We were delighted to welcome author,
essayist and international course
adviser at Campion, Mary Eberstadt,
in October.
Despite her connection to the college,
this was her first visit to the campus,
where she met students and gave a
private lecture on her life and work,
including a Q&A.
Following this, Mary gave a public
lecture on her book, How the West
Really Lost God, in a joint event hosted
by Campion’s Centre for the Study of
the Western Tradition (CSWT) and the
Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation
in Sydney’s CBD.
Tailoring her talk for an Australian
audience, she referred to the latest
national census, which showed a drastic
drop in the number of Australians
identifying as Christian, and an increase
in those reporting ‘no religion’.
“Now, the fact of Western religious
decline is nothing new; even so,
judging by the 2021 Australian Census,
secularisation is now galloping at a pace
that even the most prescient observers
might not have foreseen,” she said.
She went on to examine several
proposed theories about why Christian
devotion in the West has been in decline
for the past 50 or so years, concluding
that it derives from, and mirrors,
thebreakdown of the family unit –
especially since the sexual revolution of
the 1960s.
“Western Christianity is in decline for
reasons that have nothing whatever
to do with the truth value of religious
belief,” she said. “It is not prosperity
that makes God harder to see, it’s not
science; it’s the increasing absence of
familial figures, who serve to sharpen
the human vision of the divine.”
Mary argued that the evidence for the
conclusions she came to in her book
have become even stronger in the years
since it was published in 2014.
The talk was insightful and engaging,
and ended on a hopeful note, pointing
to the negativity and nihilism that
secularism has wrought on society, in
direct contrast to the inspiring message
that faith brings, which is already
bringing new converts into the Church.
Following the talk, Campion president
Paul Morrissey hosted a Q&Asession
with Mary and the audience. The
evening ended with a private dinner
with Mary and a gathering of friends
and supporters of Campion.

A Gift for the Future
Page 3 | Campion’s Brag | Michaelmas Term 2022 | www.campion.edu.au
While support for the college can take a variety of forms, a ‘Gift for the Future’is one of
the most powerful ways you can help secure the future of Campion College.
By including a gift to the Campion Foundation* in your Will, you can help support
college activities, projects, residential life and student needs long into the future.
You may choose to gift a specific amount, a percentage of your estate or the residue
of your estate after providing for family.
A gift in support of Campion College is not an alternative to looking after your
family; it is an integral part of safeguarding their future. By joining hands with
the college, you contribute to the development of virtuous and compassionate
Campion graduates. These graduates will become educators, healthcare workers,
lawyers, politicians, evangelists and business professionals… the very people who
will ensure the wellbeing of those you love for years to come.
Agift in your will really is a ‘Gift for the Future’. You can truly make a difference to
the lives of young people and through them, in the lives of those you love.

The Artist’s Interpretation
One skylight, thirty-five panels:
a kaleidoscope of
symbol-saturated colour.
A simple proposition was made by
Campion College to artist and
religious, Sr Josephine Marie of the
Sisters of Mary Morning Star in
August 2021: design a stained glass
skylight for the new library, thus
reducing the glare of the harsh
Australian sun on students
studying below.
Sr Josephine immediately got to
work on what she thought would
be only a few weeks’ work – which
quickly developed into a major year-
long project as she dialogued with
Campion through various issues and
sought to realise the many desires
expressed.
What resulted is something unique:
a series of panels of specific saints
surrounding two double-panels of
the Virgin and Child and Christ the
King, seated on His throne. Spoken
in the language of traditional stained
glass, yet realised with modern
means, the ancient and the new
come together in this veil of visual
storytelling, bathing viewers in the
light of faith and wisdom as they
engage – book in hand – in their
own personal search.
The skylight will be displayed in
the ceiling of the new Academic
Centre library. In preparation for its
instalment, Campion has created a
colouring book that features black-
and-white images of each panel
alongside an explanatory paragraph
by Sr Josephine. If you are interested

ROBYNE FERRI Class of 2018
When I first heard about Campion College, I felt my heart leap!
Due to a strong, consistent desire to work in evangelisation, I
quit my job and returned to study in 2016. I can genuinely
say that Campion College was three of the best years of my
life. Since graduating in 2018, I have very successfully
worked in marketing for the largest owner of hotels and
resorts in the world.
During the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns, I felt inspired to
write a book - currently being edited by Rev Fr Richard Wallace - that has been on my
heart for many years, about my own faith journey and the miracles God has performed
in my life. I also felt inspired to create my own nascent apostolate, ‘Live Catholic
Joyful’: www.livecatholicjoyful.wixsite.com/live Recently, Our Lord has blessed
me with a role as an ‘Evangelisation and Formation Coordinator’.

