Editor's Notes

  • #3 In the Philippines, the issue of youth unemployment continues to hinder significant economic progress. As of July 2020, approximately 4.6 million Filipinos aged 15–24 were unemployed, a stark increase of 2.1 million from the previous year. This surge can largely be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on both the education and employment sectors, disrupting students' transition into the workforce.
  • #4 To address this challenge, the Filipino Government's Department of Education (DepEd), in collaboration with The Asia Foundation's Coalitions for Change (CFC) and various stakeholders, has been implementing the Work Immersion Program since 2017. This initiative targets senior high school students aged 15–18, offering them hands-on work experience as a prerequisite for graduation. Participating students, regardless of their educational institution, undergo work simulation in their chosen field to enhance their knowledge, skills, and employability. The program includes mentorship by industry professionals for 80–320 hours over two years, ensuring a smooth transition from school to work.
  • #5  Despite its positive impact, the program faces challenges, such as inconsistencies in workplace effectiveness and variations in tasks assigned to students across different fields. Adjustments and additional years of implementation may be necessary to enhance its coherence and effectiveness. Since its inception, the Work Immersion Program has benefited over 390,000 senior high school students, with 60% subsequently finding employment. The program has achieved notable success, evidenced by high certification passing rates and graduates entering the workforce immediately after graduation. Moving forward, DepEd aims to, and. This initiative demonstrates how collaboration between governments, industries, and educational institutions can effectively address youth unemployment and contribute to economic development. The program's adaptability to changing job markets underscores its importance in.
  • #7 Results achieved: Since its operation in the school year 2017—2018, over 390,000 senior high school students have undergone the Work Immersion Program, with 60 per cent subsequently becoming employed. To date, the Program has been achieving good results, for instance, with a high passing rate in National Certification for tourism-related specializations and graduates joining the workforce right after graduation.
  • #8 Replicability: The Work Immersion initiative demonstrates how national and local governments and industries can better coordinate and learn from each other through close collaboration in designing curricula and learning materials that will help senior high school graduates compete in high-growth, high-value and high-employment sectors. DepEd intent to pay close attention to changing job markets and provide relevant training and work experience programmes shows the importance of adjusting to industry expectations and better preparing youth for the world of work.
