Stackato
Presentation of ActiveStates micro-cloud solution Stackato at Open Source Days 2012.
Stackato is a cloud solution from renowned ActiveState. It is based on the Open Source CloudFoundry and offers a serious cloud solution for Perl programmers, but also supports Python, Ruby, Node.js, PHP, Clojure and Java.
Stackato is very strong in the private PaaS area, but do also support as public PaaS and deployment onto Amazon's EC2.
The presentation will cover basic use of Stackato and the reason for using a PaaS, public as private. Stackato can also be used as a micro-cloud for developers supporting vSphere, VMware Fusion, Parallels and VirtualBox.
Stackato is currently in public beta, but it is already quite impressive in both features and tools. Stackato is not Open Source, but CloudFoundry is and Stackato offers a magnificent platform for deployment of Open Source projects, sites and services.
ActiveState has committed to keeping the micro-cloud solution free so it offers an exciting capability and extension to the developers toolbox and toolchain.

Automated OVA deployments using OpenStack infrastructure

Deploying and Managing Hadoop Clusters with AMBARI
Deploying, configuring, and managing large Hadoop and HBase clusters can be quite complex. Just upgrading one Hadoop component on a 2000-node cluster can take a lot of time and expertise, and there have been few tools specialized for Hadoop cluster administrators. AMBARI is an Apache incubator project to deliver Monitoring and Management functionality for Hadoop clusters. This paper presents the AMBARI tools for cluster management, specifically: Cluster pre-configuration and validation; Hadoop software deployment, installation, and smoketest; Hadoop configuration and re-config; and a basic set of management ops including start/stop service, add/remove node, etc. In providing these capabilities, AMBARI seeks to integrate with (rather than replace) existing open-source packaging and deployment technology available in most data centers, such as Puppet and Chef, Yum, Apt, and Zypper.

That is absolutely true! In this session I will share our first implementation experience where we have been using JSS and SXA together.
Tapestry In Action For Real
Ben Gidley presented on how Tapestry was used to build the SeeSaw video on demand website. The initial site was built on Struts but later converted to Tapestry to better support reusable components with state and behavior. A prototype was first built to prove out Tapestry. The team was then trained on Tapestry and the site was gradually converted page by page. Customizations were also made, such as for caching, JavaScript combining, and Flash integration. In the end, Tapestry enabled reusability across the site and good performance under load.

Deploying and Managing Hadoop Clusters with AMBARI
Deploying, configuring, and managing large Hadoop and HBase clusters can be quite complex. Just upgrading one Hadoop component on a 2000-node cluster can take a lot of time and expertise, and there have been few tools specialized for Hadoop cluster administrators. AMBARI is an Apache incubator project to deliver Monitoring and Management functionality for Hadoop clusters. This paper presents the AMBARI tools for cluster management, specifically: Cluster pre-configuration and validation; Hadoop software deployment, installation, and smoketest; Hadoop configuration and re-config; and a basic set of management ops including start/stop service, add/remove node, etc. In providing these capabilities, AMBARI seeks to integrate with (rather than replace) existing open-source packaging and deployment technology available in most data centers, such as Puppet and Chef, Yum, Apt, and Zypper.

That is absolutely true! In this session I will share our first implementation experience where we have been using JSS and SXA together.
Tapestry In Action For Real
Ben Gidley presented on how Tapestry was used to build the SeeSaw video on demand website. The initial site was built on Struts but later converted to Tapestry to better support reusable components with state and behavior. A prototype was first built to prove out Tapestry. The team was then trained on Tapestry and the site was gradually converted page by page. Customizations were also made, such as for caching, JavaScript combining, and Flash integration. In the end, Tapestry enabled reusability across the site and good performance under load.
