Learn about best practices for reporting on celebrity boating news with this Case Study from the Nevada Department of Wildlife from 2013 about Erin Brockovich's BUI arrest.
This document summarizes a CNN news segment that covered two topics: 1) The 2015 Iran nuclear deal and recent controversy over it, with Israel providing evidence that Iran lied about suspending its nuclear program. The US must decide by May 12th whether to continue lifting sanctions on Iran. 2) The issue of immigration in the US and a caravan of 100 Central American migrants seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border, which faces opposition from some. The document provides background on both of these complex and long-debated issues.
ETHICS10 - Wikileaks and the Ethics of WhistleblowingMichael Heron
ย
This document discusses Wikileaks and whistleblowing. It provides background on Wikileaks, its founder Julian Assange, and notable whistleblowers. It examines the ethics and legality of whistleblowing, how technology has enabled anonymous leaks, and debates around high-profile leaks like Bradley Manning's. While leaks can expose wrongdoing, they also sometimes disclose private information without consent or endanger lives. There are no simple answers around when and how whistleblowing is justified.

This is the very first issue of the St Andrews student magazine The Foreign Affairs Review, accessible at foreignaffairsreview.co.uk. 1500 copies of this 36-page magazine were distributed to students and advertisers in St Andrews in December 2013.
1. The document argues that the US should declare war on Afghanistan in response to Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda's terrorist activities. It outlines bin Laden and Al Qaeda's attacks on US embassies and naval ships.
2. It states that treating terrorism as a law enforcement issue has been ineffective, as Afghanistan continues to harbor bin Laden without extraditing him.
3. The document concludes that the US should attempt to get UN authorization to use force against Afghanistan first, but should act unilaterally if needed for self-defense against Al Qaeda terrorism emanating from Afghanistan. Declaring war would deter states from supporting terrorism in the future.
CNN's crisis reporting is mixed - it succeeds when explaining situations and offering guidance, but sometimes lacks objectivity and focuses too much on ratings. Specifically:
- Pre-9/11 and Katrina coverage failed to sufficiently investigate or warn of threats.
- Iraq invasion and 9/11 attack reporting informed viewers in real-time through on-the-ground reports.
- Oil spill and financial crisis coverage defined terms and issues, but primetime shows lack professionalism and evoke more emotion than analysis.
- After crises, CNN provides helpful information on moving forward, but could better prepare the public and continue fact-based reporting over ratings.
The document discusses BoatBeat, a national online resource that provides recreational boating safety information. It aims to make waters safer by providing information on hazards, safe practices, and accident prevention. BoatBeat offers media assets, safety topics, contacts, alerts and a collaborative space for partners. The webinar encourages media, law enforcement and the public to use BoatBeat's resources and get involved in contributing content to promote safe boating.

This document summarizes a 15-year study of life jacket wear rates among boaters. Key findings include:
- Life jacket wear increased among all age groups from intensive educational campaigns in California's Delta region from 2006-2008 and with mandatory regulations in 4 lakes in Mississippi from 2008-2011.
- The strongest increases were seen with children, anglers, and boats under 16 feet with both the education and regulation approaches.
- Higher enforcement of the Mississippi regulations correlated with higher wear rates, suggesting compliance increases with stronger enforcement.
- Both voluntary and mandatory strategies can effectively increase life jacket usage when combined with education, but regulations had more immediate and dramatic effects on changing boater behavior.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
ย
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

