Exercise has short and long term effects on the heart. Short term effects include increased heart rate (HR) and stroke volume (SV) which leads to an increased cardiac output (Q or CO). Long term exercise can lower resting HR and increase maximum SV and cardiac output. Calculating cardiac output from HR and SV shows Karen has a higher resting cardiac output due to her higher SV, even though Bob has a higher HR.
