Initial Position
cbs Corporate Business Solu-
tions helps Schaeffler Group to
implement a uniform SAP standard
throughout its international loca-
tions as part of a global SAP rollout
program over several years. Data
migration is a critical success fac-
tor in this context: Data has to be
quickly and securely migrated from
a large number of SAP and non-SAP
systems, then converted and har-
monized. The first challenge of per-
forming five parallel rollouts from
different source systems within 15
months was met by taking a consis-
tent template migration approach,
a standardized procedure and
using the transformation soft-
ware cbs Enterprise Transformer.

The Schaeffler Group is a glo-
bal acting integrated automotive
and industrial supplier. With more
than 82,000 employees, Schaeff-
ler is one of the world‘s largest
technology companies in family
ownership. It has a worldwide
network of manufacturing loca-
tions, research and development
facilities and sales companies at
approximately 170 locations in 50
countries.
Its main customer is the auto-
motive industry. The automotive
division develops and manufactu-
res forward-looking products in
the areas of engine, transmission
and chassis systems. The industri-
al division delivers products, such
as roll and plain bearings, linear
guidance systems, maintenance
products, monitoring systems, and
direct drives, to customers from
around 60 different industry sec-
tors. The product portfolio spans
from high-speed, high-precision
bearings with diameters in the mil-
limeter range to large bearings
with diameters of more than four
meters. In aviation and aerospace
engineering, the Schaeffler Group
is a leading manufacturer of high-
precision bearings for aircraft and
helicopter engines, as well as for
aerospace applications.

A Central SAP system
For many years now, Schaeffler
has been using SAP as the central
platform for all business applica-
tions. In 2011, Schaeffler decided
to launch a program to migrate the
remaining legacy systems to the
central SAP system. The plan was to
replace a large number of non-SAP
ERP systems in the Group as part
of a global SAP rollout program.
Furthermore, several existing SAP
systems were to be consolidated
in one central SAP system and one
client with harmonized processes.
This was a monumental task,
and – considering the sheer volu-
me and heterogeneity of the data
to be transferred from a variety of
source systems – a work-intensive
and tricky endeavor, particular-
ly in terms of data migration. If
something fails to go according
to plan and brings systems to a
standstill, a company in the auto-
motive supply industry may have
to pay dearly. Production down-
times could quickly result in high
contractual penalties. Automoti-
ve manufacturers cannot wait for
components for their production
processes, rather they depend on
just-in-time deliveries from their
suppliers.
Migration –
a Monumental Task
Schaeffler had already gained
extensive experience with SAP mi-
grations, and the company-specific
challenges and issues were known.
The myriad of data sources – dif-
ferent SAP systems with various
release versions, and systems of
several third parties – was, in itself,
a great challenge. The factors time,
global presence, speed, and securi-
ty had to be successfully managed.
The individual projects in the global
rollout program were largely run-
ning in tandem and had to be co-
ordinated precisely, across country
borders and time zones. Process
changes made the migration task
even more complex. Besides tech-
nical expertise, highly skilled em-
ployees and an understanding of
the process and application world
above data level were required.
Since the IT department at Schaeff-
ler does not consider data migrati-
on as its core task, a make-or-buy
decision was reached to commissi-
on a specialized consulting firm to
perform data migration.

Managed Service:
Everything from a Single
Source
Schaeffler commissioned the
Heidelberg-based company cbs
Corporate Business Solutions to
completely take over and imple-
ment data migration as a managed
service as part of its global rollout
projects. As a solution provider
for global system transformations
and data migrations, cbs offers its
customers a full service from one
source. On top of purely techni-
cal implementation at system and
data level, the consultants act as
migration advisors and subproject
managers to ensure that inter-
national transformation projects
are tailor-made, integrated in the
existing program organization,
and conducted in a methodical and
structured manner. Expert consul-
ting is absolutely essential particu-
larly when it comes to managing
complex requirements for data mi-
gration. Consultants who combine
technical migration expertise with
deep knowledge of processes and
applications are a success factor.
Migration Concept:
Common Understanding
as a Success Factor
A robust migration concept is
the basic prerequisite for an im-
plementation program that is suc-
cessful over several years. At Scha-
effler, workshops were, therefore,
scheduled at the project outset in
which cbs consultants and Scha-
effler IT staff clarified the migrati-
on requirements in detail and the
project-specific concepts directly
with the specialist departments.
Communicating on an equal level
is essential to the success of this
conceptual groundwork. Migration
consultants and specialists depart-
ments have to understand each
other, and the transfer of specia-
lized, business-related content, of
business processes and application
configurations to the technical le-
vel of system and data structures
has to be effective and understood
by both partners to achieve a con-
sistent and feasible result.

