The author was grateful to Facebook for helping her reconnect with long-lost friends and bringing back fond memories from her youth.

Inexpensive, commonly used NaI:TI scintillators have 50% of the market share, but due to mediocre light output of 44,000 photons/MeV and 6.5% energy resolution (at 662 keV) their application is limited. Proposed technology promises to improve NaI:TI-based scintillators' properties by providing unparalleled output while maintaining low costs. To do so a combinatorial approach was used for the discovery of scintillation materials yielding the highest luminescence and lowest energy resolution. In testing, the engineered crystals of NaI:Tl attained a light output of 52,000 photons/MeV and energy resolution of 4.9% (at 662 keV). Crossing below the 5.0% energy resolution mark provides a specific direction for the development of even better future samples.

The word culture can mean different things to different people: Perhaps it conjures up images of fine art, museums, and orchestras. Or perhaps it is the word you use to
describe the shared patterns, behaviors, and artifacts of a country, region, or society. In
fact, culture does have different “layers” that interact. For example, macrocultures include
national, religious, ethnic, and occupational cultures that exist globally; organizational
cultures exist in private, public, nonprofit, and government arenas; subcultures are found
in occupational groups within organizations; and microcultures exist within occupations
inside and outside organizations (Schein, 2010).
In this chapter, we focus on organizational culture before examining how culture more
generally—in terms of countries, nationalities, ethnicities, and so on—can have broad
implications for leadership efficacy and success. While the first two chapters laid the
foundation for understanding the nature of leadership, these final three chapters show
how leaders influence and shape organizations to achieve goals through communication,
strategy, and teamwork. We begin this discussion with organizational culture because
it shares a mutually dependent relationship with these three dimensions: An organiza-
tion’s culture affects how people communicate, how strategy is developed and imple-
mented, and how people work in teams. Culture can also be defined in terms of these
three dimensions. It is arguably the most important internal organizational dimension.
This chapter will also cover what is perhaps the more common usage of culture—interna-
tional cultures—and how different cultures and globalization present opportunities and
challenges for leadership. Since organizational and national cultures are influenced by
global trends—for example, technology innovations, mergers and acquisitions, influx of
international workers, and a mix of diverse values—leaders and followers must be able to
accommodate such changes in their organizations and teams. Understanding culture has

Have you noticed that it seems that they are the ones who are the most successful? Did you ever wonder why? Read the following material on organizational culture for some insights into what culture is, what it does, how it is formed, and how it is taught to newcomers in the organization. Organizational Structure and Design
The way an organization is designed and structured can have significant effects on its members and its ability to execute its strategy. In this module we will try to understand those effects and analyze the behavioral implications of different organizational designs.
An organizational structure defines how job tasks are formally divided, grouped, and coordinated. According to Robbins and Judge (2014), managers need to address six key elements when they design their organization’s structure:
Work specialization – the extent to which activities are subdivided into separate jobs.
Departmentalization – the basis on which jobs will be grouped together.
Chain of command – the people who individuals and groups report to.
Span of control – the number of individuals that a manager can direct efficiently and effectively.
Centralization and de-centralization – the locus of decision-making authority.
Formalization – the extent to which there will be rules and regulations to direct employees and managers.
One way to gain insight into the complexity of organizations and how organizations are structured or designed is through metaphors. For example, using metaphors, an organization can be talked about as if it were a machine or as if it were an organism. The organization that is like a machine is characterized by extensive departmentalization, high formalization, and limited by low formalization, flat hierarchy and the use of cross-hierarchical and cross-functional teams, free flow of information, and decentralization. Each design has advantages and disadvantages. For example, organizations that are like machines are often good at keeping the costs of standardized products or services down, but could inhibit innovation and creativity. - 1. TITLE: Engagement Toolkit: Using corporate ethnography to break silos in large organizations ABSTRACT: What do silos look like in big fortune 500 companies with multiple divisions, worldwide offices and multiple product lines? What can we do as employees within such organisations to break this mentality that reduces morale, reduces efficiency shared in the overall operation and contributes to the demise of a productive company culture? This presentation brings forth the impact of corporate ethnography on transforming organisational culture when implemented pragmatically in large organisations. It discusses a suite of in-depth activities and hands-on workshop tools that break down existing barriers of inter-department communication and provide a holistic viewpoint of the different teams in an organisation. The talk unfolds to offer a powerful toolbox comprising of empathy workshops, engagement models, engagement canvas deck and engagement ecosystem to create shared understanding required to identify opportunities where teams break through silos and align their efforts. It talks about corporate ethnographers as agents of transformation in the organisation who place ethnography and design in business flows and agendas. It provides a systematic approach to study and document the perspectives and practices of team clusters in an organisational setting, focussing on the qualitative examination of inter department behaviour to create a trusted working relationship. It highlights how such tools build connections by bridging gaps between the different teams and provide a practical framework to support informed, thoughtful engagement between them. It stresses on how ethnography informs functions such as strategy and long-range planning and therefore is central to gaining a full understanding of one’s customers and the business itself.
