Talk at the Kinnelon Library Mar 15 2012 on how to buy a computer using unadvertised discount codes on major brand systems, and what systems are worth buying, along with a discussion of CPU types and how to buy a machine that lasts a long time.
Things To Consider When Buying A ComputerAshitta Ann
These days, it's not unusual for individuals or families to have more than one type of computer. If you’re looking to carry your computer to work or on vacation, you obviously need a laptop. And some have slimmed down to weigh as little as a couple of pounds.
If mobility isn't a concern get a desktop, because it's very likely that you'll get more performance for the same money—plus more flexibility in customizing the machine once you buy it.
The document provides step-by-step instructions for building your own computer. It discusses selecting components such as cases, motherboards, and processors. It recommends buying quality parts that will allow for future upgrades. The document contains 27 parts that outline the entire process of building a computer from start to finish, including installing components, setting up the operating system, and tweaking the finished creation.
This document provides 28 tips and tricks for saving money using computers. Some key tips include reviving old PCs for specific uses instead of buying new devices, buying items online to avoid sales tax and get lower prices, using free or low-cost software instead of expensive commercial versions, cutting cable and phone costs by using internet-based services, and printing documents more efficiently. Overall the tips aim to lower technology-related expenses through frugal computer use and choosing lower-cost online alternatives.

Maximize your chances of a successful refurbished laptop purchase. Our 10-point checklist covers everything from performance to warranty—read before you buy!
1) A megabyte is not exactly 1 million bytes but rather 1,048,576 bits.
2) When upgrading a processor, the new processor must be compatible with the motherboard's socket type and electrical requirements, and RAM must also be compatible with the new CPU.
3) There is no simple answer to whether it is cheaper to upgrade components or buy a new system - one must calculate costs and plan for upgrades taking longer than expected.
This document discusses the impact of automation and computers on manufacturing and jobs. It describes how industrial automation through CAD/CAM has reduced the need for human workers in factories while creating new technology jobs such as software programmers, network administrators, and call center professionals. While automation has eliminated many assembly line jobs, retraining displaced workers for skilled technology careers can help address unemployment issues. Overall, the text examines how the integration of information technology has transformed modern manufacturing.
Couple of weeks ago I got a call from Dell for an opening for Product Manager, and one of the responsibilities mentioned was to drive Shop-to-Cart conversion and average order value. - What latencies and throughputs you should expect from Kafka
- How to select hardware and size components
- What you should be monitoring
- Design patterns and antipatterns for client applications
- How to go about diagnosing performance bottlenecks
- Which configurations to examine and which ones to avoid

Lotte Randall wants to start a full-time computer building business. However, she needs to earn at least £1,000 per month to cover living expenses. Her business plan estimates expenses of building PCs and calculates that selling 5 PCs per month at £1,000 each would allow her to earn a profit. She will purchase parts in bulk from suppliers and produce computers either in batches or one at a time. Lotte decides to seek venture capital financing to fund startup costs without taking on debt or interest payments.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Options on the Machines You are Comparing
• Do Not Worry if the Computer You are Interested In
Disappears for a Week or So – Either It or Another
Similar Will Reappear after that Time
• Remember To Compare Included or Optional Warranties
11. A Little About Modern Computers
• Computers these days have multi-core CPUs,
that is 2 or more, up to 8 in Desktop Systems
now, in one CPU package. They are much more
powerful than their older single core
predecessors.
• While Dual Core Systems are popular they are
not likely to last well, or as long as Quad Core
and higher Computers. Try to buy an Intel brand
Quad Core, Core i5 or Core i7 machine.
12. What Computer Should I Choose?
• The most important thing to remember, after how much money you think
you can afford to spend, is that, now, more than ever:
• Power = Longevity
• That Means that the ever increasing Load Placed on a Computer by the
Internet, Programs, and Support Software, is increasing at a faster and
faster pace over time.
• You could buy a mid-range computer 5 or 6 years ago and expect it to last
for 5 or six years. That is no longer true.
• The Average Computer being sold today has a dual core CPU, 4 to 6 GB of
memory and is expected to last (not wear out) in terms of viable use, no
more than 3 years, 4 at the outside. It won’t be dead, just useless.
• Anyone expecting to have a computer last 5 years or more needs a Quad
Core 8 GB, or more, machine.
• That means at least an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU, and, sadly, AMD CPUs
simply do not compare well in power or bang-for-the-buck at the moment.
Next – My Very Favorite Laptop:
17. What Other Equipment Do I Need?
• A Monitor – Where should I buy one?
• You can buy one of the monitors offered
with the computer you buy and you will
pay more than you need to but get a good
monitor, or …
• You can buy one through the same
discount sites, e.g. …
19. How Do I Know If I Need an Extended Warranty?
• Can You Do Without Your Computer?
Whose Extended Warranty Should I Get?
• The Manufacturer’s. Always. 3rd Party
Warranties Can Take more Than 3 Weeks to
Resolve
•3rd Party Warranties are almost all Profit for the
Store, and nearly Useless, so it is just like Paying
A Higher Price for the Item
20. What If My Computer Dies?
• A 3rd Party Warranty Often Does Not Actually
Guarantee That Your Computer Will Be Fixed!!! Or
When …
• If it is Old, the Warrantor may elect to pay you a “Fair
Market Value” buyout for the computer.
• Guess Who Decides How Much That Is???
• The Manufacturer Will Fix Your Machine, Within the
Agreed Timeframe
• Manufacturers Offer Next Day Repair in Home,
Depending on the Day of the Week
• If Your Hard Drive Dies, Too – I Hope You Have A
Backup
21. You Can Extend the Manufacturer’s
Warranty for Computers Bought
Elsewhere!!!
• Just Call HP, or Dell, or Whomever, and
Tell Them You want To Extend Your New
Computer’s Warranty.
• The Will Be Happy to Do It!
• For a Pretty Fair Price.
• You Usually Have to Extend the Warranty
Within the First 30 Days of Ownership
22. What About BJ’s?
BJ’s has good choices at competitive prices – you have to know
what to look for, and you have to extend the warranty with the maker
yourself.
24. What Should I Be Looking For in a CPU?
• 4 Core if You Can Afford It
• That Means at least a Core i5 24XX CPU for
Desktops
• Or at least Core i7 2XXXQM for Laptops
• There are no Core i5 Quad Core Laptop CPUs
• Remember – a Laptop at the same price level
as a Desktop with a similar CPU number is
ALWAYS lower powered .
• If your use of the computer will allow it, that
means you should buy a Desktop, if you can.
25. What Are My Favorite Computers?
• The HP dv6tqe and dv7tqe Laptops
• The Dell XPS 8300 Desktop
Why Do I Like Them???
• They are all Quad Core Machines Priced
very well and discounted, and I have had
very good experience with them
• They will last a Long Time …
