Submission is a loaded topic these days. We don't completely understand what true biblical submission means. Let's look at what Scriptures say about it. Listen to the sermon at http://ottawacoc.org/sermons/402823-submission/

Relationships is very key to human existence. God will judge us based on: 1. Our relationship with Him; 2. Our relationship with one another; and 3. Our relationship with His creation. When you miss the ultimate, your relationship with God, you spoil the other two...because it is the foundation of any good, healthy relationships and being. A people who commit suicide, enter into depression, etc have a challenge in building relationships.
This is a highlight on Building Healthy Relationships.
Everyone needs friends, and you probably have always had at least one. A friend is defined as a person you know well and regard with affection, trust and respect. As you get older, some of your friendships will start to change, and some may grow deeper. You might also begin to know many more people, although not all of them will be your close friends. Chances are you will also start to spend more time with your friends, and maybe talk on the phone more. Changes in relationships are natural but not always easy.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Slide 2: Introduction to Mindfulness
Mindfulness, defined as the conscious, non-judgmental observation of the present moment, has deep roots in Buddhist meditation practice but has gained significant popularity in the Western world in recent years. In today's society, filled with distractions and constant stimuli, mindfulness offers a valuable tool for regaining inner peace and reconnecting with our true selves. By cultivating mindfulness, we can develop a heightened awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, leading to a greater sense of clarity and presence in our daily lives.
Slide 3: Benefits of Mindfulness for Mental Well-being
Practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, improving overall quality of life.
Mindfulness increases awareness of our emotions and teaches us to manage them better, leading to improved mood.
Regular mindfulness practice can improve our ability to concentrate and focus our attention on the present moment.
Slide 4: Benefits of Mindfulness for Physical Health
Research has shown that practicing mindfulness can contribute to lowering blood pressure, which is beneficial for heart health.
Regular meditation and mindfulness practice can strengthen the immune system, aiding the body in fighting infections.
Mindfulness may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity by reducing stress and improving overall lifestyle habits.
Slide 5: Impact of Mindfulness on Relationships
Mindfulness can help us better understand others and improve communication, leading to healthier relationships.
By focusing on the present moment and being fully attentive, mindfulness helps build stronger and more authentic connections with others.
Mindfulness teaches us how to be present for others in difficult times, leading to increased compassion and understanding.
Slide 6: Mindfulness Techniques and Practices
Focusing on the breath and mindful breathing can be a simple way to enter a state of mindfulness.
Body scan meditation involves focusing on different parts of the body, paying attention to any sensations and feelings.
Practicing mindful walking and eating involves consciously focusing on each step or bite, with full attention to sensory experiences.

• We can have a couple of reactions to this passage:
• Accept it.
• Ignore it.
• Intellectualize it.
• Find it offensive or challenging
• Your response demonstrates your level of engagement with
the text.
• Wrestling with the text demonstrates your faith in God.
• Submission is directly related to submission to authority
which in this case is God.

• When I wrestle with them I could beat them every time. But I

• Being called gentle today seems like an insult.
• We have misunderstood the definition.

• The Greek word Praus is translated as “gentle” or “meek”.
• Defintion: Praus (prah-ooce’) power under control, or power that
is submitted or surrendered.
• It requires great inner strength to be Praus.
• Refers more to a condition of the mind or heart.
• The Greek word Hesuchios is translated as “quiet”.
• Defintion: Hesuchios (hay-soo’-khee-os) tranquility arising from
within, peaceable and quiet.

• We are all equal before God (Gal 3:28).
• There are different roles in a marriage.

like slaves.
• This woman is obviously trusted with major decisions.
Prov 31 - Wife of noble character:
• Has a degree of autonomy.
• Has more than one business.
• Purchases land by herself.
• Better be unified than being right - unless this unity
brings disobedience obviously. (1 Cor 6:7, Eph 4:2-4)

of this, woman needs to submit.

• “Same way” - There is one standard. We are all called
to be like Jesus.
• “Weaker partner”
– Women are, in general, physically weaker than men.
– From the context I think this is referring to sensitivity.
– Women’s feelings can get hurt a lot easier than men’s.
– I don’t need to be considerate of my wife’s physical
strength.

• “Hinder your prayers” – This is the main point of the
whole paragraph.
• Hinder Greek: ekkopto {ek-kop'-to}:
- to cut out, cut off of a tree.
- metaph. to cut off occasion.
• Nothing will kill my connection to God faster than a fight

