The temperature record of the Hong Kong Observatory Headquarters (HKOHQ) at Tsim Sha Tsui has become available since 1885. Hong Kong was not spared from the effect of global warming, also because of the high density urban development, the temperature at the HKOHQ has risen 1.2°C in the last century. This is considerably greater than the global rate for the same period. The average temperature rising rate at the HKOHQ after the World War II (1947-2006) was 0.17°C per decade. The rising rate has increased rapidly in the recent 10 years or so (1989-2006) which doubles the rate for the entire post-War period.
By the end of this century, the number of cold days (with daily minimum temperature of 12°C or below) will drop from the 1961-1990 mean of 21 days per year to less than 1 day per year, i.e. no more cold winter. The number of very hot days in summer (with daily maximum temperature of 33°C or above) will double, rising from the 1961-1990 mean of 11 days per year to 24 days per year.