Poets, academics and friends of Les Murray AO came together to remember the late
Australian poet and honour his legacy in a conference held at Campion College on
Saturday, 24 September.
‘Les Murray: Life, Poetry & Legacy’ was led by Dr Stephen McInerney, Director of
the Centre for the Study of the Western Tradition and literature lecturer at Campion.
Throughout the day, attendees heard from speakers who knew the celebrated poet,
in the first conference of its kind since Murray’s death in April, 2019.
The speeches included poetry analysis and fond remembrances, covering topics
from Murray’s poetry interpreted as “Talking Mosaics” (Dr Theodore Ell) to a
reflection on a long friendship conducted by correspondence (Dr M. G. Michael).
The event was well-received, with many attendees saying they enjoyed the chance
to honour the poet’s legacy. If you would like to join the CSWT mailing list complete

Vol. 21 No. 4 Spring 2022
Campion’s Brag is a quarterly newsletter
named in honour of the manifesto of
St. Edmund Campion’s mission of faith.
It is edited by Yvette Nehme (Director
of Development) and compiled by
Maria Teresa Gambino (Arancia Design)
on behalf of the Campion Foundation.
Just missing out on Cardinal’s Cup
Campion College faced off against eight other universities and seminaries in
the Cardinal’s Cup indoor soccer competition at the University of Sydney last
Saturday, 1 October.
Placed in a group with University of Technology Sydney and University of NSW,
Campion was victorious in the group stage after having beaten UNSW in a close
game, coming back from being 1-0 down to win 2-1. Campion next faced UTS,
beating the team comfortably 5-1.
Having emerged from the group stage Campion went down in the quarterfinals
to USYD 2-1 in a closely matched game. With one final chance to gain the only
remaining spot left in the semifinals, Campion once again took on UTS. Both
teams remained scoreless until the last ten seconds of the game, when UTS won
the ball in Campion’s half and scored a goal seconds before the full-time whistle
– knocking Campion out of the competition.
The Campion team may not have been able to walk away with the trophy, but
teammates can hold their heads high knowing they played well. Big thanks to
all the members of our team: Ambrose Doodeman, John-Paul Canavan, Joseph
Nunes, Jude Clarke, Mattias Seisdedos, Oliver van Rensburg, Simeon Casey,
Sophie Dignam, Xavier Warmbrunn and coach Samuel Butterworth.

Saturday 18 October, Campion
students come together to
perform for each other and
guests in an evening of musical
numbers, theatrical renditions
and poetry readings.
The event afforded Campion
students a chance to take a break
from their studies and either
perform or be entertained in an
intimate evening of poetry, song
and theatre.
Annual Campion Ball
Over 300 guests descended on the
Western Sydney campus on Saturday
10 September, coming from as far afield as
Western Australia, Tasmania and South
Australia, as well as closer to home.
Campion’s main building was
transformed into a medieval castle,
with ivy-covered walls, crenellated
‘towers’ and large banners flanking the
entrance, with decorations put together
in just two days by the Campion
College Student Association (CCSA).
CCSA President Genevieve Colman,
along with the other members of the
student ball planning committee, had
a daunting task ahead of them, never
having attended, let alone planned, a
Campion Ball before.
“The whole thing really looked really
magical,” Genevieve said. “It was
fantastic, and we were really pleased,
especially considering our lack of
experience.”
In opening the ball, Campion President
Paul Morrissey congratulated the
committee on putting together such a
spectacular event. “This is a night of
great joy, and I really encourage you
to enjoy yourselves and have a great
time,” Dr Morrissey said.
The ball featured some new elements
not seen before, including a ‘magic
mirror’ photo booth, a wandering
minstrel, fire-twirling and a DJ booth,
which followed the live music.
“The ball committee worked together
very well, with Abbey Pereira in
charge. Everyone had a can-do
attitude, staying up late on Friday
night getting everything done.”
Genevieve said.

