Theoretical and applied implications of principal findings in learning, memory, and cognition.
This course helps students gain an understanding of how learning occur in individual organisms, through mainly classical
conditioning, operant conditioning, and observational learning. This course emphasize basic terminlogies and application of
those terminologies in our daily life.
Student Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will:
1. be able to name the key concepts and principles in the scientific study of learning
2. be able to analyze real-life scenario using the terminologies and principles in learning

Exams and Assignments
Lecture assignments There are 23 Lecture Assignments throughout the semester. You will Submit each assignment through
“assignment” on BlackBoard. You can drop 3 out of the 23 assignments for final grading. Submission portal for each Lecture
Assignment will be open under the "Lecture Assignments" folder 48 hours ahead of the due time. Grades for the Lecture
Assignments should be visible on BlackBoard within 1 week from the due date.
Video recording You will upload through Piazza.com a total of 12 video recordings throughout the semester. You get full
points as long as your video is longer than 1 minute and it features you learning or practicing juggling balls (or other objects
that are safe to juggle). Try to gather all your video postings in one post thread.
Chapter quizzes There are 5 chapter quizzes. All quizzes are open-book and you can work with your classmates on the
quizzes. Submission portal of the quizzes will be open on BlackBoard 24 hours ahead of the due time.
Application papers You will write 2 application papers to apply what you have learned in this course to a real-life scenario:
you will view 3-5 video recordings from 1 of your classmates and you will write a paper to coach that classmate on juggling.
That is, you will use the psychological concepts/principles to give your classmates suggestions on how to learn to juggle.
Submission portal for the application papers will be open 1 week before the due date.
Final exam You will come to GP208 on Dec.5 to take the comprehensive final exam during 8:00 – 10:30 am. You cannot re-
schedule or make-up the final exam. This is an open-book exam but you cannot bring any electronic devices. There are 100
multiple choice questions in this exam.
Extra credit opportunities You are encouraged to take part in the following activities: take the SOI survey towards the end of
the semester and take a screenshot that shows you have completed the survey. Email me that screenshot and you will earn 1
extra credit. You can also earn up to 4 points' extra credit by participating in the following learning-related activities: 1) go to
the writing center to edit any of your paper assignments. Ask the writing center to send me an email a er the appointment
and you can earn 0.5 point for each visit. 2) help another PY361 student with short-answer or short-essay questions throughout
the semester and ask that student to write me an email describing how you have helped him or her. You can earn 0.5 point for
helping a classmate. 3) You do not need to actually acquire the skill of juggling. But if you can earn another 0.5 point by
demonstrating a mastery of juggling.
Other Course Materials
Juggling Balls You will teach yourself how to juggle as part of the course requirement. Each Friday, you will upload a short
video recording show yourself try to juggle. You don't necessarily have to master the skill of juggling by the end of the
semester. The purpose of this activity is for everybody to have a shared experience of learning a skill that's readily observable.
To facilitate this activity, you need to buy at least three juggling balls. There are a variety of options online as well as in-store.

7. Computer Resources: Desktop computers are available in all libraries on campus. There is actually a computer lab on the
first floor of Gordon Palmer Hall. We will use Microso Word to edit all assignments, Quizzes, and papers. The following two
websites show you which computer is available in which library and what so ware is installed in which computer.

Grading Policy
Your grade for this course is the higher one of these two grading methods:
Grading method 1:
20 lecture assignments: 200 points
12 video recordings: 60 points
5 chapter quizzes: 150 points
2 application papers: 50 points
Final exam: 100 points
Total: 560 points
Grading method 2:
20 lecture assignments: 100 points
12 video recordings: 6 points
5 chapter quizzes: 40 points
2 application papers: 14 points
Final exam: 400 points
Total: 560 points
Policy on Missed Exams & Coursework
Each late hour would result in 1% deduction in the grade of that assignment.
8. Attendance Policy
Attendance of all class meetings are expected. Students are responsible for missing any information due to absence in class
meetings.

Severe Weather Guidelines
The guiding principle at The University of Alabama is to promote the personal safety of our students, faculty and sta during
severe weather events. It is impossible to develop policies which anticipate every weather-related emergency. These guidelines
are intended to provide additional assistance for responding to severe weather on campus.
UA is a residential campus with many students living on or near campus. In general classes will remain in session until the
National Weather Service issues safety warnings for the city of Tuscaloosa. Clearly, some students and faculty commute from
adjacent counties. These counties may experience weather related problems not encountered in Tuscaloosa. Individuals should
follow the advice of the National Weather Service for that area taking the necessary precautions to ensure personal safety.
Whenever the National Weather Service and the Emergency Management Agency issue a warning, people in the path of the
storm (tornado or severe thunderstorm) should take immediate life saving actions.
When West Alabama is under a severe weather advisory, conditions can change rapidly. It is imperative to get to where you
can receive information from the National Weather Service and to follow the instructions provided. Personal safety should
dictate the actions that faculty, sta and students take.
The O ice of University Relations will disseminate the latest information regarding conditions on campus in the
following ways:
Weather advisory posted on the UA homepage
Weather advisory sent out through UA Alerts to faculty, sta and students
Weather advisory broadcast over WVUA at 90.7 FM
Weather advisory broadcast over Alabama Public Radio (WUAL) at 91.5 FM
Weather advisory broadcast over WVUA-TV/WUOA-TV, and on the website at http://wvua23.com/weather.
In the case of a tornado warning (tornado has been sighted or detected by radar; sirens activated), all university activities are
automatically suspended, including all classes and laboratories. If you are in a building, please move immediately to the lowest
level and toward the center of the building away from windows (interior classrooms, o ices, or corridors) and remain there
until the tornado warning has expired. Classes in session when the tornado warning is issued can resume immediately a er the
warning has expired at the discretion of the instructor. Classes that have not yet begun will resume 30 minutes a er the
tornado warning has expired provided at least half of the class period remains.
Policy on Academic Misconduct
All students in attendance at The University of Alabama are expected to be honorable and to observe standards of conduct
appropriate to a community of scholars. The University of Alabama expects from its students a higher standard of conduct
than the minimum required to avoid discipline. At the beginning of each semester and on examinations and projects, the
professor, department, or division may require that each student sign the following Academic Honor Pledge: “I promise or
a irm that I will not at any time be involved with cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, or misrepresentation while enrolled as a
student at The University of Alabama. I have read the Academic Honor Code, which explains disciplinary procedure resulting
from the aforementioned. I understand that violation of this code will result in penalties as severe as indefinite suspension from
