Stress In Loneliness
The answer for how to deal with stress in loneliness can only be found by the one who is suffering from it, although support from others may help.
Loneliness may be due to numbness, devoid of human activity. Indignation, uneasiness and depression follow loneliness. Pessimism is the main factor
that causes it. Reasons may include loss of someone, financial problem, quarrels, health issue, failure, etc. Some people like to spend some time alone,
mainly just to relax or to analyze the situations silently. Nothing is wrong in doing so, but loneliness killing oneself from inside is dangerous. An
individual is unable to understand what he/she is doing. Everything starts seeming badly and things become worse when loneliness turns into
depression....show more content...
Following the below mentioned tips with positive attitude will be helpful:
Be calm. Do not indulge in any activity so deeply that you start ignoring others in the process. Do not be impulsive and an introvert. Stay away from
fights. Argue only when required and make sure you do not ignore the point of view of the person with whom you are conversing. Listen to him/her
properly and then react positively. Whenever you are angry, control it, as reacting aggressively inanger may spoil your relations with others.
Health plays a vital role in controlling loneliness. Exercise for at least 30–45 minutes daily in a group. Involve in any sport. Eat healthy. Have fruits,
eggs, milk, oats, sprouted pulses, green vegetables, dry fruits, grains, etc. Eating such stuffs will never make you feel dull. Although fast food is quite
tasty, you must try to avoid it as it has low–nutritional value. Drink at least 3–4 liters of water a day to stay fresh and glow throughout the day. Stay
away from alcohol, caffeine, and cigarette. Sleeping for at least 7–8 hours a day is required to work effectively the next day. Take a shower in cold
water, as it will relax your body and produce a soothing effect on your

Emotional Loneliness
Psychology has many concepts and theories that we all can relate to. They explain why we do the things we do. Also explains why we feel the way
we do and how to meet are needs. One of many concepts is emotional loneliness. It is defined as having relationships that are not satisfying and
having no interpersonal relationships. There are many types of loneliness but not all are permanent. Emotional loneliness is when the person has no
intimate attachment figure. Social loneliness is when the person has no friendship network to lean on. Transient loneliness is different because it
happens after having satisfying relationships. A death or a move can cause transient loneliness. The disadvantages of being lonely are being at higher
risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer. I can relate to this a lot because I'm constantly lonely. I'm a nice person and caring; so I don't understand
why people don't want to hang out with me. I have trust issues because lots of...show more content...
It's to maximize benefits and minimize costs. This concept helps us determine the worth of the relationship. Rewards could be things like gifts,
recognition, smile or a nod. Costs would be punishments like beating, humiliation or a frown. An example of this concept would be asking
someone to go on a date with you. The person says no which is a punishment. Since they said no you are likely to be nervous about doing this
interaction again in the future. If you ask someone on a date and get a yes then it's a reward which makes you likely to do it again. When I cried in a
therapist office before and only received a blank stare; I felt uncared about. I was experiencing social exchange theory when I cried and wanted
sympathy back but didn't get it. This is another reason I don't like therapy because I open myself up and feel I get no reward back like a hug. I find it
very cold hearted and

Loneliness Essay
Loneliness is an emotion that people know all too well, and it is different for each person While many people see loneliness akin or solitude or the
act being alone, it is more of a state of mind. It causes people to feel alone, empty, and unwanted. People who are lonely want to make a connection
with others, but due to their state of mind it is difficult to make friends. While spending time alone can offer a rich psychological experience, too
much isolation can have a negative impact on one's life. An unhealthy amount of solitude will lead to many illnesss and ravage one's physical health.
In the past loneliness was viewed as a social problem. Today aloneness is considered a health crisis that spreads to others. The UCLA Loneliness Scale

Lonesomeness can also lead to depression. When someone is lonely, their natural responses to positive image and events become suppressed.
People see the world through a negative filter and may think life is hopeless, which makes it more difficult to summon up energy and bravery to
find happiness and change. Loneliness is such a huge problem that even books have been written about the health crisis. One example is the
novella, "Of Mice and Men", written by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck's central theme throughout the entirety of the short story is loneliness and how
it can change people's minds and bodies in extreme ways. Many characters in the book are plagued with lonesomeness. For example, George, one
of the main characters, goes around to different farms looking for work with his friend, Lennie. He is talking to Slim, who is also one of the many
working hands on the ranch, "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone... After a long time they get mean. They get wantin to fight"
(Steinbeck). These ranchers have been alone for so long that they're desperate to make any connection, even a violent one. While many people
believe spending time alone is terrible for one's health and emotional status, it is necessary for our brains to unwind and recharge and is crucial to
certain areas of brain activity. Let's face it, people can be pretty distracting. "When one removes as many distractions and interruptions as they can from
a day," says Dr. Carter, "You

Loneliness In American Society
Loneliness is often not considered as a risk to a person physical health. People are subject to loneliness at all stages of life, but it is more frequent for
the elderly. The effects of the lack of companionship or the perception of it could represent bad consequences of the health state of older people. In
today's American society it is very common that the elder people is left in nursery homes so the family does not have to actually take care of them and
not feel guilt about it. Even though at the nursery homes they are well taken care of, they can experience a great amount of loneliness because of
the lack of close contact with their family. I will explore the effects of loneliness and its relations to health risk on the last stage of life. My research
will analyze how people experience loneliness and their unconscious physical reaction to it. The case study from which my research is stating out is
known as The Roseto effect. Around 1960s the Italian community of Roseto, Pennsylvania, had a heart attack rate of half the average on the rest of the
communities around them. Researchers found that the only factor different between the Roseto people and the people of the other communities was
the lack of loneliness on the Rosetans. Over the years the community "Americanize" and stated to have isolated individuals that were stressing out
with American life and drifted away from the close community; as a result of this by 1992 the Rosetans had the same heart attack rates as the rest. In
my research I want to explore and explain both sides of the Roseto effect, having a close community and low...show more content...