  • 2. We were delighted to welcome author, essayist and international course adviser at Campion, Mary Eberstadt, in October. Despite her connection to the college, this was her first visit to the campus, where she met students and gave a private lecture on her life and work, including a Q&A. Following this, Mary gave a public lecture on her book, How the West Really Lost God, in a joint event hosted by Campion’s Centre for the Study of the Western Tradition (CSWT) and the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation in Sydney’s CBD. Tailoring her talk for an Australian audience, she referred to the latest national census, which showed a drastic drop in the number of Australians identifying as Christian, and an increase in those reporting ‘no religion’. “Now, the fact of Western religious decline is nothing new; even so, judging by the 2021 Australian Census, secularisation is now galloping at a pace that even the most prescient observers might not have foreseen,” she said. She went on to examine several proposed theories about why Christian devotion in the West has been in decline for the past 50 or so years, concluding that it derives from, and mirrors, thebreakdown of the family unit – especially since the sexual revolution of the 1960s. “Western Christianity is in decline for reasons that have nothing whatever to do with the truth value of religious belief,” she said. “It is not prosperity that makes God harder to see, it’s not science; it’s the increasing absence of familial figures, who serve to sharpen the human vision of the divine.” Mary argued that the evidence for the conclusions she came to in her book have become even stronger in the years since it was published in 2014. The talk was insightful and engaging, and ended on a hopeful note, pointing to the negativity and nihilism that secularism has wrought on society, in direct contrast to the inspiring message that faith brings, which is already bringing new converts into the Church. Following the talk, Campion president Paul Morrissey hosted a Q&Asession with Mary and the audience. The evening ended with a private dinner with Mary and a gathering of friends and supporters of Campion. • 3. A Gift for the Future Page 3 | Campion’s Brag | Michaelmas Term 2022 | www.campion.edu.au While support for the college can take a variety of forms, a ‘Gift for the Future’is one of the most powerful ways you can help secure the future of Campion College. By including a gift to the Campion Foundation* in your Will, you can help support college activities, projects, residential life and student needs long into the future. You may choose to gift a specific amount, a percentage of your estate or the residue of your estate after providing for family. A gift in support of Campion College is not an alternative to looking after your family; it is an integral part of safeguarding their future. By joining hands with the college, you contribute to the development of virtuous and compassionate Campion graduates. These graduates will become educators, healthcare workers, lawyers, politicians, evangelists and business professionals… the very people who will ensure the wellbeing of those you love for years to come. Agift in your will really is a ‘Gift for the Future’. You can truly make a difference to the lives of young people and through them, in the lives of those you love. The Artist’s Interpretation One skylight, thirty-five panels: a kaleidoscope of symbol-saturated colour. A simple proposition was made by Campion College to artist and religious, Sr Josephine Marie of the Sisters of Mary Morning Star in August 2021: design a stained glass skylight for the new library, thus reducing the glare of the harsh Australian sun on students studying below. Sr Josephine immediately got to work on what she thought would be only a few weeks’ work – which quickly developed into a major year- long project as she dialogued with Campion through various issues and sought to realise the many desires expressed. What resulted is something unique: a series of panels of specific saints surrounding two double-panels of the Virgin and Child and Christ the King, seated on His throne. Spoken in the language of traditional stained glass, yet realised with modern means, the ancient and the new come together in this veil of visual storytelling, bathing viewers in the light of faith and wisdom as they engage – book in hand – in their own personal search. The skylight will be displayed in the ceiling of the new Academic Centre library. In preparation for its instalment, Campion has created a colouring book that features black- and-white images of each panel alongside an explanatory paragraph by Sr Josephine. • 5. Page 5 | Campion’s Brag | Michaelmas Term 2022 | www.campion.edu.au Where are they now ? ROBYNE FERRI Class of 2018 When I first heard about Campion College, I felt my heart leap! Due to a strong, consistent desire to work in evangelisation, I quit my job and returned to study in 2016. I