2. Overview
+ In June 2013, The Nevada Department of Wildlife arrested Erin
Brockovich for operating a boat under the influence
+ Brockovich was the subject of a year 2000 biopic and was
played by Julia Roberts
+ Although not a โmovie starโ herself, the Brockovich arrest
created extreme interest from โentertainment mediaโ and tested
agency resources
3. Celebrity News
+ Adding the element of celebrity to any event adds extreme
scrutiny
+ Celebrity can test your crisis media policies, practices and skills
+ The rules of PR change under Hollywoodโs gaze
+ It can happen to any of you at any time
4. More โFameโ Now Than Ever
+ Reality television
+ Armchair politicians, socialites and the โwealthyโ
+ Social media and YouTube โstarsโ
+ Fame is more common, harder to quantify yet drives the news
cycle like nothing else
+ Arguably Brockovich is โfamousโ but how famous?
5. Incident Summary
+ Fri. June 7, 2013 at about 6:30 pm game warden encounters Brockovich
as Operating Under the Influence
+ Law Enforcement team discusses at about 7:30 following arrest
+ Ed Lyngar is contacted by arresting officer at 9 pm during transport of
Brockovich to jail
+ She is booked into Clark County detention center
+ Makes bail sometime Saturday Morning
+ Media story broken by gossip site TMZ on Saturday at 9:30 pm
6.
7. Fun Facts Behind Incident
+ Ed Lyngar was asked to โholdโ it through weekend
+ Arresting officer had been out of FTO status for less than a
month, was 23 years old, first arrest
+ After the story broke, the Nevada Department of Wildlife issued
a pre-prepared statement
8. Statement
A Nevada Department of Wildlife game warden arrested Erin Brockovich-Ellis for
operating a boat under the influence of alcohol at Las Vegas Boat Harbor โฆ Our
game warden observed Brockovich-Ellis struggling to dock her boat and attempted
to assist her when he noticed โฆ several signs of being intoxicated. After a
thorough investigation, the game warden arrested Brockovich-Ellis and transported
her to the Clark County Detention Center. The suspect was cooperative โฆ
This incident serves as a reminder that boating under the influence is a crime on
par with driving under the influence. Many boaters do not realize that the penalties
for OUI and DUI are virtually identical, including immediate arrest and heavy fines.
9. All Media Hell Breaks Loose
+ Saturday night, all day Sunday, calls come in from all over the
world
+ Received an endless parade of phone calls for 48 solid hours
+ Late Sunday evening, Ed Lyngar got sick of calls, and reached
out to AP and gave a long interview to attempt to stop the
incoming calls
10.
11. Photo
+ Calls slowed Until Monday afternoon
when Ed Lyngar dropped this
unfortunate pic
+ Released with D.A. permission
+ 100 Million hits (said Katie Couric)
+ New statement included
+ Re-Ignited original firestorm
12. Follow Up Statement (Mon)
+ Attached is the Erin Brockovich-Ellis booking photo ... (basic case
info)
+ This case is just one of many OUI arrests game wardens with
Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) make every summer on
Nevada waters. Operating under the influence is a serious and
ongoing problem in boating โฆ (few more facts)
+ On the weekend of June 28th, 2013 Nevada and other boating
agencies across the nation will participate in โOperation Dry Waterโ a
weekend-long event designed to discourage drunken boating. Learn
more on the web at http://operationdrywater.org/
13.
14.
15. Brockovich Issues Apology
+ June 10, 2013 Brockovich issues very savvy โapologyโ
+ Blunted the impact of the final report issued 2 days later (that
included some unfortunate detail)
16.
17. The Aftermath
+ Several weeks of news churn
+ Our part mostly over following โmugโ and release of final report
+ Brockovich manages her own crisis media, culminating with an
interview on Katie Couric
+ http://katiecouric.com/videos/exclusive-erin-brockovich-breaks-
silence-oui-arrest/
18. Katie Couric Interview
+ Ended any worry of a โlegalโ defense
+ Shows savvy crisis media management by Brockovich
+ Public apology effectively โendedโ the story
19. Benefits to Celebrity
+ Without being a ghoul about it: Celebrity interactions offer an
opportunity
+ Few people care about issues such as OUI, until someone is
killed or someone famous is arrested: Feel good about
exploiting the latter
+ Do treat celebrities with compassion: They are human beings,
but we can and should NOT try and protect them from their own
actions
20. What To Do Differently
+ Release the mug shot on agency social media rather than over
e-mail
+ Would have issued a preemptive statement (original plan)
+ Conduct better follow up with reporters after
+ Convince DA to make PSA part of plea deal (we tried this but
DA balked at it)
21. Update on Brockovich
+ Has had several appearances since OUI arrest
+ Will not work with NDOW for PSA
+ Has successfully put the incident behind her
+ Did help raise the level of attention on OUI
22. In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.
-Andy Warhol