Editor's Notes
Put your cell phones away. All my passages written on the powerpoint.
Does anyone find this offensive? Remember that point as we will come back to it.
For those of you who have kids this may be a familiar scenario: a baby is crying.
Go over dialogue with wife.
The baby goes back to sleep while the couple is still arguing.
This is actually a conversation we have had.
If this is the limit of your understanding of what it means to submit or lead… that’s why you are here.
That is why I am teaching on it because if you don’t know what it means you will be unable to do either.
We want to define biblical leadership and biblical submission.
Stop right after “husbands” and explain goals.
I want to treat this subject with the proper sensitivity. I don’t want to be insensitive to the fact that this subject will make some women bristle at the thought of “submitting” to men.
There are a lot of misunderstandings on this phrase. Historically this passage has not been used to women’s advantage. It conjures images of limited opportunity, harassment, domestic violence, and worst.
I want to be sensitive to the fact that some people are going to have difficulties with this.
Some people might be tuning out right now.
Share my personal experience with having difficulties trusting.
My mom left when I was 1 year old.
I was raised by my dad.
I saw my mom maybe twice a year for a couple of hours until I was 13.
Even when there she would tell us to go play with our cousins.
Still to this day I call my dad on both mother’s and father’s day.
I remember girls criticizing men and elevating mothers.
Their criticism fell on deaf ears. I would literally zone out.
It took me a lot of listening to see that some women actually do have a point.
What I want to avoid this morning is for you to just stop right there and just tune out.
Johane reads the rest of the women’s part.
I recall reading this when I was 13 and thinking … That’s right!
Fortunately it is older men that are to instruct the younger ones.
No elder in the church would ever possibly teach this to a younger man.
After finish scripture
I have read a watched a lot of material on the subject of feminism, Jewish thought on the roles of men and women in preparation for this message.
Some of it enlightening, quite a bit of it has been extremely hateful on both ends of the spectrum. Men hating women, women hating men.
I’m a father with two young boys. I am pretty sure my wife is not looking at them thinking “Little rapists”. Likewise fathers are not looking at their daughters and thinking “she is so stupid”.
This is not the way God intended it. He made us different to complete each other.
State intent to go through passage and rip apart and be empty of self. Have the bible say what it is going to say.
I want to zero in on the terms in blue as we rip this apart.
It requires that you trust your husband and God to submit to him.
Like the cartoon, many of your ideas on submission and leading are probably incomplete.
The great part of expository preaching is that we don’t skip over anything in the bible. We don’t have 10 back to back messages on Grace and forget repentance. We don’t glaze over parts of the bible that might make us feel uncomfortable. Well here it is 1 Peter 3:1-7 with the opening line being…
“Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands.”
Is anyone offended? We’ll come back to this.
I am aware that many people are not going to hear what I am saying hear. You are only going to hear what you think I am saying or what it might mean. Some of you are going to be thinking I am advocating women being barefoot and pregnant.
V1. “In the same way”. Context is very important.
Be like Jesus
To submit can be compared with to trust. Here Jesus trusted.
If you love a man you trust him.
I remember when I was 13 reading that passage and thinking “Ya, that’s right”. “No, that’s wrong.”
That is not the attitude. In Eph 5:21-24. Both men and women need to submit. Don’t think women have the monopoly on submission.
One of the things I want to avoid (look at young men) is you having the same response I did which is why it is the older men in the church that teach you.
In the same way. Same way as what? Same way as Jesus.
Own Husbands – not every man in the church.
Accept it. Many cultures around the world still practice this and it is the norm.
Ignore it. How many women have done that?
Just keep reading and pretend like you never read this part.
Basically make God what you want him to be and not what he is.
This is a supreme act of arrogance essentially saying I know better and I am going to do what I want.
I didn’t like the parts of Christianity about giving sacrificially, no drugs, celibacy. There is a whole bunch of stuff I don’t like in there because it is difficult.
When I got into the church it felt like I had just been told that everything that I thought was fun was wrong.
Whether I like it or not doesn’t change God’s commands.
I submitted to change those behaviours and transformed my mind to not even see them as desirable out of submission to God. It wasn’t easy, it was a process.
Intellectualize it.
This was a cultural context from then and has no application to today. Wrong
Christianity emerged into a Greek world with people that did not share Jewish morality. Greek morality was as different from the Jews as
Find it offensive or challenging
Your response demonstrates your level of engagement with the text.
Wrestling with the text demonstrates your faith in God.
When I was studying the bible it kept telling me that everything that I thought was fun was wrong. I engaged the text as I disagreed with it, I didn’t want to do it, but I submitted myself to it because I had the underlying belief that God wrote this and I need to do what he says.
It was people’s behaviour in the church that helped convert me.
Behaviour, Purity and Reverence – This is how Javier was converted, it was by his wife’s example.
Gender roles exist. We were all created equal but we are created different.
Conversation with feminist “equal doesn’t mean same” No one can argue with that.
Things in the Jewish faith are much more codified.
