Distributed tracing is used to analyze performance and error cases in service oriented architectures. The Observability team at Airbnb recently created Upshot, a data pipeline that uses Flink to analyze over 40 million trace events per minute. Summaries of the resulting data are sent to Druid, Datadog, and other downstream datastores. This talk will focus on how we use Flink and how we analyzed and addressed scaling issues we encountered while building Upshot.
Last year we (TouK) introduced Flink in one of the biggest polish telcoms in the domain of real time marketing and fraud detection. One of the most significant problems in adoption was lack of programming skills at our client - the users were supposed to be analytics/business people. Therefore, we developed a custom platform - TouK Nussknacker - which allows users to design processes with GUI by drawing diagrams. Our project is going to be open-sourced soon - this will happen before Flink Forward. We believe it can make stream processing with Flink more accessible in many use cases, especially in companies that don't have their own development teams. During the talk I’m going to describe architecture of our platform, why we made certain design decisions and about our future plans. I’ll also describe our experiences - when being able to use GUI is great and when it’s better to develop jobs as normal code. If time permits I’ll also show a quick demo of our solution.
In this talk, we describe the design and implementation of the Python Streaming API support that has been submitted for inclusion in mainline Flink. Python is one of the most popular programming languages for data analysis. Its readability emphasizes development productivity and as a scripting language, it does not require a compilation nor complex development environment setup. Flink already has support for Python APIs for batch programming and unfortunately, the mechanism used to support batch programs (i.e., DataSet APIs) do does not work for Streaming API. We describe the limitations with the batch implementation and provide insights into how we solved this using Jython. We will walk through some of the examples programs using the new Python API and compare programmability and performance with the Java and Scala streaming APIs.

In a production environment, however, the collection of metrics to automatically detect and act on issues in such a cluster is essential. Prometheus was created to meet such needs: highly dynamic scheduling, automatic service discovery, and reliable operations.

The Machine Learning (ML) library for Flink is a new effort to bring scalable ML tools to the Flink community in order to make Flink a premier platform for ML. This effort covers a wide area of ML related activities including data analysis, model training and model serving. In this talk we will cover approaches to using Flink for model serving. We will present a framework and actual code for serving and updating models in real time. Although presented examples cover only two model types - Tensorflow and PMML, the framework is applicable for any type of externalizable models. We will also show how this implementation fits into overall ML learning implementation and demonstrate integration with SparkML and Tensorflow/Keras and specifically show how models can be exported from these systems. This initial implementation can be further enhanced to support additional model representations, for example PFA and introduction of model serving specific semantics into Flink framework.

This case study describes how we leveraged serverless technology and the AWS serverless application model (SAM) to support the needs of virtual training classes for a major US Federal agency. Our firm was excited to be selected as the main training partner to help a major US Federal government agency roll out Agile and DevOps processes across an organization comprising more than 1500 people. And then the pandemic hit—and what was to have been a series of in-person classes turned 100% virtual! We created a set of fully populated docker images containing all of the test data, plugins, and scenarios required for the student exercises. For our initial implementation, we simply pre-loaded our docker images into elastic beanstalk and then replicated them as many times as needed to provide the necessary number of instances for a given class. While this worked out fine at first, we found a number of shortcomings as we scaled up to more students and more classes. Eventually we came up with a much easier solution using serverless technology: we stood up a single page application that could kickoff tasks using AWS step functions to run docker images in elastic container service, all running under AWS Fargate. This application is a perfect fit for serverless technology and describing our evolution to serverless and SAM may help you gain insights into how these technologies may be beneficial in your situation.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
