This document summarizes a project where Mabey provided infrastructure to support construction improvements at Junction 19 on the M1 motorway in England. Mabey supplied two sets of equipment using their Super PowerBrace Plus system to support a 25-foot deep cofferdam and later to brace a 76x33x33 foot frame alongside the live motorway. The equipment was provided on a short timeline and allowed construction to relieve congestion for over 150,000 daily commuters without needing on-site fabrication.

The Challenge
Junction 19 of the M1, which is located on the boundary between the
counties of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire, is important for north/
south and east/west traffic movements across the UK. Over 150,000
vehicles pass through the existing junction daily causing congestion and
delays, particularly during peak travel periods.
In January 2014, construction began at the junction to relievie congestion
and improve road safety by adding a number of bridges, underpasses
and new exit and access slip roads. Mabey was contacted by Skanska to
supply two sets of specialist equipment capable of taking high loads over
large spans.
The Solution
Mabey engineers provided the solution using our Super PowerBrace Plus
System. The first excavation, where a bridge foundation is due to be built,
required a frame to support a 25’ deep, sheet-piled cofferdam with very
high loads of over 8,900 lbs/ft and a plan size of 73’ x 36’. This part of the
project was completed in April 2015.
The second excavation required three sided support for the side of the
M1 while construction work was carried out below and alongside the live
roadway. The support needed was 76’ x 33’ x 33’ in size. Through our
own engineers, we provided Super Powerbrace Plus frames supported
by Super Bracing Struts to brace and prop the frame. This phase of the
project was completed August 2015.
The Result
Mabey’s engineers provided the best possible system to compare
with structural steel in price, and all Super PowerBrace Plus equipment
was provided with a very short lead time without the need for on-site
fabrication, which allowed ease of installation.
