This document summarizes a presentation given by T. Peters of Deltares on developments in levee safety and the IJkdijk project. The presentation introduced Deltares and discussed flood protection in the Netherlands. It described the smart levee concept which combines sensor technology and levee engineering. The IJkdijk project was highlighted as a field test of new sensor technologies and knowledge of failure mechanisms. DAM software was presented as a tool for automated levee assessment, real-time failure forecasting, and improving levee lifecycle management. In conclusion, sensor technology, data integration, and early warning systems were discussed as keys to addressing new flood protection challenges from climate change.
Underground Water Management for Utility Vaults and ManholesC.I.Agent Solutions
Underground water management in electric utility vaults, manholes and containment spaces isn’t always an easy task. In fact, keeping up with regular O&M results in a number of challenges that force utilities to get creative in order to effectively tackle these problems. However, during a presentation to the MD-DC Utilities Association 2016 Environmental Conference on Oct. 13, 2016, Dan Parker, CEO of C.I.Agent Solutions, revealed some innovative solutions to mitigate risks and tradeoffs in management of underground infrastructure problems.

Birds, Bats and Beyond – What’s that got to do with Water?
Nick Elderfield (DHI),
Tuesday 21 April 2015 at 12:40 - 13:00
Innovation in modelling water environments is what DHI has been about for over 50 years. A detailed understanding of the controlling physical conditions, coupled with a behavioural knowledge of critical species dependant on the water environment, provides a scientifically robust approach to assessing historic and future change spatially and temporally. Our habitat modelling approach has been successfully applied on a number of projects in the UK and the wider North Sea region, combining expertise in water environments with the critical issues for today’s projects. Models always rely on data and, to this end, DHI have developed sensing technologies from low cost, web-ready devices to integrated observation systems for birds and mammals.
INDYMO is a recently created start-up that works in the field of the management of water resources and water quality. Our focus is on innovative ways of monitoring water quality and ecology using underwater drones (dynamic). Until now we have been working with an underwater drone equipped with water quality sensors and a video camera. A new drone is currently in the development stage, and our goal is to make it an efficient and powerful tool, suitable for various uses and applications in the field of water.

Review of urban flood risk mapping methods to guide risk reduction strategies. Tiered vulnerability assessment for urban storm (overland pluvial and sewer), sanitary / wastewater and riverine systems is illustrated from "Flood Plain to Floor Drain", consistent with the author's design standards guideline for best practices and projects in existing communities. Example risk mapping / tiered vulnerability evaluations in Markham, Ontario and Stratford, Ontario are shown emphasizing where simple and intermediate risk assessment can guide no-regret, practically deployed policies and programs to reduce urban flood risk, and there advanced risk assessment can guide minor and major capital projects as part of more comprehensive studies in high risk areas that warrant infrastructure investments to lower flood damages in specific local systems. Presentation was made as part of the Ontario Urban Flooding Collaborative organized by Green Communities Canada.

28. Conclusion
• Climate change the Netherlands are facing major new
challenges on flood protection
• First key: New measurement technology in the dike (fibre optics,
micronano sensors) and remote sensing (LIDAR, SAR, ….)
providing real-time observations.
• Second key: data-model integration. DAM already improves the
cost effectiveness of the levee life cycle management for:
• Maintenance and planning
• Assessment (5-yearly checkup)
• Reinforcement and design
• Third key: DAM connected to Flood Early Warning Systems
(FEWS) provides real-time prediction of failure as a decision
support tool for floodrisk management.
29. And will this be the future of flood protection?