Descriptive Essay On Being Alone
Alone. My emotions all pertained to this word – : being neglected because I was different from others. My prickly exterior caused people to overlook
me. And my friends, let's just say I didn't have any. I never had an intention to hurt anyone, but this was who I was and the reason for my
loneliness. As days, months, even years passed, people ignored the true beauty in me. I was constantly left sitting alone in the cold, damp corner
with no one to interact with. This was my fate. My life was basically forlorn. I was going to be alone, forever. It wasn't until a sunny, summer day
when hope came in the form of hands picking me up from the dark place I was sitting. It was the first time someone examined me! This boy, my
new owner, had passion gleaming from his eyes: he was waiting for this moment to pick me up and take me home. But why me? Why after all this
waiting has someone finally chose me? After all, there were plenty of other plants at the store. Why a cactus? As he carried me back to his house I
began to worry. What if I was ignored and placed in the corner like at the store? There was a maelstrom of conflicts and apprehensions inside me, but
as we entered his home, it was empty. I was his first plant! Being the first plant in a house was a privilege, and it was unbelievable that a plant as
insignificant as me was given this privilege. My owner's hospitality was endless: I was constantly fed water when thirsty, fed fertilize r when
hungry, and given enough sunlight when cold to grow. It was like he could read my mind and gavegive me whatever I wanted, whenever I needed it.
The feeling of loneliness was fading away, and I felt as if I finally had someone who cared about me. Rather than judging my current deamor like the
rest of the customers, my owner saw my inner beauty, thus, forming an unbreakable bond between us. Being a cactus made it hard for me to fit in with
other plants, yet after all the time I spent with my owner–or should I say caretaker– I felt that everything was going to be fine, that was until... My
caretaker began to gain a passion for other plants, and when summer arrived there came a different plant every month ranging from trending tropical to
durable desert plants. His home was

Loneliness Is A Mental State Of Being Alone
Have you ever felt lonely? Loneliness affects almost everyone at least once in his or her life. In the article, "Let's Talk About Loneliness," Stephen A.
Diamond, a psychologist posits that, "At least 20% of Americans today would describe themselves as feeling lonely" (Diamond 1). Loneliness not only
emotionally affects you, but it can also affect you physically. However, loneliness must not be mistaken for alienation. The two are very different from
one another. Alienation is the state of being alone, while loneliness is the mental state of feeling alone. The two also contain different symptoms,
consequences, and treatments. Thereby, this paper will explore the differences between alienation and loneliness, through the causes and effects of
these issues.
To begin with, loneliness is a mental state. Loneliness has no single common cause. Loneliness can cause people to feel depressed, empty, unwanted,
and alone. Some reasons people feel lonely are: physical isolation, moving, divorce, death of a loved one, and low self–esteem. In the article,
"Loneliness: Causes, Effects and Treatments for Loneliness," Kendra Cherry claims, "Loneliness, according to many experts, is not necessarily about
being alone [although this is a factor]. Instead it is the perception of being alone and isolated that matters the most" (Cherry 2). While loneliness is
strongly connected to genetics, it is also factored by your current situation. For example, a person who has just ended a four–year

Essay On Loneliness
Everyone feels lonely at some point in their life. Whether they have lost a friend, family member, or loved one. Loneliness can have many negative
effects on a person's well–being. Some results could be craziness, depression, or even sickness. These effects could lead to even worse mental health
issues. In order for humans to be happy, friendships and connections are vital; as well as never keeping isolated from the world. The characters
George, Lennie and Crooks were all affected by loneliness. All these characters were affected in different ways. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men,
loneliness has a prominent affect on the characters' mental health, as well as illustrate why friendships are vital. First of all, loneliness for...show more

Secondly, Lennie suffered from loneliness because he was different. He had trouble making friends because he wasn't like everyone else. Lennie
always counted on George to be his guardian. He always knew that George would keep him safe. In contrast to George, Lennie loved George's
company. The presence of George is what made Lennie feel safe. All of Lennie's life, George was the only person he could remember. The
dangerous thought that always filled Lennie's mind was the thought of losing George. All these years, Lennie always had George to keep him
company. This idea is what drove him insane. Although, Lennie's mental stability is already poor, this fear made it worse. Lennie was always
trying to be nice and apologetic to George, just so Lennie could stay with him. To show George that he cares, Lennie reassures, "But I wouldn't eat
none, George. I'd leave it all for you. You could cover your beans with it and I wouldn't touch none of it." This shows how Lennie wanted only the
best for George. The fear of being lonely one day was Lennie's weakness. Lennie's mental health was greatly affected by the thought of losing
George. Lastly, Crooks struggled with loneliness because he was heavily discriminated against. Crooks was the only black worker on the ranch. He
had no friends or family to keep him company. All Crooks has are his possessions to help him cope with his loneliness. Friendships were something
that Crooks lacked. He was

On March 9, 2017, The Boston Globe published an article written by Billy Baker titled, "The biggest threat facing middle–age men isn't smoking or
obesity. It's loneliness." It was a remarkable article filled will startling facts about the adverse effects loneliness has on a lifespan. After reading the

