Welcome to Startup Weekend
Copenhagen!
No talk, all action. 4 simple and powerful words, for the next 54 hours you will get encouraged to do so.
Impress yourself with your accomplishment during this weekend. Grow and develop the mindset. Work
smart and hard for this weekend, commit yourself to the idea and team.
Together Jay and Aleks have organised Startup Weekend since 2014 in Copenhagen, building on top of the
movement which has been in Copenhagen since 2010.
The concept is the same, but people, ideas, topic and execution is constantly changing. Two weekends are
never the same, both as an attendees and an organiser you learn something new each time.
November is a busy month for Startup Weekends around the world, because every year Global Entre-
preneurship Week takes place. In the weekends of 11-13th and 18-20th of November 2016, more than
15.000 entrepreneurs will come together for over 200 Startup Weekend events worldwide.
Whether you want to start the new Unity or build something like The Eye Tribe, it all starts in someone’s
mind. Startup Weekend brings together those types of people who have visions, dreams and want to
inspire the future.
Thank you to all the past and present dedicated organisers, wonderful partners and amazing attendees
through the many years here in Copenhagen. Together we are creating the community for entrepreneur-
ship to flourish.
Enjoy the weekend!

Challenge
1. Increasing automation and remote control of our ships, ports, rigs, and platforms increases the
need to control interfaces and display of information. How can AR and VR be used as an interface to
control large machines in the middle of the ocean?
2. Maintenance means downtime, and downtime is costly, but it’s also expensive and a safety risk to
send specialists out to sea by ship or helicopter. How can we get the best eyes and brains on our
assets without putting bodies out there?
3. We want less people exposed to dangerous places. How can AR and VR enable training both on-
shore and offshore, on-demand, if or when it becomes relevant?
4. Data is heavy. How can we use AR and VR to evolve t he Maersk business knowing that connectivity
offshore is not reliable but to use AR and VR we need to transfer data?
5. Data is complicated. How can AR and VR help us visualize data in a new way to make better deci-
sions?

Maersk is the largest container shipping company in the world. With hundreds of ships and tens of thou-
sands of containers moving around everyday we have equipment, people, and countries sailing with us
in very extreme environments. To do this, we need to always look at how to be smarter in running our
business.

Attention startups - my best advice to get
your name out fast and cheap!
Small newly started ventures can get very far - even on small budgets. The problem I often see, is that many
want to be everywhere and on all channels. I am convinced that if you start out LEAN and focus on one or
two channels and tools, you can get really far! It is often a waste of valuable time and scarce resources to be
everywhere and all over at once.
Effective digital marketing should always be generated by the right mix of tools and channels, men not be-
fore you have the time and funds to do it a 100%. Here are my 5 best advice, that you as a startup, can use
to effectively promote yourself. The keywords are: Focus, cheap and simplicity!
1. Focus on excellence on the right channels and cut away the rest
–– Your 5 followers twitter does not make a difference.
2. Content-based marketing at the right place, the right time to the right audience
–– A single viral hit can be your cheap way to the stars!
3. Chase that WOM – preferably from influencers
–– 92% of consumers thrust recommendations from family and friends!
4. Give your product a viral dimension
–– The “wow-factor” has worked for many cool products!
5. Experiment, test and cut or scale
–– The days of thorough market research are over. Get your campaign going, collect feedback and
choose the solution that generated the best results.

Teams are judged according to the following 3 criteria
(weighted equally)
1. Business Model
–– How does the team plan on making this a successful business? Have they thought about (either
solved or identified problems) competition, how to scale, acquiring customers, their revenue
model e tc?
2. Customer Validation
–– Are teams building something that people actually want? How well does the team understand
their customer and their customer’s needs. Did the team get out and talk to customers? What is
the value proposition to customers?
3. Execution & Design
–– Have they established a “Minimal Viable Product” for the weekend (software, hardware, etc.)?
*Note: an MVP is the minimum set of features to be able to start collecting data. Does it deliver
a compelling and captivating user experience? Were they able to demo something functional?
