When the Community Access Project of Somerville attempted to mitigate the City of Somerville's discriminatory planning for an inaccessible "Art on Emotion"exhibit and affiliated programs, we received a lovely response from the Somerville staffer directing the Suicide Prevention and Youth Program. However, she gave us incorrect information, possibly as a result of the Somerville Museum Director's falsehood. She said that the Museum was "seeking matching funds," as though this was to help with the accessibility barriers.
This letter and responses shows the good faith effort made by CAPS to help the Somerville Health Department's Art on Emotion program become integrated, accessible and equally provided to ALL residents.
Ignoring this good-faith effort, the City of Somerville decided to hold this program in a wholly discriminatory manner, from September 26 through December 17, 2010, at the inaccessible Somerville Museum.

Has your museum ever tried to engage audiences in controversial topics, moderate discussions about social movements, or introduce inclusive practices only to be stymied by your board or director? Does it feel impossible for your museum to be an advocate for social justice issues?

As a film director, I have always been awestruck by the magic of animation. Animation, a medium once considered solely for the amusement of children, has undergone a significant transformation over the years. Its evolution from a rudimentary form of entertainment to a sophisticated form of storytelling has stirred my creativity and expanded my vision, offering limitless possibilities in the realm of cinematic storytelling.
In the vast landscape of cinema, stories have been told, retold, and reimagined in countless ways. At the heart of this narrative evolution lies the concept of a "remake". A successful remake allows us to revisit cherished tales through a fresh lens, often reflecting a different era's perspective or harnessing the power of advanced technology. Yet, the question remains, what makes a remake successful? Today, we will delve deeper into this subject, identifying the key ingredients that contribute to the success of a remake.

“Nothing happens, nothing happens, and then everything happens.”

A lot of life feels like we are traveling on a familiar road. Then, suddenly, by choice or not,
we face a crossroads: a place where multiple, unfamiliar roads converge. We all have
periods in our lives that we can identify in the moment, or in retrospect, as “at the
crossroads.” These times can be painful, exhilarating, or both. No matter what feelings are
stirred up, being at the crossroads is a rich time. A Time of possibility. Of transformation.
In this workshop we will engage with, capture, illuminate, and explore life’s transformations
through writing. We will also probe intersections among poetry, prose, and visual art:
creativity’s crossroads. In this vein, we will additionally intersect with the poetry and
exhibition of quilt art by acclaimed Sunnyvale artist, Joan Schulze--on exhibit as
retrospective in the main gallery of the museum and tellingly entitled, “Poetic License.” The
artist will be on hand to share some insights into how the crossroads of fiber art and poetry
and digital electronics have helped shape her work.

Workshop description:
Music, drama, and other performing arts often transport their audiences. People experience
emotions and dance, laughing and crying in response to seeing dramatic presentations.
However, when we look at visual art our responses are often brief and more rational in
nature. How can we create a deeper and more feeling-ful relationship with visual art?
Artist and educator, Deborah Kennedy leads a workshop focusing on creating just such a
personal relationship with the visual arts. Deborah’s approach emerged from her work
teaching art history classes, where she developed a teaching method encouraging students
to understand art and their relationship to it at a deeper level.
This SWAN Day workshop focuses of the work of women artists. The workshop will begin
with a lecture followed by small group and individual exercises. Slide lectures will trace the
evolution of this teaching method and share the poignant experiences of female students
when using this method. Then Deborah will invite participants to use her method to begin to
develop their own personal relationships with artworks.
Deborah Kennedy bio: Deborah Kennedy has exhibited in California and Germany in
numerous solo and group shows. She was awarded a three-year California Arts Council
grant to work with at-risk youth on graffiti murals, and has completed a public art
commission—Eco-Tech—on the light-rail line in San Jose. In 1997 she received an Artist’s
Fellowship for Installation Arts from the Arts Council of Santa Clara County, San Jose,
California. Two years later she completed a solo exhibition at the de Saisset Museum in
Santa Clara .Recently she presented an installation and performance entitled, Full- Tox
Living at Gallery Route One in Point Reyes, CA. Currently she is teaching
Environmental Art, Theory and Practice at Santa Clara University, and she is working on a
