL database compatible with Apache Cassandra, distinguishing itself by supporting millions of operations per second, per node, with predictably low latency, on similar hardware.
Achieving such speed requires a great deal of diligent, deliberate mechanical sympathy: ScyllaDB employs a totally asynchronous, share-nothing programming model, relies on its own memory allocators, and meticulously schedules all its IO requests.
In this talk we will go over the low-level details of all the techniques involved - from a log-structured memory allocator to an advanced cache design -, covering how they are implemented and how they fully utilize the hardware resources they target.
Kafka Summit SF 2017 - Infrastructure for Streaming Applications
Criteo uses Kafka for streaming applications including RTB logs, user activity tracking, and analytics. They developed tools for Kafka including a C# driver, watermark injection for determining data completeness, replication between clusters, and monitoring of brokers, consumers and Zookeeper. Criteo's Kafka deployment includes multiple data centers with two clusters each handling different workloads, and is able to process millions of messages per second with low latency.

MagnetoDB aims to allow applications using DynamoDB to run on OpenStack.

ScyllaDB: NoSQL at Ludicrous Speed
ScyllaDB is a NoSQL database compatible with Apache Cassandra, distinguishing itself by supporting millions of operations per second, per node, with predictably low latency, on similar hardware.
Achieving such speed requires a great deal of diligent, deliberate mechanical sympathy: ScyllaDB employs a totally asynchronous, share-nothing programming model, relies on its own memory allocators, and meticulously schedules all its IO requests.
In this talk we will go over the low-level details of all the techniques involved - from a log-structured memory allocator to an advanced cache design -, covering how they are implemented and how they fully utilize the hardware resources they target.
Kafka Summit SF 2017 - Infrastructure for Streaming Applications
Criteo uses Kafka for streaming applications including RTB logs, user activity tracking, and analytics. They developed tools for Kafka including a C# driver, watermark injection for determining data completeness, replication between clusters, and monitoring of brokers, consumers and Zookeeper. Criteo's Kafka deployment includes multiple data centers with two clusters each handling different workloads, and is able to process millions of messages per second with low latency.

In the software industry we’re fond of terms that define major trends, like “cloud native”, “Kubernetes native” and “serverless”. As more and more organizations move stateful workloads to Kubernetes, we’ve started to see these terms applied to data infrastructure, where they can get overtaken by marketing hype unless we work to define them.
In this talk, we’ll examine two different databases, TiDB and Apache Cassandra, in order to identify what it means for a database to be Kubernetes native and why it matters. We’ll look at points including:

Following on from the Cassandra on SSD on AWS benchmark that was run live during the 2012 Summit, we've been benchmarking a large write intensive multi-region cluster to see how far we can push it. LinkedIn leverages the Apache Hadoop ecosystem for its big data analytics. Steady growth of the member base at LinkedIn along with their social activities results in exponential growth of the analytics infrastructure. Innovations in analytics tooling lead to heavier workloads on the clusters, which generate more data, which in turn encourage innovations in tooling and more workloads. Thus, the infrastructure remains under constant growth pressure. Heterogeneous environments embodied via a variety of hardware and diverse workloads make the task even more challenging.
This talk will tell the story of how we doubled our Hadoop infrastructure twice in the past two years.
• We will outline our main use cases and historical rates of cluster growth in multiple dimensions.
• We will focus on optimizations, configuration improvements, performance monitoring and architectural decisions we undertook to allow the infrastructure to keep pace with business needs.
• The topics include improvements in HDFS NameNode performance, and fine tuning of block report processing, the block balancer, and the namespace checkpointer.

Folding is a recent technique for building efficient recursive SNARKs. Several elegant folding protocols have been proposed, such as Nova, Supernova, Hypernova, Protostar, and others. However, all of them rely on an additively homomorphic commitment scheme based on discrete log, and are therefore not post-quantum secure. In this work we present LatticeFold, the first lattice-based folding protocol based on the Module SIS problem. This folding protocol naturally leads to an efficient recursive lattice-based SNARK and an efficient PCD scheme. LatticeFold supports folding low-degree relations, such as R1CS, as well as high-degree relations, such as CCS. The key challenge is to construct a secure folding protocol that works with the Ajtai commitment scheme. The difficulty, is ensuring that extracted witnesses are low norm through many rounds of folding. We present a novel technique using the sumcheck protocol to ensure that extracted witnesses are always low norm no matter how many rounds of folding are used. Our evaluation of the final proof system suggests that it is as performant as Hypernova, while providing post-quantum security.

This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