I use to be social. I had a multitude of friends. I went out almost every night. I was gregarious. Everything slowly began to change towards the end
of 2015. In a matter of months, I went from a beaming newlywed to a being who could barely leave his home. Consequently, my defense
mechanisms were to isolate myself by pushing people away. I started working less and furthermore made a home for myself on my living room's
couch. Another part of the wall was built. When my husband was home, I tried to keep it together. I failed miserably. My spouse knew something
was wrong, but like myself he was hoping it would run its course. It didn't, it worsens. On a snowy, cold, March afternoon, he had myself get
dressed and into a cab. We headed downtown and ended up in a waiting room of a psychiatrist office. I remember being so scared. I had this
unrealistic fear that being there meant that the next step would be a psych ward. I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and severe depression,
and later Bipolar disorder. Here I was 40, seeing a psychiatrist for the first time, and weekly therapy. I was ashamed and convinced this would all be
over in a couple of months. But, this isn't Hollywood, where all is solved on a few visits on a therapist

Did you know the physical effects of loneliness are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day? Or that loneliness raises your chance of death by
26%. Throughout history we've known loneliness is harmful. Emily Dickenson called loneliness, "The horror not to be surveyed." In the
beginning of the Bible, it says, "It is not good for the man to be alone." And yet, in our western society we constantly seek after individualism. Our
society glorifies going it alone. In a survey done by the PEW research center, parents ranked independence as more important that empathy,
tolerance, and persistence. The drive to go it alone is deeply rooted in our culture and we're seeing the effects of what we've sown. Mental illness is
on the rise. One in four women between 16 and 24 have harmed themselves, another 26% of these women are also affected by anxiety, depression,
phobias or OCD. Depression and loneliness are at an all–time high. In the Facebook era we seem to have forgotten the value of community. Loneliness
is especially dangerous for leaders. In The Prince, the world Machiavelli lays out for a leader is a lonely one. His "better to be feared than loved"
principle is an idea that stifles community and isolates a leader. The story of Esther, however, proposes a different view ofleadership, one in which
community is of high value. While Esther's courage was heroic, it would not have been possible without the support of her community, specifically
Mortdecai. Through Esther, we

journey to make something out of himself. He never got along with his parents so he left the house and started to make money so he could win
Daisy back. He lived by himself and was involved in illegal activities such as bootlegging. In the middle of his life, he lived by himself in a beautiful

At his parties he never met anyone and never tried to form any friendships. He was very "self–centered" in the way that he only cared about his dreams
of meeting Daisy. His "self–centeredness" did lead him to a very lonely life. He made decisions to live for Daisy and only Daisy. Gatsby did become
friends with Nick but in a way, he only used Nick as a way of getting closer to Daisy. I'm sure he cared about Nick and was a true friend but he might
have only become friends at first with him because he knew Daisy. Gatsby pretty much only cared and about his dreams and because of it his life was
really lonely and not fun at all.
At the end of the book Jay Gatsby paid for his consequences for living all his life with one dream. He did get close with Daisy but because he did
he had his life taken away from him. He was murdered because Daisy was too conceded to admit to her mistake of hitting Wilson's wife Myrtle.
Gatsby paid for her mistakes. If Gatsby had not become close with Daisy, Tom would never have hated him so much. "I suppose the latest thing is
to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that's the idea you can count me out" (pg.137). Tom did not like the
idea one bit, that Daisy was getting closer and closer with Gatsby. If Gatsby had stayed away from Daisy, Tom would have never hated him and
probably wouldn't have told Wilson that it was Gatsby's car that hit Myrtle. Gatsby made an enemy with

Definition Of Loneliness Essay
Loneliness can be defined in so many ways. The plain, colorless, and parched meaning that sits unread in the dictionary doesn't give it any true
value. The one definition that I feel truly defines loneliness is the following quote by Daniel Gillard. "Loneliness can be a feeling of shame for not
being a good enough person to be something other than lonely, and being too ashamed to be capable of ending the feeling of loneliness." There are
many different types of loneliness. It does different things to us. This story isn't about what loneliness is, it's about what it truly means, how it affects
people, and how difficult it is to overcome. This is the story of the essence of loneliness.

"Come on, it's right over here."
He walked silently behind me. The 500 building was completely empty. Those were the old rooms. I assumed he was going to Ms. Smith the guidance

Living on campus during the four years of my undergraduate work afforded the invaluable chance to become an invaluable member of a diverse

Emotional intelligence "refers to our ability to effectively and correctly process emotional information to solve personal and interpersonal problems"
(Zysberg, 2012, p. 38). By the same token, it would make sense that our subjective interpretation of loneliness is inextricably linked to our managing
relationships with others and ourselves. Therefore, the research question is: is there an association between loneliness and emotional intelligence? The
experiment involved 134 (106 female, 28 male) undergraduate psychology students from colleges in northern Israel, which measured the variables of
loneliness, emotional intelligence and its correlates, life satisfaction and meaning of life. Zysberg (2014) explains that "they [participants] filled

Results of the study indicated that there was a strong relationship between loneliness and emotional intelligence, with the latter allowing a better

In medieval times the word "alone" was referred to a sense of completeness in one's own being (Cooper). Balancing time for yourself and friends is
not challenging when your friends understand. As much as humans are social beings, we also require time to discover ourselves. Douglas
Coupland once said, "Remember the time you feel lonely is the time you most need to be by yourself. Life's cruelest irony" (Martin). The benefits
gained from discovering yourself could be to have the ability to help your friends discover themselves. Knowledge would keep passing along and
would make for a more independent society. One of the greatest pleasures that come from being away from all of the "noise" is having the ability to
invest time where you want to invest. Each and every individual can be unique, what truly sets someone apart is the time spent carving the stone to
shape one's life. Instead of following the herd of sheep, break away and pursue your own dreams! Live life with no regrets and do everything you
desire. True happiness comes from within, and nothing outside should have the power to change

