Societal and Familial Conflict In
           Kaffir Boy
By: Sree Lingam and Katy Li
Summary

Since early childhood, Mark’s life is characterized by poverty,
violence, and frequent raids from police. The level of
dilapidation that occurs can be attributed the social fetters that
hold them down. The system of apartheid was a social structure
that restrained the blacks of South Africa from rising up and
achieving their goals and desires. Apart from societal conflicts,
familial dilemmas surface from differences in mindsets, as well as
belief.
Passage #1

“It was echoed by all black people I had come across. There
were two worlds as far as we were concerned, separated
absolutely in every sense. But somehow, in my knowing about
these two worlds, it had never occurred to me that though the
two were as different as night and day, as separate as east and
west, they had everything to do with each other; that one could
not be without the other, and that their dependency was that of
master and slave” (Mathabane 94).
Passage #2

“Don’t lecture me, you hear, women, don’t lecture me!” he fumed. “I’m the
man of this house. I wear the pants, not you! Watch your tongue or I’ll cut it
out! I’ll cut it out!” - he shook a meatless chicken foot at my mother - “This
bloody business of telling me, your husband and lord, how to run this house
has to stop! Right at this moment, or you’ll why I’m called Mathabane.” He
stamped a fist at the table; the table wobbled. Sinking back into his chair, he
went on, blisteringly, “You seem to forget that I bought you! I own you. Your
duty is to look after my children, cook for me, and do what I say.” (Mathabane
176).
Passage #3

“Granny had serious doubts about being to see them go and any
further, for the cost of black education had risen dramatically,
and her earnings from gardening had not. There was even talk
that Aunty Bushy would have to leave school upon completing
Standard 6, and look for a factory job, so she could help pay for
Uncle Piet’s schooling. (Mathabane 182)
Passage #4

We broke out laughing, a nervous laughter, our eyes darting
about to see if we were being watched. In a country where the
writing of political slogans on walls was considered a serious
crime, talking about political matters was tantamount to treason,
punishable by hanging, if you were black. (Mathabane 229)