Migration Template
The migration consultants pri-
marily enhanced the customer‘s
knowledge of central business
objects, such as bills of material
and purchase orders, by increa-
sing their expertise in terms of the
structure and interaction of the
associated database tables below
application level. The results of the
intensive initial phase were a pro-
ject strategy tailored to the Group
and a technical migration concept
containing the target structure of
data, rules for how to implement
it, and a list of all objects to be mi-
grated. Together with the staff of
the Schaeffler Group, migration
templates were created with the
objective to re-use them in the in-
dividual rollout projects, without
having to start from scratch each
time. Being embedded in the glo-
bal rollout program organization,
Schaeffler Group enabled cbs, as a
central service center, to perform
multiple template-based migra-
tions and transfer data from hete-
rogeneous source systems using a
standardized procedure.
cbs ET Enterprise
Transformer
The transformation software
cbs ET Enterprise Transformer (cbs
ET) of the Heidelberg-based con-
sulting firm was used to enable
consistent, secure, fast and effici-
ent migrations from any system to
a central SAP system. A template-
based migration approach was ta-
ken each time to tap synergies ac-
ross projects.
The standard software cbs ET
Enterprise Transformer (cbs ET)
migrated, converted, and harmo-
nized the data. Equipped with com-
prehensive functions for selecting,
validating, transforming, and pos-
ting data, the software allows each
business object with all its structu-
ral dependencies to be mapped,
transformed, and transferred. And
the data flow always remains trans-
parent and comprehensible.
Sunrise in China, Sunset in
the United States
Flexibility and enthusiasm were
called for during the initial mig-
ration project, which lasted 15
months. ERP migration objects
from the areas of SAP Material Ma-
nagement, Sales and Distribution,
Product Planning, Quality Manage-
ment and Warehouse Manage-
ment had to be processed for five
countries – Germany, France, Czech
Republic, the USA, and China. With
a project of this dimension, it is
inevitable that requirements will
change, the work intensity will in-
crease sharply at times, and additi-
onal services, such as further data
validations and tests, will become
necessary. The fluctuating wor-
kload was balanced out by precise
resource planning. As several inter-
national projects were conducted
in tandem, various locations world-
wide had to be supported around
the clock. So, due to the different
time zones, a particularly long wor-

Schaeffler, emphasized:

king day sometimes commenced in
the morning with China and ended
in the evening with the USA.
Transparent, Fast, Secure
Thanks to the standardized,
tool-based data migration with cbs
ET, the migrations ordered by the
Schaeffler Group were comple-
ted on time, quality, and budget.
Various legacy systems, local da-
tabases, and applications were re-
placed, the number of third-party
systems reduced and replaced by
a consolidated system landscape
with uniform processes. Users at
the locations around the world
also benefit from harmonized pro-
cesses and data in performing their
day-to-day tasks.
Employees of the GSP (Global
Solutions & Projects) team in Nu-
remberg saw their main problem
successfully solved – to establish
a secure, transparent, fast, and
cost-efficient overall solution for
complex data migrations. Gerhard
Stößel, Director Global Solutions
& Projects at Schaeffler, empha-
sized: „Data migrations have been
causing more and more problems
in recent years. Now we have this
issue under control. Thanks to cbs,
we no longer lose any sleep over a
data migration.“
