synopsis
Lhundrup Dhechen (Great Blessing)
By Elisabetta Errani Emaldi
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF STORY
The story begins when the writer and poet Elisabetta (woman of forty-nine years), is urged to
leave for Nepal by Dr. Serena and her husband (former retired judge) Francesco. Interested,
she accepts the invitation with enthusiasm.
After registration in the meditation course at the Kopan Monastery, she decides to become a
vegetarian. A few months before leaving for Kathmandu, Christ, the Virgin Mary, Padre Pio
and the Buddhist monks send her messages through dreams and images that make her
understand that they are preparing her for an amazing experience, reinforcing also her
conviction that when all religions teach love and brotherhood they lead to the same source.
In Katmandu, at the Manaslu Hotel, Serena and Francesco introduce Elisabetta to Gopal,
their Nepalese lawyer friend who fights for the rights of his people, risking his life. Gopal is
also concerned about the Maoist guerrillas that distance peace. At the end of the month Gopal
will release his book on human rights against the will of the Nepalese authorities.
During the nights at the Manaslu Hotel Elisabetta continues to have the same visions of
monks flying away from her smiling. On the last night in Katmandu Elisabetta wakes up with
the image of a group of people who smile, among these she notices above all two young men in
their thirties, a Buddhist monk and a tall young man with long black hair.
On November 4, 2001, they reach the Kopan Monastery. In the room that is assigned to
Elisabetta and Serena meet Jolanda, a Spanish girl with whom they will share the bedroom.
The two friends realize that the woman has just stopped crying. Jolanda then will tell them
that a few months before she lost her sixteen-years-old son in a car accident and that in the
impact his knee pierced his heart.
On November 5, when the three friends reach the gompa for the first meeting with the Master
Venerable Neil, Elisabetta recognizes the group of French people, made up of six women and
five men, including the Buddhist Monk Jean François and Willy with his long black hair.
Since the three characters speak French, a few days later in accordance with Karen (the nun
in charge of the meditations session), the three friends will be welcomed in the group of
François they will discuss the teacher's lectures together, every afternoon at 14.00.

In the monastery, besides the three friends there are 176 guests, from all over the world.
Karen invites everyone to take part in Karma Yoga: each of them has to offer themselves as a
volunteer, and work together for the good of all. Serena offers herself as a doctor for the
monks and any patients, Elisabetta with the consent of Serena, decides to be her assistant. So
getting up every morning at 5.00 am, to the recitations of mantras and monks’ prayers, the
sound of cymbals, horns, songs, all are included in the monastic life.
During meditations and lectures, the position of the lotus flower, give many people knee
problems; between the practice of silence, fasting, the curing of the sick, life gets complicated
In the monastery, Elisabetta deepens the relationship with the extraordinary and mysterious
world of the paranormal, for her own personal experiences and for the incredible testimonies
of the stories of Lama Yeshe, reincarnation of the young Lama Tenzin Osel Rinpoche of
Spanish origin, Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Geshe Lama Konchok who at the cremation of his
body rainbows appeared in the sky, in the ashes they found a piece of tongue, with the
imprinted image of Tara, pearls etc. Lama Charo (the monk-child is able to remember his
previous life and has found his previous family) and by Zina Rachevsky (daughter of the
Prince Romanov who ran away from Russia during the Revolution. Her mother was a rich
American heiress and Zina grew up in Hollywood; she became a famous actress and when she
decided to become Buddhist she gave Lama Yeshe Kopan a hill (the place where the monks
built the monastery) as a present.
During the guided meditations by Karen, amazing images appear in Elisabetta’s mind: the
Dalai Lama, who approached her and hugs her. She sees the ethereal face of Vajrasattva
dancing on all the books of the prayer of those present. Christ who sends her a thread of white
energy that goes down and spirals up around her body and with a light pressure hits the third
eye in the middle of her forehead. Buddha asks her to strive to become a Buddha herself, and
when Elisabetta says she does not know if she will ever become one a tear falls from the face
of the Buddha; then moved, she promises him that she will try to do her best, to become like
him and help humanity to go out from samsara.
Healings that occur during meditation to bring beautiful teachings, a cat which roams around
becomes a legend because he cries and wants to enter the gompa to study the Dharma, for this
reason it is rumored that he is the soul of a disobedient monk that for punishment was
condemned to wander around the monastery with a body of cat. Serena also tells her only
experience that refers to reincarnation; Tara talks to Francesco in a Tibetan monastery.
During an initiation, Lama Lhundrup Rigsel gave Elisabetta the name in Tibetan" Lhundrup
Dhechen" (Dhechen: Great Blessing).
Unfortunately, the peace of the monastery is upset by the Maoist war that starts again after a
truce. Being worried the monks cancel some meditation classes. Meanwhile the Maoists get
closer and closer to the monastery, in fact, during the day and night you can hear the firing of
machine guns resound in the valley. The permanence of the three friends in the monastery
ends with various initiations and rituals performed by the monks in their colorful Tibetan
religious costumes, among litany the sounds of horns and cymbals and so on. Their stay in
Katmandu, continue between general strikes and the Nepalese Maoist guerrillas.
