The St. Joe Drive bridge in Park Hills, MO was originally built in 1920 but became obsolete. In 2017, the St. Francois County Special Road District 2 demolished the old bridge and replaced it with a new bridge spanning the UPRR line. Excavation for the new bridge's footings revealed weakened rock from the original railroad cut, requiring contractors to dig six feet deeper than planned to install a sub-footing on solid rock. The new bridge was designed by BFA Engineers and constructed by Kozeny Wagner and United Ironworkers.

Portage Escarpment Deep History
The presentation lays a framework for understanding the evolution of the Portage Escarpment in the Cleveland area. On Lake Erie's south shore, the Portage Escarpment is the terrain transition between North America's Appalachian Highland and Central Lowland provinces. Lake Erie and its lake plain lie in the lowland province. Cleveland's East Side Heights lies on the escarpment. Portage, Summit, and Medina counties lie in the highland province.
Euclid Creek window
Our window into escarpment evolution is the stream-cut bedrock sequence at the Quarry Picnic Area of the Euclid Creek Reservation in South Euclid, Ohio. The sequence features two of the escarpment's three sandstone formations: the Berea Sandstone and, below, the Euclid bluestone (Bedford Formation).
Deep History
To comprehend the relationship between natural and anthropogenic terrain evolutions, the 'deep history' perspective is introduced. Deep history views urban landscapes as the weave of natural and cultural forces. The deep history perspectives of Daniel Lord Smail, David Christian, Edward O. Wilson and the Eco-Modernists are introduced.
Event Cycles
The deep history perspective views landscape evolution as a series of two-phased cycles. In deposition phase, landscape is built up as natural sediment and/or anthropogenic transformation. In erosion phase, landscape is torn down with stream cutting and/or urban abandonment.
Bedrock Deposition
The Euclid bluestone and Berea Sandstone were deposited ~350 Ma in a shallow sea fronting the rising Appalachian Mountains to the east. The sandstones typify deposits in a fold belt foreland basin. An analog can be found in the Persian Gulf, in the foreland basin fronting the Zagros Mountains fold belt in Iran and Iraq.
Glacial Retreat and Stream Formation
In terms of natural process, the current Portage Escarpment landscape took shape as the last glacier retreated northward and meltwater cut deep ravines into the local bedrock sequence. By about 16 ka, small streams began flowing southward to the Chagrin and Cuyahoga Rivers. After 16 ka, newer small streams, including Euclid Creek began flowing northward from current Shaker Heights.
Anthropogenic Landscapes
As we see evidence for Portage Escarpment terrain evolution at Euclid Creek, the human transformations loom large. The area was extensively quarried during the nineteenth century. Moreover, as urban development has paved much of the Euclid Creek watershed, the stream is subject to flood events which can quickly change the local stream bed. Many historic Metroparks infrastructure components are highly eroded.

Retrofit Facility DP0625 West Potomac High School

The Downeast Sunrise Trail in Maine is the most spectacular section of the East Coast Greenway. Construction and improvements were ongoing in 2010, including bridge work, drainage systems, and establishing the trail surface. The trail officially opened on September 21, 2010 after over a decade of advocacy and work to develop it.
Retrofit Facility DP0625 West Potomac High School
The West Potomac High School pond retrofit project was completed in October 2017. The project involved regrading the pond to lengthen the flow path and maximize storage volume. Two curb inlets were installed to capture runoff, and the existing riser structure was replaced. Improvements are expected to increase water residence time and provide enhanced water quality benefits by reducing nitrogen by 76.30 lbs/yr, phosphorus by 13.19 lbs/yr, and suspended solids by 12,416.43 lbs/yr. The project team included members from Fairfax County stormwater planning and construction divisions along with a design consultant.

A 2005 inspection found partial failure of the dam's apron, local scour, and sediment abrasion damaging the concrete over time. Conditions around dams change with urbanization, farming, and vegetation growth requiring periodic inspections and testing to assess aging infrastructure and ensure structural integrity.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

- 1. St. Joe Dr. Bridge Project St. Francois County Special Road District 2 replaces a bridge spanning UPRR line in Park Hills, MO
- 2. Out with the old! The St. Joe Drive bridge, originally built in 1920, served St. Francois County until becoming part of U.S. Route 67. After U.S. Route 67 was replaced by the four lane highway to the east in 1964, St. Joe Drive became an arterial part of the local road system serving the city of Esther and St. Francois County. Later, St. Joe Drive bridge became partly incorporated into the city of Park Hills upon consolidation of the cities in 1994. The narrow, obsolete structure was demolished for replacement by the St. Francois County Special Road District 2 in 2017.