The Novel 'Of Mice and Men' was set in the 1930s in Soledad and written by John Steinbeck. The theme of loneliness is presented to the reader
when we first open the book as the word Soledad means alone. In the 1930s there was a lot of discrimination and intolerance of minorities and all
the characters I am going to mention are discriminated against at some point in the book. Section four however is very significant as this section
epitomises the theme of loneliness through the presentation of the characters. In my essay I am going to focus on three characters who all convey a

Loneliness Essay
To be lonely is an easy thing, being alone is another matter entirely. To understand this, first one must understand the difference between loneliness
and being alone. To be alone means that your are not in the company of anyone else. You are one. But loneliness can happen anytime, anywhere. You
can be lonely in a crowd, lonely with friends, lonely with family. You can even be lonely while with loved ones. For feeling lonely, is in essence a
feeling of being alone. As thought you were one and you feel as though you will always be that way. Loneliness can be one of the most destructive
feelings humans are capable of feeling. For loneliness can lead to depression, suicide, and even to raging out and hurting friends and/or...show more

Generally almost all loneliness can be traced back to low or below "average" self–esteem. Chronically lonely people will usually have low opinions of
themselves. They may think of themselves as unintelligent, unattractive, broken, unwanted, not worthy of good things, no good, unable to do anything
right, and/or socially isolated. Unlike many other emotionally hurting people, the chronically lonely usually know what is wrong, but like many others
they don't believe they can do anything to fix it, or, circling back to the low self–esteem, they may also believe they are not worth of happiness.
It takes the strong support of a good friend(s) or other loved one(s) to help the lonely conquer their feelings. Simply trying to counteract the low
self–esteem verbally will not do it, though, for in their down state, they will see the person as just trying to be nice or spare their feelings. The lonely
must be shown in more subtle, yet clear ways that they are not the useless person they perceive themselves to be. For example, with a person who
feels particularly unloved and unwanted, someone close to them should try to take a little extra time to spend with that person and try to set aside a
little extra time to talk to the person.
Nothing special needs to be said or done, simply spending time, willing and without having been asked, allows the lonely one to see that they are
loved. That they are worthy of being associated with and that there are

Definition Essay On Loneliness
Loneliness As people get older, their social circles begin to shrink. Their worlds become smaller. When they feel the impossibility of establishing
contact with others, they know the thing they fear strongly comes. It is loneliness. So, what exactly is loneliness? A narrow definition suggests that
it is an unpleasant feeling when being alone. However, anyone who had experienced loneliness knows that it doesn't necessarily mean being alone.
Among older adults, loneliness is both a sad feeling caused by a lack of communication and a danger affecting both physical and mental health.
Loneliness doesn't necessarily mean being alone. People connect and confuse the two words "alone" and "lonely" all the time. The definition of alone
is "having no one else present." It is a state of being in which a person is by himself, and...show more content...
On the physical side, loneliness can cause seniors to engage in unhealthy behaviors. For example, some seniors turn to alcohol to escape the
feeling of loneliness or to help ease the pain of grief. Some feel empty, and excess food becomes the way to fill that emptiness. Others spend more
time indoors and avoid physical activities. This lack of exercise can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other issues. On the mental
side, loneliness can have major effects as well. For example, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery &
Psychiatry, older adults who suffer from loneliness have a 64% greater risk of dementia. Dementia, a general term for loss of memory and other
mental abilities, is one of the leading causes of death for older people. Another effect of loneliness is depression, a serious mood disorder with
suicide as a possible outcome. Lonely seniors who have been sad for a long time are at a high risk of depression. As can be seen, feeling loneliness
hurts, and it hurts even more when people don't have anyone to share it

In Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson, the author creatively develops the story of different individuals living in Ohio at the turn of the century.
The wide multitude of characters developed throughout the twenty four stories in the complete piece, all have lives slightly deformed by the loneliness

The reader by the end of the piece can assume that each story is drawn from a character of this unnamed author. This first story introduces many of
the common themes to be included throughout the story including isolation and lives corrupted by loneliness, as characterized by the author
through the narrator. In the story Surrender, the characterization of Louise Bentley encompasses the carried theme of loneliness. Not only is Louise
somewhat alienated from her family due to her lack of relationship with her father, she is "stuck" in a failing marriage due to her impulsive craving
for love at a young age. We see her character turned bitter and angry as a result of her life choices. The reader essentially experiences a "slice" of
each character's life, in an effort to understand how their particular isolation has impacted their life. In a story later in Winesburg, Loneliness, we see a
character affected by his loneliness to the point of near