Marc-Andre’s Jewish state modern practice of divorce. I’m already in jail
I will let you draw your own conclusions from these statistics.
Real man considers the needs of others ahead of his own.
Husband is head of wife
Christ is head of church
Husband needs to lead like Christ did: Christ did for the church!
Matt 14:13-14 John just killed and Jesus withdrew, yet feeds 5000. Tired, hungry, sexual needs…
Look at him! How would describe him?
What adjective would you want written on your tombstone?
Would you want to be known as Strong, Brave, Courageous, Faithful, Zealous.
How many of you would want to be remembered as Humble or better yet Gentle?
If you were walking in a graveyard and saw “Jason the Gentle” what would you think.
The term “Gentle” is grotesquely misunderstood today.
I wrestle with my sons, head locks etc… I can beat them every time. In fact give me a whole room full of 7 year olds…. What kind of FREAK would do that. I’m gentle with them.
Why is that; wives with your husband?
Matt 11;29… take my yoke… what does that mean? It means do as I say.
Why? B/c Jesus described himself as humble and gentle
Bunch of other examples in the NT that reference Jesus being gentle.
Jesus could have called legions of angels and Matt 26:53
How big is a Legion?
Pretty big.
A legion denoted a group of at least 6,000 Roman soldiers, although the total number could be higher. This means that anytime we read about a legion of anything, we can know it always refers to at least 6,000 of something.
Jesus had great strength but didn’t use it for his own purpose.
Isaiah 37:36 2 Kings 19:35
That is an awful lot of strength that he was holding back which leads us to the actual definition for gentle.
Praus… power under control
In the same way that I wrestle with my sons it is power under control.
It requires Great inner strength to know something or basically hold your tongue.
To not say something that is critical or biting when someone is down but to build them up. Jesus lifts up, Satan tears down. If we are gentle with one another we are building each other up.
Refers to a condition of the heart, no so much action.
Basically when the bible is talking about being gentle and quiet it is talking about having great strength but only using it for good and being at peace with that.
Objectively speaking this woman is beautiful… but scratch the surface…
Choose your wife with your ear, not with your eye.
Photoshop: This woman has been airbrushed, painted, etc…
There is a lot of societal pressure to look like the person in the magazine (not only on women).
Outward beauty should not be the thing that defines us. If it is then there is just a horrible emptiness.
It is fake.
I’m not saying don’t wear make-up. Who doesn’t try to present themselves in a favourable light.
v3. I tell my wife that she is beautiful all the time. That makes he feel good. If I really want my wife to feel good I need to follow this passage and compliment her on what I appreciate about her character, not her “outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes”
If something is of great worth in God’s sight… maybe we should pay attention? So… pay attention.
Just look at the Greek pantheon of Gods. All the men are 10m tall, built like Schwarzenegger, etc… All of the women are stunning except Medusa…
The current Western idea of holiness is much closer to the Greek Idea than The Jewish idea.
Choose your wife with your ear, not with your eye.
Substance vs. Style; Fashion vs. Function; Character vs. Charisma
Christianity was born into the Greek world. The Greeks saw beauty as holy. This was never a Jewish idea. The Jews saw Holiness as Beautiful.
Imagine Ester as you want, but perhaps she looked quite a bit different from the modern magazines.
Standards of beauty change from culture to culture and over time.
Skin tone, body shape, amount of facial hair, neck length, earlobe size, teeth filled away, tattoos.
Lilly was a broad shouldered, tall, physically strong woman of perfect genetic stock to make farm boys or football players.
If the horse dies hook old Lilly up to the plough and we are back in business.
Wanting women to look like the airbrushed magazine image is a very dangerous poison.
Don’t give way to fear… Easier said than done.
Abraham might be the father of faith but hear we see Sarah getting the credit she deserves.
For some women this might be compared to the Germans being told they should re-elect Hitler after WW2.
How difficult it is to submit to a perfect God who always acts in our best interest with perfect wisdom…
How much more to an imperfect man! Some men have anger problems, impatient, insensitive, are fiscally irresponsible… the whole sinful nature.
I have made mistakes, God has not.
What did Sarah do?
Obeyed and lord.
This does not make ration sense. Ghislain preached a message a while ago in which he cited our tendency today to want to always be rational and how this squeezes out faith because faith is not necessarily rational.
Righteousness never impressed Jesus. Just look at his interactions with the Pharisees.
Sarah was an old woman when she met Pharaoh. Yes some people age well but was there something else about Sarah that Pharaoh found attractive? I am assuming the guy had a harem of 20 year old. Was it some aspect of character that he was attracted to.
Historically submitting to men has not been a winning situation for women. Particularly when submitting to violent men.
Just from the history of this province alone, I have heard of numerous situations about the Church in this province.
This does not make ration sense. Ghislain preached a message a while ago in which he cited our tendency today to want to always be rational and how this squeezes out faith
As the expression goes “Don’t follow me, I will lead you straight to hell. Follow Jesus.”
In case you were hoping the Hebrew had some subtly that I was going to expose… Nope.
Rule over you – Hebrew: mashal {maw-shal'}: rule 38, ruler 19, reign 8, dominion 7, governor 4, ruled over 2, power 2,
Explain Eph 5:21 Church is the bride, Christ is over me, I’m over my wife, I’m to lead my wife like Christ did the Church.
