- Let’s begin with the easiest story to tell … the story of my work life… the 20 productive years during which I have given back more to the world than I took from it. I have spent the 17 years helping huge telecom and TV companies and 3 years helping tiny mom and pop shops and small businesses. AT Cisco, NDS and Intuit. First… Cisco. I made huge telecom routers. Much like the Redback routers that Ericsson acquired. I was Cisco’s first ever product manager in India. Krishna who hired me and my mentor said this to me … ‘being the first can cut both ways…. Do just about well and you will bomb any hopes of growing the PM community. rock this role awesomely well, and u will be a director of a growing team in no time. I must have rocked that role! However… just as I was about to make director, Krishna advised … why don’t you try your hand at an acquisition integration ? So off I went to NDS and the television industry… made set top boxes and video entertainment application. I wanted to change the world of video entertainment by creating customizable mobile app ‘platforms’, using which like of Tata Sky, Videocon, Hathway, could compete with the threat of Netflix, Prime Video and other over-the-top (OTT) apps. I miserably failed in that role, and in 3 years the whole division was hived and sold at a garage sale price… and I was fired . Out of job and out of hope during 2017 … I struggled to find a PM leader role, but I did find and internalize three critical life skills… humility, optimism and … u guessed it … storytelling. even got a dilploma in storytelling … *(yes there is such a thing)* So now I help tiny small mom-and-pop shops… Intuit is a company obsessed with small-businesses, accounting and taxes. And I run the $1B fintech product line of our QuickBooks product. Helping the underdogs I tell you is so much more gratifying… like handing the rock to David to hit Goliath. And btw, I am talking to Krishna now to see if he can come join Intuit now
- It’s easy to see why in advertisements, sales and marketing a story makes sense to promote
- 1846 Ignaz Sammelweis and John Snow … and 1832…. . Sewage infrastructure was still a thing of the future and most houses had a cesspool of human waste in their basement. However, Snow believed that it wasn't the poisonous air but some kind of waterborne disease. He published a paper in 1849 called 'On the Mode of Communication of Cholera', but no one listened to him. The public health authorities largely ignored what he had to say. He had made the case in a number of papers and done a number of studies, but nothing had really stuck. Then on 28 August 1854, a five-year-old girl, referred to as Baby Lewis in subsequent documents, somehow contracted cholera at 40 Broad Street in Soho. The outbreak that followed was deadly. Literally 10 per cent of the neighbourhood died in seven days. The casualty figure would have been much higher had the people in the surrounding area not fled after the initial outbreak. Snow lived nearby and was convinced that such a concentrated outbreak pointed to a single point source. In the now famous map reproduced on the next page, Snow, working with a local priest-Reverend Henry Whitehead-plotted the location of deaths and the location of hand pumps used to draw water in the area. Deaths were marked by dashes and the pumps with a cross. When he looked at the annotated map, he observed that cholera occurred almost entirely among those who lived near and drank water from the Broad Street pump. The irony was that this was a preferred pump in the neighbourhood. In his subsequent research paper, Snow wrote: "There were only ten deaths in houses situated decidedly nearer to another street-pump. In five of these cases, the families of the deceased persons informed him that they always went to the pump on Broad Street, as they preferred its water to that of the pumps which were nearer. In three other cases, the deceased were children who went to school near the pump on Broad Street ... He then had the handle of the contaminated pump removed, ending the neighbourhood epidemic. Though the authorities promptly reinstalled the handle as soon as the outbreak died down, due to Snow's map and both his and Whitehead's continuous evangelizing, the authorities started coming around. By 1866, when the next big cholera outbreak happened in London, the authorities had been convinced by the story problem.³ and the map that the water was a problem… Through storytelling and data visualization, Snow achieved, Sommelweis couldn't. 185
- George Alfred Lohmann was born on 2 June 1865. He played first-class cricket in Surrey in 1884. In that year his place in the team was because of his promising batting. He bowled very little. It was the following year that was sensational. His haul of 142 first-class wickets made him the highest wicket taker that year. This got him into the English test side in 1886. While he had a dismal beginning taking just 1 wicket in the first test at Old Trafford and none in the second test in The Oval, he repaid the selectors faith by taking 12 wickets for 104 giving England what was one of the most decisive wins in the Ashes Series. The next few years were glorious, even getting him the Wisden Cricketer of the Year award in 1889. However, he contracted tuberculosis in 1892. A partial recovery saw him back in first-class cricket in 1895. In 1896, he was virtually unplayable. In three tests played on matting wickets he took 35 wickets for just 5.8 runs each. His deteriorating health and a pay dispute where he demanded double the standard rate saw him retire from test cricket in 1897. He died in 1901 aged only thirty-six. Now that is a story. A story I would have never unearthed if I hadn't seen this analysis and visualization.

- Six years ago, our company, NDS, realized that having a separate ‘dev testing team’ does not align with being Agile. It was the ‘State of Company’ tour of October 2015 when our CEO, announced ‘Left Shift’. Sanjay, our country dev head, and Swetha our test head, began our complete transformation to DevOps. 500 dev test engineers were retrained as developers, in python / silk automation, and in ML programming, or even full-stack… web or native C/C++. 1 year into the program, Sanjay had re-grouped all but 50 testers in new awesome roles. In 12 months, we reached that critical decision point… Could we downsize the 50? it formed a very small % of our total workforce. It was a tough choice but we had that ‘choice’… I remember our site-wide meeting on the terrace where Sanjay made a commitment to finding every last engg a role if he had to. He called on Product team, project team, analyst and data teams to come forward and help. In the next 6 months,