Stress In Loneliness

  • 1. Stress In Loneliness The answer for how to deal with stress in loneliness can only be found by the one who is suffering from it, although support from others may help. Loneliness may be due to numbness, devoid of human activity. Indignation, uneasiness and depression follow loneliness. Pessimism is the main factor that causes it. Reasons may include loss of someone, financial problem, quarrels, health issue, failure, etc. Some people like to spend some time alone, mainly just to relax or to analyze the situations silently. Nothing is wrong in doing so, but loneliness killing oneself from inside is dangerous. An individual is unable to understand what he/she is doing. Everything starts seeming badly and things become worse when loneliness turns into depression....show more content... Following the below mentioned tips with positive attitude will be helpful: Be calm. Do not indulge in any activity so deeply that you start ignoring others in the process. Do not be impulsive and an introvert. Stay away from fights. Argue only when required and make sure you do not ignore the point of view of the person with whom you are conversing. Listen to him/her properly and then react positively. Whenever you are angry, control it, as reacting aggressively inanger may spoil your relations with others. Health plays a vital role in controlling loneliness. Exercise for at least 30–45 minutes daily in a group. Involve in any sport. Eat healthy. Have fruits, eggs, milk, oats, sprouted pulses, green vegetables, dry fruits, grains, etc. Eating such stuffs will never make you feel dull. Although fast food is quite tasty, you must try to avoid it as it has low–nutritional value. Drink at least 3–4 liters of water a day to stay fresh and glow throughout the day. Stay away from alcohol, caffeine, and cigarette. Sleeping for at least 7–8 hours a day is required to work effectively the next day. Take a shower in cold water, as it will relax your body and produce a soothing effect on your Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Emotional Loneliness Psychology has many concepts and theories that we all can relate to. They explain why we do the things we do. Also explains why we feel the way we do and how to meet are needs. One of many concepts is emotional loneliness. It is defined as having relationships that are not satisfying and having no interpersonal relationships. There are many types of loneliness but not all are permanent. Emotional loneliness is when the person has no intimate attachment figure. Social loneliness is when the person has no friendship network to lean on. Transient loneliness is different because it happens after having satisfying relationships. A death or a move can cause transient loneliness. The disadvantages of being lonely are being at higher risk for cardiovascular disease and cancer. I can relate to this a lot because I'm constantly lonely. I'm a nice person and caring; so I don't understand why people don't want to hang out with me. I have trust issues because lots of...show more content... It's to maximize benefits and minimize costs. This concept helps us determine the worth of the relationship. Rewards could be things like gifts, recognition, smile or a nod. Costs would be punishments like beating, humiliation or a frown. An example of this concept would be asking someone to go on a date with you. The person says no which is a punishment. Since they said no you are likely to be nervous about doing this interaction again in the future. If you ask someone on a date and get a yes then it's a reward which makes you likely to do it again. When I cried in a therapist office before and only received a blank stare; I felt uncared about. I was experiencing social exchange theory when I cried and wanted sympathy back but didn't get it. This is another reason I don't like therapy because I open myself up and feel I get no reward back like a hug. I find it very cold hearted and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Loneliness Essay Loneliness is an emotion that people know all too well, and it is different for each person While many people see loneliness akin or solitude or the act being alone, it is more of a state of mind. It causes people to feel alone, empty, and unwanted. People who are lonely want to make a connection with others, but due to their state of mind it is difficult to make friends. While spending time alone can offer a rich psychological experience, too much isolation can have a negative impact on one's life. An unhealthy amount of solitude will lead to many illnesss and ravage one's physical health. In the past loneliness was viewed as a social problem. Today aloneness is considered a health crisis that spreads to others. The UCLA Loneliness Scale ...show more content... Lonesomeness can also lead to depression. When someone is lonely, their natural responses to positive image and events become suppressed. People see the world through a negative filter and may think life is hopeless, which makes it more difficult to summon up energy and bravery to find happiness and change. Loneliness is such a huge problem that even books have been written about the health crisis. One example is the novella, "Of Mice and Men", written by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck's central theme throughout the entirety of the short story is loneliness and how it can change people's minds and bodies in extreme ways. Many characters in the book are plagued with lonesomeness. For example, George, one of the main characters, goes around to different farms looking for work with his friend, Lennie. He is talking to Slim, who is also one of the many working hands on the ranch, "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone... After a long time they get mean. They get wantin to fight" (Steinbeck). These ranchers have been alone for so long that they're desperate to make any connection, even a violent one. While many people believe spending time alone is terrible for one's health and emotional status, it is necessary for our brains to unwind and recharge and is crucial to certain areas of brain activity. Let's face it, people can be pretty distracting. "When one removes as many distractions and interruptions as they can from a day," says Dr. Carter, "You Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Loneliness In American Society Loneliness is often not considered as a risk to a person physical health. People are subject to loneliness at all stages of life, but it is more frequent for the elderly. The effects of the lack of companionship or the perception of it could represent bad consequences of the health state of older people. In today's American society it is very common that the elder people is left in nursery homes so the family does not have to actually take care of them and not feel guilt about it. Even though at the nursery homes they are well taken care of, they can experience a great amount of loneliness because of the lack of close contact with their family. I will explore the effects of loneliness and its relations to health risk on the last stage of life. My research will analyze how people experience loneliness and their unconscious physical reaction to it. The case study from which my research is stating out is known as The Roseto effect. Around 1960s the Italian community of Roseto, Pennsylvania, had a heart attack rate of half the average on the rest of the communities around them. Researchers found that the only factor different between the Roseto people and the people of the other communities was the lack of loneliness on the Rosetans. Over the years the community "Americanize" and stated to have isolated