Complete the Student Information sheet. Why do I ask for your cell phone number? I believe you are old enough and responsible enough that I do not always need to contact your parents. If there is an issue that I think can be resolved without parent involvement, I will try to reach you before contacting your parents.
Class Syllabus Please take this syllabus home and have it signed by your parents. This is your first homework assignment, due Friday. Also due Friday: You must bring in a Leisure reading book to be approved.
My Information A little about me. Phone Number – I try to return all calls within 24 hours. TeacherWeb – Your class website where you can find pretty much anything. www.teacherweb.com/ca/centennialhighschool/finger
Books and Videos We will not read or view all of these, but we will get to a few of them within the year Because this syllabus also functions as a video permission slip form, you must return the signed portion in order to watch movies.
Materials The most important of these are the composition notebook and the Leisure Reading book. You need to have your materials with you by Friday. You also need to bring your text book to class!
Assignments “ If you don’t have time to do it right, you must have time to do it over.” I am available most days at lunch and after school. If you find any assignment difficult, I will help you. Therefore, there is no excuse for cheap work. Late work: I’ll take it, but you will lose credit.
Zero Tolerance for Zeros There are zero reasons to get a zero. “ I don’t get it.”  I will help you. “ I don’t have time.”  Most work is done in class. I always try to provide adequate time for class work. I design homework assignments to take between 10 and 20 minutes. This is less time than 1 sitcom. A zero will become a detention in which you will sit with me and make up the missing assignment.
Homework Homework for the week will be on the board. I try to give you two days a week to knock out some Leisure Reading pages Friday homework is optional. It doesn’t affect your grade; it builds character. Take a moment to write down this weeks homework on the back of your syllabus.
Rules The rules for this class are few and simple: R espect: Treat everyone with respect (whether or not they deserve it). R esponsibility: Be in your seat at the tardy bell, give your best effort, and show integrity. R eaction: React maturely when you disagree with the teacher or other students.
Respect Just be kind to people. I will always strive to respect you! I will never purposely embarrass you If I am ever unkind and I realize it, I will apologize. If I am unkind and don’t realize it, tell me (kindly) and you can bet I will be sorry. Strive to do the same for me and for others.
Responsibility Integrity: Be the kind of man or woman people can always trust. Be a person you can respect. Give your best effort Be honest, even when it’s scary. Don’t justify what is wrong, but seek out how you can do it better next time.
Reaction Here is a surprise: You are not always going to agree with me. Even so, don’t lose your cool. If you disagree with my actions or decisions, I will always hear you out, but only after class. If you argue in class, you have lost all grounds for reconsideration. Hand over your cell phones and such if I ask. Step outside if I ask you to.
Consequences Being awesome Positive contact with parents All kinds of privileges because I trust you! Making unwise choices My detention School detention Parent contact Referral to your Assistant Principal
Grading Note that reading is 10% of your grade. This means that 100% in your reading grade will take you up one letter grade! But a zero will take you down one letter grade. Normal grading scale If you get a low score, you may see me about doing the assignment over. You may also do…
Extra Credit!! Yes! I give many opportunities for extra credit! However, I will only accept extra credit if you have no zeros in the grade book. You may attend school events and write an objective news article on the event. 5pts You may do up to 5 each quarter. Only 2 may be a repeat event. (i.e. Two football games) 1 event may be your own game, performance, etc.
Your Task Take a moment to review this syllabus and sign the bottom portion. Remember, you need to get your parents to sign so that you can return this to me on Friday. I only want the bottom portion back. Keep the rest in your binder.
