DNA is an unbranched polymer made up of nucleotides that contains the genetic program for all life. DNA contains the complete set of instructions to develop a complete organism from a fertilized egg. The genetic code for why organisms like onions and monkeys differ is contained in the differences in their DNA sequences. Nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA, contain nitrogenous bases, pentose sugars, and phosphate groups. The nitrogenous bases in DNA are either purines (adenine and guanine) or pyrimidines (cytosine and thymine).
