24. Acknowledgements
What do I like about the work on slides 21 and 22?
Texture, shading and processes. Based on the work from the previous two slides, I would like to be more concise with shading my
illustrations with a particular texture. I have noticed three different types of shading in the images - black fillings, stippling
and digital air brushing. I would like to experiment with creating depth and texture in my work digitally, and discover which
approach works best with my style. Additionally, after looking at my visual inspirations I have realised I like work with thin,
little or no linework.
What mediums do I enjoy using?
Punch needle/rug making, posca pens with fine liners, coloured pencils and pens and watercolour. I also enjoy making work with my
iPad and Procreate to digitalise my illustrations.
What mediums and processes do I want to improve my skills in over the next year?
I want to be good at screen printing because I like how an image can be repeated several times to sell prints and t-shirts. I am
considering buying a tufting gun to make bigger rugs in less time, and I would like to make more cushions with this equipment.
Additionally, I want to gain confidence and skills in Adobe illustrator so I feel more prepared to use the software after
university. If university has one, I would love to also experiment with an airbrush.
25. Self evaluation
Looking back on my work over the years, it is apparent that I have engaged with an array of creative
practises and illustrative styles. My focus in illustration has diverted away from detailed realism
and now I focus on drawing people in a looser way. When I was younger, my main artistic skill was my
attention to detail through linework, but now I want to show my creativity by playing around with
composition, shapes, form, textures and colour. I want to have fun with my work by bringing
liveliness, boldness and emotion.
Since studying illustration at university, I have learnt that I enjoy the narrative-based modules
the least because I want my work to go towards a design-based route. Contrastingly, I do think that
it is important for me to push myself to choose important modern-day topics I can get invested in,
as this will help me feel prepared for potential editorial or reportage jobs.
I am proud of the work I have made and direction it is developing towards. However, I want to feel
more confident in my decision making when it comes to selecting colour palettes, texture, and form.
I am a perfectionist which is both a blessing and a curse - I think this pushes me to continuously
work hard and adapt to new methods of working. I am very critical of my work and I am hoping this
will lessen as I immerse myself with the modules this year by using the facilities and workspaces to
their full advantages.
