From a presentation offered at the 2012 NE Regional Permaculture Convergence... An exploration of the rationale & strategic development behind the creation of a replicable pilot -- now growing in Philadelphia --called a ‘Cultural Engine’. A call & an invitation.
The document proposes a sustainability education center in Atlanta called [re]think. It aims to educate urban residents and visitors about sustainable practices through various exhibits, workshops, and lectures. The center would be located near popular attractions in a renovated building with natural lighting and materials. It would serve as a hub for a community of volunteers, educators, and individuals interested in sustainability. The goal is to provide accessible information and opportunities for people to apply their learning and choose more sustainable lifestyles, helping Atlanta progress in its sustainability efforts.
Social Innovation Generation presents a talk by Ezio Manzini titled "Creative Communities and Sustainable Qualities". The talk discusses how social innovation is changing the world and what design can do to trigger and support it. Manzini argues that another world is emerging through ideas that work to solve social problems through social innovation, collaboration, creativity, re-combining what exists, re-inventing traditions, and citizens involvement. He discusses what designers can contribute through (co)design and questions what is missing and what new qualities are emerging.
This document summarizes a presentation by Ezio Manzini on public and collaborative services. It discusses how public services could become platforms to enable and support citizens' active, collaborative behaviors. It provides examples of social innovations like community gardens and circles of care that blur roles between users and providers. The presentation argues that a new design paradigm is emerging that designs for active people and communities to shape their own lives. It also discusses how the global crisis may impact social innovation and how a new political awareness of social innovation is emerging worldwide.
[Challenge:Future] OLD OBJECTS - NEW SPACES : Fun + Meaning2 = 2030 finalsChallenge:Future
This document discusses problems caused by overconsumption and waste production on a global and local level. It proposes attracting people's attention to public spaces by having artists reuse old objects and trash to create sculptures, furniture, and games. This would involve collecting waste, holding workshops to make objects, and exhibiting them. The community, local authorities, artists, NGOs and sponsors would all play a role. Potential issues like authorities refusing permission or neighbors arguing about objects could be addressed through communication and understanding different perspectives. The overall goal is to reduce waste and encourage appreciation of public spaces.

Bahkan Bila tidak ditanggulangi segera melalui gerakan kepemudaan Universitas, bukan tak mungkin akan menyebabkan banjir rob dan bencana alam yang daat menyebabkan kerusakan lingkunag di wilayah jakarta utara
The document discusses asset-based community development (ABCD), which focuses on identifying and mobilizing community assets rather than deficiencies. It emphasizes that communities possess untapped skills, knowledge, associations, and other resources. ABCD aims to stimulate community-driven development by strengthening local agency and catalyzing change from within. The document contrasts this approach with traditional needs-based frameworks that emphasize problems and promote dependency on external aid.
This document outlines a vision for Cultural Engines, which are described as empowering communities through cultivating local leadership, accessing community gifts, and driving cultural paradigm shifts. Themes of the program include practices like permaculture, co-creation, and following one's heart. Goals are to feel love and nourishment in the work, grow a culture of regeneration, and affirm life. The program will run from June to November and teach skills like gardening, cooking, and event production. Participants will help establish a food system and community kitchen, create celebration events, and emerge as inspired community leaders and social entrepreneurs.

Our Mission, Purpose & calling is to assist in creating value for society. This presentation gives a very high-level view of the road-map that we have set out for ourselves. Articulated road-map will come up as we take up various channels that we have put forth in our presentation
The document introduces the Common Sense Regeneration Project which aims to promote sustainability education and practices in the Roaring Fork Valley. It thanks local supporters and outlines upcoming workshops on topics like gardening, food production and permaculture. The group hosts a community cafe game to have conversations about experiences of community, values around where they live, and to envision how the valley could become internationally renowned for sustainability by 2015.
This document summarizes a community project to educate neighbors about proper waste segregation. The project leader observed that community members were not segregating waste as required. To address this, they distributed labeled bags for biodegradable and non-biodegradable trash to each household. They also provided an educational session about the importance of segregation. The results were that the community became more aware of proper waste disposal and better prepared to preserve the environment.