individuals that were stressing out with American life and drifted away from the close community; as a result of this by 1992 the Rosetans had the same heart attack rates as the rest. In my research I want to explore and explain both sides of the Roseto effect, having a close community and low...show more content... • 5. Descriptive Essay On Being Alone Alone. My emotions all pertained to this word – : being neglected because I was different from others. My prickly exterior caused people to overlook me. And my friends, let's just say I didn't have any. I never had an intention to hurt anyone, but this was who I was and the reason for my loneliness. As days, months, even years passed, people ignored the true beauty in me. I was constantly left sitting alone in the cold, damp corner with no one to interact with. This was my fate. My life was basically forlorn. I was going to be alone, forever. It wasn't until a sunny, summer day when hope came in the form of hands picking me up from the dark place I was sitting. It was the first time someone examined me! This boy, my new owner, had passion gleaming from his eyes: he was waiting for this moment to pick me up and take me home. But why me? Why after all this waiting has someone finally chose me? After all, there were plenty of other plants at the store. Why a cactus? As he carried me back to his house I began to worry. What if I was ignored and placed in the corner like at the store? There was a maelstrom of conflicts and apprehensions inside me, but as we entered his home, it was empty. I was his first plant! Being the first plant in a house was a privilege, and it was unbelievable that a plant as insignificant as me was given this privilege. My owner's hospitality was endless: I was constantly fed water when thirsty, fed fertilize r when hungry, and given enough sunlight when cold to grow. It was like he could read my mind and gavegive me whatever I wanted, whenever I needed it. The feeling of loneliness was fading away, and I felt as if I finally had someone who cared about me. Rather than judging my current deamor like the rest of the customers, my owner saw my inner beauty, thus, forming an unbreakable bond between us. Being a cactus made it hard for me to fit in with other plants, yet after all the time I spent with my owner–or should I say caretaker– I felt that everything was going to be fine, that was until... My caretaker began to gain a passion for other plants, and when summer arrived there came a different plant every month ranging from trending tropical to durable desert plants. • 6. Loneliness Is A Mental State Of Being Alone Have you ever felt lonely? Loneliness affects almost everyone at least once in his or her life. In the article, "Let's Talk About Loneliness," Stephen A. Diamond, a psychologist posits that, "At least 20% of Americans today would describe themselves as feeling lonely" (Diamond 1). Loneliness not only emotionally affects you, but it can also affect you physically. However, loneliness must not be mistaken for alienation. The two are very different from one another. Alienation is the state of being alone, while loneliness is the mental state of feeling alone. The two also contain different symptoms, consequences, and treatments. Thereby, this paper will explore the differences between alienation and loneliness, through the causes and effects of these issues. To begin with, loneliness is a mental state. Loneliness has no single common cause. Loneliness can cause people to feel depressed, empty, unwanted, and alone. Some reasons people feel lonely are: physical isolation, moving, divorce, death of a loved one, and low self–esteem. In the article, "Loneliness: Causes, Effects and Treatments for Loneliness," Kendra Cherry claims, "Loneliness, according to many experts, is not necessarily about being alone [although this is a factor]. Instead it is the perception of being alone and isolated that matters the most" (Cherry 2). While loneliness is strongly connected to genetics, it is also factored by your current situation. • 7. Essay On Loneliness Everyone feels lonely at some point in their life. Whether they have lost a friend, family member, or loved one. Loneliness can have many negative effects on a person's well–being. Some results could be craziness, depression, or even sickness. These effects could lead to even worse mental health issues. In order for humans to be happy, friendships and connections are vital; as well as never keeping isolated from the world. The characters George, Lennie and Crooks were all affected by loneliness. All these characters were affected in different ways. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, loneliness has a prominent affect on the characters' mental health, as well as illustrate why friendships are vital. Lennie always counted on George to be his guardian. He always knew that George would keep him safe. In contrast to George, Lennie loved George's company. The presence of George is what made Lennie feel safe. All of Lennie's life, George was the only person he could remember. The dangerous thought that always filled Lennie's mind was the thought of losing George. All these years, Lennie always had George to keep him company. This idea is what drove him insane. Although, Lennie's mental stability is already poor, this fear made it worse. Lennie was always trying to be nice and apologetic to George, just so Lennie could stay with him. To show George that he cares, Lennie reassures, "But I wouldn't eat none, George. I'd leave it all for you. You could cover your beans with it and I wouldn't touch none of it." This shows how Lennie wanted only the best for George. The fear of being lonely one day was Lennie's weakness. Lennie's mental health was greatly affected by the thought of losing George. Lastly, Crooks struggled with loneliness because he was heavily discriminated against. Crooks was the only black worker on the ranch. He had no friends or family to keep him company. All Crooks has are his possessions to help him cope with his loneliness. Friendships were something that Crooks lacked. He was Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It drove the plot by surrounding the main character and how he believed love could have taken away his loneliness. The characters were looking for something that was never there and devoted their lives to it. Each person went through something in the book that has made them want to be around others. • 9. Loneliness: Article Analysis On March 9, 2017, The Boston Globe published an article written by Billy Baker titled, "The biggest threat facing middle–age men isn't smoking or obesity. It's loneliness." It was a remarkable article filled will startling facts about the adverse effects loneliness has on a lifespan. After reading the article, I took an inventory of myself and derived this: I should be proud I stopped smoking and working on my weight. Praise the positive–Right? The negative is my feeling extremely lonely. Brick by brick, my mental illness built a wall of solitude. Who is willing to admit they are lonely? I had a multitude of friends. I went out almost every night. I was gregarious. Everything slowly began to change towards the end of 2015. In a matter of months, I went from a beaming newlywed to a being who could barely leave his home. Consequently, my defense mechanisms were to isolate myself by pushing people away. I started working less and furthermore made a home for myself on my living room's couch. Another part of the wall was built. When my husband was home, I tried to keep it together. I failed miserably. My spouse knew something was wrong, but like myself he was hoping it would run its course. It