• Engaging students in your community
• Transitioning new students to full members of the community in the first term
Other webinars in this series include:
• Community as a Retention Tool – April, 2010
• Maintaining Community After Graduation: Benefits to the Institution – May, 2010
Additional information about the upcoming webinars in this series will be available soon. Write us at connect@edmap.biz for more information.
Today’s students, especially those who will be first in their family to go to college, crave advice and support from near-peers who can provide invaluable first-hand accounts of what college is really like and why it is important. This session will explore the powerful role that near-peers play in motivating and guiding students to and through college. We will provide examples of how current upperclassmen, enrolled college students, and recent college graduates can offer support, candor, and motivation to see the “light at the end of the tunnel”, particularly for boys who oftentimes lack positive male role models.

What Scholarship is About
The Simon Family Foundation’s “Simon Schol-
ars Program” was created to help economically
disadvantaged students who face difficult life
circumstances and seek to advance themselves
through a college education. It is an especially
unique scholarship program in that it begins
in the summer before a student’s junior year
in high school. The Simon Scholars Program
offers its participants tools, mentoring and sup-
port that create successful college applicants
with the ultimate goal of developing confident
individuals who remain highly competitive
throughout their college years and beyond.
The Simon Family Foundation understands that
it takes much more than financial support to
change lives. Thus, the Foundation has de-
veloped and become known for its intensive,
hands-on college preparatory support program.
We offer our recipients a host of resources
aimed at whole-person development while in
high school, including leadership and life-skills
training, college coaching/application assis-
tance, a notebook computer, SAT/ACT prepara-
tion courses and exposure to the arts.