can genuinely say that Campion College was three of the best years of my life. Since graduating in 2018, I have very successfully worked in marketing for the largest owner of hotels and resorts in the world. During the 2020 and 2021 lockdowns, I felt inspired to write a book - currently being edited by Rev Fr Richard Wallace - that has been on my heart for many years, about my own faith journey and the miracles God has performed in my life. I also felt inspired to create my own nascent apostolate, ‘Live Catholic Joyful’: www.livecatholicjoyful.wixsite.com/live Recently, Our Lord has blessed me with a role as an ‘Evangelisation and Formation Coordinator’. Poets, academics and friends of Les Murray AO came together to remember the late Australian poet and honour his legacy in a conference held at Campion College on Saturday, 24 September. ‘Les Murray: Life, Poetry & Legacy’ was led by Dr Stephen McInerney, Director of the Centre for the Study of the Western Tradition and literature lecturer at Campion. Throughout the day, attendees heard from speakers who knew the celebrated poet, in the first conference of its kind since Murray’s death in April, 2019. The speeches included poetry analysis and fond remembrances, covering topics from Murray’s poetry interpreted as “Talking Mosaics” (Dr Theodore Ell) to a reflection on a long friendship conducted by correspondence (Dr M. G. Michael). The event was well-received, with many attendees saying they enjoyed the chance to honour the poet’s legacy. Page 6 | Campion’s Brag | Michaelmas Term 2022 | www.campion.edu.au Talent Night Vol. 21 No. 4 Spring 2022 Campion’s Brag is a quarterly newsletter named in honour of the manifesto of St. Edmund Campion’s mission of faith. It is edited by Yvette Nehme (Director of Development) and compiled by Maria Teresa Gambino (Arancia Design) on behalf of the Campion Foundation. Just missing out on Cardinal’s Cup Campion College faced off against eight other universities and seminaries in the Cardinal’s Cup indoor soccer competition at the University of Sydney last Saturday, 1 October. Placed in a group with University of Technology Sydney and University of NSW, Campion was victorious in the group stage after having beaten UNSW in a close game, coming back from being 1-0 down to win 2-1. Campion next faced UTS, beating the team comfortably 5-1. Having emerged from the group stage Campion went down in the quarterfinals to USYD 2-1 in a closely matched game. With one final chance to gain the only remaining spot left in the semifinals, Campion once again took on UTS. Both teams remained scoreless until the last ten seconds of the game, when UTS won the ball in Campion’s half and scored a goal seconds before the full-time whistle – knocking Campion out of the competition. The Campion team may not have been able to walk away with the trophy, but teammates can hold their heads high knowing they played well. Big thanks to all the members of our team: Ambrose Doodeman, John-Paul Canavan, Joseph Nunes, Jude Clarke, Mattias Seisdedos, Oliver van Rensburg, Simeon Casey, Sophie Dignam, Xavier Warmbrunn and coach Samuel Butterworth. Ambrose Doodeman - Campion Sports Rep Cardinal’s Cup Team Saturday 18 October, Campion students come together to perform for each other and guests in an evening of musical numbers, theatrical renditions and poetry readings. The event afforded Campion students a chance to take a break from their studies and either perform or be entertained in an intimate evening of poetry, song and theatre. Annual Campion Ball Over 300 guests descended on the Western Sydney campus on Saturday 10 September, coming from as far afield as Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia, as well as closer to home. Campion’s main building was transformed into a medieval castle, with ivy-covered walls, crenellated ‘towers’ and large banners flanking the entrance, with decorations put together in just two days by the Campion College Student Association (CCSA). CCSA President Genevieve Colman, along with the other members of the student ball planning committee, had a daunting task ahead of them, never having attended, let alone planned, a Campion Ball before. “The whole thing really looked really magical,” Genevieve said. “It was fantastic, and we were really pleased, especially considering our lack of experience.” In opening the ball, Campion President Paul Morrissey congratulated the committee on putting together such a spectacular event. “This is a night of great joy, and I really encourage you to enjoy yourselves and have a great time,” Dr Morrissey said. The ball featured some new elements not seen before, including a ‘magic mirror’ photo booth, a wandering minstrel, fire-twirling and a DJ booth, which followed the live music. “The ball committee worked together very well, with Abbey Pereira in charge. Everyone had a can-do attitude, staying up late on Friday night getting everything done.” Genevieve said. Campion Ball Guests Talent Night Performers
