The Battle of Okinawa began on April 1, 1945 and was known as Operation: Iceberg. It was the first time US forces set foot on Japanese soil and involved 1300 US battleships bombarding Okinawa. The Japanese used kamikaze attacks and the high American casualties influenced the decision to use atomic bombs later in the war.
