Stems serve as conduits that carry water, minerals, and sugars between roots and leaves while also providing structural support. They contain meristems that generate new living tissue annually to support buds, leaves, flowers, and fruits. Stems come in different forms depending on the plant's age and characteristics, such as shoots, twigs, branches, trunks, and vines.

 Young green stem also performs a minor role
in the production of food through
photosynthesis.
