Recycling or Strengthening In-PlaceMaterials
Project ConditionsThatAre SuitableFor In-PlaceRecycling
1. Cold In-PlaceRecycling (CIR) Recycling “Train”))
 Arterial streets, Collector streets, Highways, and Runways that total
180,000 SF or biggerin size.
 Asphaltsection only is deteriorating and needs to be partiallyor fully
replaced.
 Base or subgradeis in good stablecondition (isolated areas of dig-outs
are okay as long as they are a small proportion of total project/>25%)
 TypicallyCIR willsavea minimum of 30% and providea longerlife
cycle when compared to a grind and overlay(millandfill)type of
remove and replaceconstruction method.
 Instead of paying a contractor to remove and haul awayyour old
asphaltasset that is worth $25 to $45/ton, CIR willturn the old asphalt
asset that has alreadybeen paid for, into a new base course asphalt
section. This recycled base course section willsubsequentlybecapped
by a thinner virgin hot mix or rubberized hot mix asphaltsection.
 Typical cost to recycle old asphaltin to a new base course asphaltwith
(CIR) is $37/ton.
2. Cold Central PlantRecycling (CCPR)
 ParkingLots and Residential Streets that are inaccessibleto the (CIR)
“Train”that total 180,000SF or biggerin size.
 Asphaltsection only, or both asphaltsection and base/subgradesection
need to be reconstructed.
 If asphaltsection only need to be replaced, (CCPR)willsavea
minimum of 30% when comparedto a grind and overlaytype of remove
and replaceconstruction method.
 If there are subgradeor base failuresattributableto the pavement
failure, or the pavementsection needs to be increased because of
increased traffic loading-cementor limestabilization of the base
and/or subgradesection combined with(CCPR)to produce a new base
course asphaltsection willprovidecost savingsof 45% to 50% or more.
 Typical cost to recycle old asphaltintoa new base course asphalt
section with(CCPR)is $41-$45/ton.
3. Full Depth Reclamation (FDR)
 Parkinglots or streets of 20,000SF or biggerin size that need to be
fullyreconstructed (entire pavementsection inclusiveof asphalt, base
and/or subgradesection needs to be replaced).
 Instead of doing deep excavationsand removingthe entire existing
pavementsection, doing subgradepreparation, importingnew
aggregatebase, and paving a new asphaltsection- Removeonlywhatis
needed to makeroom for a new asphaltsection, then stabilizethe
remainingmaterialsin-placechemically(cementor lime), or
bituminously(asphaltemulsion, foamedasphalt)to providea stabilized
base section that has superior structural valuesto a ClassII aggregate
base.
 The stabilized layerwillbridgepotentiallyyieldingsubgradeconditions
that exist below and thatwould causeunforeseen costs/change orders
to remedy in a remove and replaceconstruction method.
 FDR willtakeup to half the timeto completecompared to a remove
and replaceconstruction method.
 FDR willminimizeimpacton utilitieswithminimizedexcavation
depths.
 FDR willsavea minimum of 30% or higher on the total project cost
compared to a removeand replace construction method.
