B.J. Habibie was born on June 25, 1936 in Parepare, South Sulawesi to Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie and R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo. He was the third president of Indonesia from 1998 to 1999. Habibie received his engineering degree from Germany in 1960 and remained there as a research assistant, developing theories on thermodynamics, construction, and aerodynamics. He returned to Indonesia in 1974 at Suharto's request to help develop the country. Habibie became vice president in March 1998 and assumed the presidency in May 1998 after Suharto resigned amid economic and political crisis.