didn't, it worsens. On a snowy, cold, March afternoon, he had myself get dressed and into a cab. We headed downtown and ended up in a waiting room of a psychiatrist office. I remember being so scared. I had this unrealistic fear that being there meant that the next step would be a psych ward. I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and severe depression, and later Bipolar disorder. Here I was 40, seeing a psychiatrist for the first time, and weekly therapy. I was ashamed and convinced this would all be over in a couple of months. But, this isn't Hollywood, where all is solved on a few visits on a therapist Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Did you know the physical effects of loneliness are comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day? Or that loneliness raises your chance of death by 26%. Throughout history we've known loneliness is harmful. Emily Dickenson called loneliness, "The horror not to be surveyed." In the beginning of the Bible, it says, "It is not good for the man to be alone." And yet, in our western society we constantly seek after individualism. Our society glorifies going it alone. In a survey done by the PEW research center, parents ranked independence as more important that empathy, tolerance, and persistence. The drive to go it alone is deeply rooted in our culture and we're seeing the effects of what we've sown. Mental illness is on the rise. One in four women between 16 and 24 have harmed themselves, another 26% of these women are also affected by anxiety, depression, phobias or OCD. Depression and loneliness are at an all–time high. In the Facebook era we seem to have forgotten the value of community. Loneliness is especially dangerous for leaders. In The Prince, the world Machiavelli lays out for a leader is a lonely one. His "better to be feared than loved" principle is an idea that stifles community and isolates a leader. The story of Esther, however, proposes a different view ofleadership, one in which community is of high value. While Esther's courage was heroic, it would not have been possible without the support of her community, specifically Mortdecai. Through Esther, we Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Great Gatsby Loneliness Essay In the book The Great Gatsby, almost all the characters deal with loneliness in their lives at some point or another. Jay Gatsby started his life lonely, lived his life lonely and died lonely. "He had never really accepted...his parents." (pg.99). At a young age he began his journey to make something out of himself. He never got along with his parents so he left the house and started to make money so he could win Daisy back. He lived by himself and was involved in illegal activities such as bootlegging. In the middle of his life, he lived by himself in a beautiful house and dreamed everyday of Daisy. He lived each day dreaming of the day he was going to rekindle what he had with Daisy.Jay Gatsby faced many consequences...show more content... At his parties he never met anyone and never tried to form any friendships. He was very "self–centered" in the way that he only cared about his dreams of meeting Daisy. His "self–centeredness" did lead him to a very lonely life. He made decisions to live for Daisy and only Daisy. Gatsby did become friends with Nick but in a way, he only used Nick as a way of getting closer to Daisy. I'm sure he cared about Nick and was a true friend but he might have only become friends at first with him because he knew Daisy. Gatsby pretty much only cared and about his dreams and because of it his life was really lonely and not fun at all. At the end of the book Jay Gatsby paid for his consequences for living all his life with one dream. He did get close with Daisy but because he did he had his life taken away from him. He was murdered because Daisy was too conceded to admit to her mistake of hitting Wilson's wife Myrtle. Gatsby paid for her mistakes. If Gatsby had not become close with Daisy, Tom would never have hated him so much. "I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that's the idea you can count me out" (pg.137). Tom did not like the idea one bit, that Daisy was getting closer and closer with Gatsby. If Gatsby had stayed away from Daisy, Tom would have never hated him and probably wouldn't have told Wilson that it was Gatsby's car that hit Myrtle. • 12. Definition Of Loneliness Essay Loneliness can be defined in so many ways. The plain, colorless, and parched meaning that sits unread in the dictionary doesn't give it any true value. The one definition that I feel truly defines loneliness is the following quote by Daniel Gillard. "Loneliness can be a feeling of shame for not being a good enough person to be something other than lonely, and being too ashamed to be capable of ending the feeling of loneliness." There are many different types of loneliness. It does different things to us. This story isn't about what loneliness is, it's about what it truly means, how it affects people, and how difficult it is to overcome. This is the story of the essence of loneliness. Today started out normal enough. I woke up at 5 am, got dressed,...show more content... Can you show me?". Hmm. Interesting. Wonder why he's acting all shy now. A minute ago he was basically hailing a cab in New York. I smirked to myself. "Yeah, what room is it?", I asked. "Uhh, room...508" "Come on, it's right over here." He walked silently behind me. The 500 building was completely empty. Those were the old rooms. I assumed he was going to Ms. Smith the guidance counselor. She usually requests students to meet her there rather than her office. Her reasoning for that was because the office staffs' auras interrupt and conflict with her Feng shui. "What's that over there?", the boy asked while pointing towards the opposite hallway. "Just a bunch of empty rooms over there. Not really anything to look at." He asked if we could walk down the hallway anyways. I just shrugged my shoulders in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Loneliness And Emotional Intelligence Paper Living on campus during the four years of my undergraduate work afforded the invaluable chance to become an invaluable member of a diverse community. This was further enhanced by my involvement in numerous clubs and organizations, which served to greatly expand my social network. Taking full advantage of the on campus living experience introduced some pretty amazing friendships. After graduating fromuniversity, I relocated from Maine to Colorado and found it a convoluted endeavor to befriend people. Emotional intelligence "refers to our ability to effectively and correctly process emotional information to solve personal and interpersonal problems" (Zysberg, 2012, p. 38). By the same token, it would make sense that our subjective interpretation of loneliness is inextricably linked to our managing relationships with others and ourselves. Therefore, the research question is: is there an association between loneliness and emotional intelligence? The experiment involved 134 (106 female, 28 male) undergraduate psychology students from colleges in northern Israel, which measured the variables of loneliness, emotional intelligence and its correlates, life satisfaction and meaning of life. Zysberg (2014) explains that "they [participants] filled out...questionnaires and took computer–based AVEI (Audio–Visual test of Emotional Intelligence) in a large computer lab in groups of 5–10" (p. 41). Results of the study indicated that there was a strong relationship between loneliness and emotional intelligence, with the latter allowing a better understanding of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