This document is a senior project submitted by Charlotte Rachel Ashlock analyzing the global ecovillage movement, with a focus on francophone countries. It provides context on the origins and scope of the ecovillage movement, which began in the 1970s and aims to create sustainable human settlements that are in harmony with the natural world. The project examines six areas of progress in ecovillages: green economy, buildings/transportation, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, governance, and community/spirituality. It is based on interviews the author conducted with ecovillages around the world.
A Cultural Engine team from West Philadelphia spent their summer season at the Radical Faerie Sanctuary of Destiny in Vermont. They worked to establish daily rhythms and focus their efforts by starting in the areas nearest the kitchen, such as the patio, creek, and vegetable garden. Over the summer they terraformed gardens, established perennial plants, cleared the lower meadow, and built rocket stoves while living simply off the land. They expressed gratitude for their experiences and all they learned while strengthening the Destiny community.

Introduction to Regeneration -- Dream Vocations for the Present & FutureK is for Kitchen
This document contains the slides from a presentation by Frances Rose Subbiondo given at the Trans Health Conference in Philadelphia on June 15, 2013. The presentation discusses themes of regeneration including union, community, diversity, and interdependence. It proposes that cultural engines can be used to build the human infrastructure needed for a regenerative economy and society. Examples of cultural engines include zones of curriculum covering topics from personal health to regenerative enterprise. The presentation concludes by providing examples of how Rancho Mastatal in Costa Rica and a park in New Jersey were transformed from degraded land to regenerative spaces.
The document discusses the history and development of chocolate over centuries. It details how chocolate originated from cacao beans used by the Olmecs and Mayans as currency and medicine. Later, chocolate drinks became popular among the Aztecs and Europeans discovered chocolate in the 16th century, initially using it as medicine before it became widely consumed as a sweet treat.
In the winter of 2010, nature works founder & partner, Frances Subbiondo, worked in residence at a Center for Sustainable Living & Natural Building, called Rancho Mastatal in the wet/dry highland jungle of Costa Rica’s San José province. After almost a decade developing a beautiful physical infrastructure, the Ranch was ready to seriously invest in its own food system. Frances stepped up & in to that challenge -- & what follows is a pictorial narrative of that work.
The document describes the Permaculture Learning Garden project at Washington Park in Hudson County, New Jersey. It discusses the organizations involved in the project, including Green Collar Futures, Hudson County Open Space, The Dodge Foundation, and The Washington Park Association. It then details the work done to transform an empty lot into a permaculture garden, including building berms, swales, and rainwater catchment systems. Photos show the garden before and after its establishment. The garden helps capture stormwater and serves as an educational site for the local community.
The document discusses permaculture, which is described as an art and science of employing life in service of itself to create a safer and saner world beyond sustainability. Permaculture fosters self-supporting systems that grow in fertility, creativity, and possibility. It utilizes Earth Care ethics, People Care ethics, and Resource Share principles to design integrated systems that observe natural patterns and honor life. The goal is to design an ethical and elegant descent from current unsustainable peaks through regenerative living.
This document announces an edible forest garden workshop series in 2010 on food and medicine led by Dina Falconi. The workshop will include foraging and processing wild greens to make pesto, cooking wild gratins and flower butter, and making a catnip tincture. The day will also involve eating berries, herbal essences, infusions, aguas frescas and learning about currants, raspberries, elderberries, and blackberries. Photos will be provided by Mark Angelini and a slideshow by Frances Subbiondo.

Beautiful performance positions one to occupy a role in crews

20. SUMMARY
• A Cultural Engine weaves a container in which we may develop core
leadership skills, as we learn to bring the work of regeneration to
all of our Home communities.
• Participants will learn hard skills in building, nourishment, organic
gardening, community event production, & environmental education
-- & soft skills in regeneration & permaculture. All remain at choice
about their areas of focus.
• The installation of urban food systems & the creation of a
Community Supported Kitchen at the Starship Lollipop are the
program’s feature projects -- alongside the creation of two seasonal
celebration events.
• Graduates emerge inspired, broadly-skilled, de facto community
leaders, & comprise a troupe of social entrepreneurs.
