2. Jalandhar Overview
- Jalandhar is the third largest city in
Punjab and has a population of about 10
Lakh. It generates an estimated 500 TPD
of waste everyday.
- Currently, all of the waste ends up in the
Wariana Dump generating no revenue for
the Municipal Corporation.
- The city has about 35 major secondary
collection points and over 100 Garbage
Vulnerable Points.

3. Dakoha Model
● Ward number 12 waste pickers have consistently managed to get segregated waste of their own
effort to the compost pits at Dakoha.
● Under the supervision of MCJ supervisor Sarju, they bring the waste by 1PM and and help the
motivator Sonia ji and helper Rahul to weigh it and transfer to the pits.
● Dakoha has managed to create compost (quality yet to be tested) out of this wet waste. However,
the compost is not being sold currently.
● This model of utilising the informal sector to get quality segregated waste can be tried out in other
wards where the compost pits are present (11, 25, and 43).
● The waste pickers will be called safai sainik and their SHGs will be made under NULM. They will be
given ID cards, PPE kits, and Ayushman Cards.

Eg: Milk Packet. In my home, instead of getting milk packets, we get milk straight
from a nearby farm in a bottle. 2 bottles are dedicated for getting milk.

Eg: Coconuts. In my home, coconut is an asset. You can drink the coconut water and use the
coconut flesh in gravies or create coconut milk out of it. The dry coconut husk is used used for
burning (for outdoor cooking or heating water) or even as a scrubber and a loofah. The
coconut shell is dried and used for making ladles or soap dishes. No part is wasted.

What is Recycling?
- Process of converting waste into new and useful materials & objects.
- Eg: Kitchen Waste to Compost, Plastic bottles to T-shirts, newspapers to
pencils, etc.

8. Source Segregation
First step to recycling is source segregation. I.e., placing wet, dry, hazardous, and
sanitary waste separately at our homes, places of work, schools, and at the places
of waste generation.