When the word loneliness is heard, it is assumed to be taken negatively as the definition describes. The oxford definition of loneliness states:Sadness because one has no friends or company ("Loneliness"). Loneliness does not have to illustrate the image of someone in a dark corner, feeling depressed. In medieval times the word "alone" was referred to a sense of completeness in one's own being (Cooper). Balancing time for yourself and friends is not challenging when your friends understand. As much as humans are social beings, we also require time to discover ourselves. Douglas Coupland once said, "Remember the time you feel lonely is the time you most need to be by yourself. Life's cruelest irony" (Martin). The benefits gained from discovering yourself could be to have the ability to help your friends discover themselves. Knowledge would keep passing along and would make for a more independent society. One of the greatest pleasures that come from being away from all of the "noise" is having the ability to invest time where you want to invest. Each and every individual can be unique, what truly sets someone apart is the time spent carving the stone to shape one's life. Instead of following the herd of sheep, break away and pursue your own dreams! Live life with no regrets and do everything you desire. • 16. Loneliness The Novel 'Of Mice and Men' was set in the 1930s in Soledad and written by John Steinbeck. The theme of loneliness is presented to the reader when we first open the book as the word Soledad means alone. In the 1930s there was a lot of discrimination and intolerance of minorities and all the characters I am going to mention are discriminated against at some point in the book. Section four however is very significant as this section epitomises the theme of loneliness through the presentation of the characters. In my essay I am going to focus on three characters who all convey a sense of loneliness, Crooks, Candy and Curley's wife. When the reader is first introduced to Crooks we are told that he is black, a cripple and doesn't live with the other men in the bunk house. He is an outcast as "There wasn't...show more content... We also find out that in section four that she had an American dream that didn't come true. The fact that she wanted to be in a job where everyone knew her name is quite ironic as Steinbeck never tells us her name she is only ever Curley's wife as if this is all she is now that she didn't have her American Dream as she just belongs to Curley who doesn't seem to let her talk to any of the men and the quote ''Think I don't like to talk to somebody ever' once in a while'' really expresses her loneliness by the fact that she thinks all these men are below her but can't stand the thought of being alone. She also tries to make all the men feel as if they are below her by saying 'they left all the weak ones here'. However even though she calls them 'weak' she still wants to spend time with them because she is an outcast as well as the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Loneliness Essay To be lonely is an easy thing, being alone is another matter entirely. To understand this, first one must understand the difference between loneliness and being alone. To be alone means that your are not in the company of anyone else. You are one. But loneliness can happen anytime, anywhere. You can be lonely in a crowd, lonely with friends, lonely with family. You can even be lonely while with loved ones. For feeling lonely, is in essence a feeling of being alone. As thought you were one and you feel as though you will always be that way. Loneliness can be one of the most destructive feelings humans are capable of feeling. For loneliness can lead to depression, suicide, and even to raging out and hurting friends and/or...show more content... Generally almost all loneliness can be traced back to low or below "average" self–esteem. Chronically lonely people will usually have low opinions of themselves. They may think of themselves as unintelligent, unattractive, broken, unwanted, not worthy of good things, no good, unable to do anything right, and/or socially isolated. Unlike many other emotionally hurting people, the chronically lonely usually know what is wrong, but like many others they don't believe they can do anything to fix it, or, circling back to the low self–esteem, they may also believe they are not worth of happiness. It takes the strong support of a good friend(s) or other loved one(s) to help the lonely conquer their feelings. Simply trying to counteract the low self–esteem verbally will not do it, though, for in their down state, they will see the person as just trying to be nice or spare their feelings. The lonely must be shown in more subtle, yet clear ways that they are not the useless person they perceive themselves to be. For example, with a person who feels particularly unloved and unwanted, someone close to them should try to take a little extra time to spend with that person and try to set aside a little extra time to talk to the person. Nothing special needs to be said or done, simply spending time, willing and without having been asked, allows the lonely one to see that they are loved. That they are worthy of being associated with and that there are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Definition Essay On Loneliness Loneliness As people get older, their social circles begin to shrink. Their worlds become smaller. When they feel the impossibility of establishing contact with others, they know the thing they fear strongly comes. It is loneliness. So, what exactly is loneliness? A narrow definition suggests that it is an unpleasant feeling when being alone. The definition of alone is "having no one else present." It is a state of being in which a person is by himself, and...show more content... On the physical side, loneliness can cause seniors to engage in unhealthy behaviors. For example, some seniors turn to alcohol to escape the feeling of loneliness or to help ease the pain of grief. Some feel empty, and excess food becomes the way to fill that emptiness. Others spend more time indoors and avoid physical activities. This lack of exercise can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other issues. On the mental side, loneliness can have major effects as well. For example, according to a study published in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & Psychiatry, older adults who suffer from loneliness have a 64% greater risk of dementia. Dementia, a general term for loss of memory and other mental abilities, is one of the leading causes of death for older people. Another effect of loneliness is depression, a serious mood disorder with suicide as a possible outcome. Lonely seniors who have been sad for a long time are at a high risk of depression. As can be seen, feeling loneliness hurts, and it hurts even more when people don't have anyone to share it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
