Based in Houston, Texas, Ivor R. Ellul is an oil and gas industry leader who seeks out resource maximization strategies across the globe. Having served as Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Gulf Coast Section chair, Ivor R. Ellul maintains a close watch on industry trends. As reported in the SPE’s Journal of Petroleum Technology, one new resource on the horizon may be manufactured gas, or what a Baker Hughes-invested German startup Electrochaea calls “low-carbon synthetic natural gas.” The firm’s technique involves converting hydrogen and carbon dioxide into methane through single-cell archaea microbes. At the same time, Baker Hughes has acquired Compact Carbon Capture (3C), which has developed a next-generation carbon-separation method with modular units. The end CO2 product could be supplied to Electrochaea and other users to remove the same amount of carbon as they produce. This energy-frontier strategy is shared by several other companies currently testing concepts. Together, they have created Store&Go as a way of promoting the concept of “green gas.” Industry watchers believe that synthetic gas will not be truly competitive over the next decade, as significant natural gas and crude oil reserves exist with low-cost mining potential. However, by 2050, many see a combination of production drops in oil and gas, combined with national regulations and carbon reduction commitments, increasing demand significantly.

SPE and AAPG Explore Merger Possibilities to Create New Organization

A Houston, Texas engineer, Ivor R. Ellul’s career spans nearly 40 years, including as managing director of energy assets advisory firm CiSK Ventures, Ltd. since 2015. In addition to his extensive career in petroleum engineering, Ivor R. Ellul, Ph.D, maintains membership in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), a nonprofit organization comprised of 140,600 members across 144 countries. In May 2021, the SPE announced that it and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) are considering merging to become a new organization. The two organizations decided, after unanimous agreement from the AAPG Executive Committee and the SPE Board of Directors, to create a steering committee that would further explore the benefits of this merger and the new organization. For years, the two groups have collaborated on various projects. Some of the more notable events have been the Offshore Technology Conference, Unconventional Resources Technology Conference, and the International Petroleum Technology Conference. Recognizing the role of natural gas and oil in the global landscape, the two are considering the potential benefits of harnessing skills and experience from both organizations to drive innovation in new technologies and digitalization. The hope is that the newly formed organization comprised of subsurface geoscience and engineering teams will open up opportunities for education, information sharing, and galvanizing this particular sector of the scientific community.

Enhanced Oil Recovery for Maximizing Oil Reservoir Production

Ivor R. Ellul is an established presence in the Texas energy sector. He leads CiSK Ventures, Ltd, and delivers client-focused asset development solutions. Among Ivor R. Ellul’s areas of expertise are drilling technologies and enhanced oil recovery (EOR). US Department of Energy has shown that recovery with pumping units is responsible for as little as 10 percent of oil production per reservoir. The role of secondary recovery processes is crucial in ensuring that maximum value is derived from drilling operations. The most common secondary recovery technique involves the injection of fluids into the reservoir, thus assisting in the sweeping of oil towards the wellbore. This can be responsible for between 20 and 40 percent of oil eventually produced from a well. EOR, also known as tertiary recovery, can extract an additional 30 to 60 percent of oil that is otherwise unrecoverable. This is accomplished by any combination of gas injection, heating of the oil, and chemical injection. The advantage of the EOR approach is that it optimizes output from wells that have been drilled and may otherwise remain unused after having produced for a while. It also has a relatively small environmental footprint if managed appropriately. However, there are site specific constraints to EOR, including potential for geological limitations that lead to excessive costs.

Overview of the Downstream Sector of the Energy Industry

Chartered Engineer Ivor R. Ellul attended the University of Malta for his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering. He studied at Imperial College, London, for his master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in petroleum engineering. As the managing director of CiSK Ventures, Ltd., Ivor Ellul offers consulting services to the oil and gas industry. The oil and gas industry consists of companies divided into upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors. In the upstream category are corporations that discover and extract hydrocarbons. They're otherwise known as exploration and production companies. Comparatively, the midstream sector connects the upstream and midstream enterprises and involves storage and transportation activities. Then there is the downstream sector, which is an essential facet of the oil and gas industry. It's responsible for post-production operations in the industry, such as refining, distributing, and selling natural gas and oil-based products like lubricants and waxes. Organizations in the downstream sectors typically have the closest access to consumers. This sector is a key provider to numerous industries like, for example, the medical industry, delivering the ingredients for the manufacture of medical and pharmaceutical equipment. In particular, the downstream industry generates plastics, which are essential materials for manufacturing and packaging purposes. Agriculture is another field that benefits from the energy industry’s downstream sector. Natural gas is a fundamental requirement for fertilizer production generated by the downstream industry. Additionally, the oil industry helps develop pesticides, while farm equipment typically operates using diesel and gasoline fuel produced by the downstream sector.

SPE Platform Energy4me Creates Virtual Lessons

Ivor R. Ellul, of Houston, Texas, has 40 years in the energy industry, culminating in his current position as managing director with CiSK Ventures, Ltd where he advises industry professionals on energy strategies. Outside of his career, Ivor Ellul has been involved with multiple professional organizations, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). In July, the SPE platform energy4me uploaded four training videos on YouTube and the SPE’s Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) site. Energy4me is an educational platform that provides information on energy-related topics, and the videos are part of its efforts. The videos, produced in Arabic and including English subtitles, are targeted toward parents and students and demonstrate various energy experiments. Four certified energy4me trainers from the KSA presented the material, and students from different parts of the country have used them. Visitors to the KSA website can access the videos, quizzes, experiment fun facts, participant photos, and videos. Developed during quarantine, the videos use home materials to perform simple experiments. The content also gives SPE volunteers an additional option when visiting schools.

Energy Institute Looks to End Its Own Impact on Climate

With a wealth of oil and gas experience, Ivor R. Ellul is CiSK Ventures’ managing director, a position he has held since 2015. Alongside the role, Ivor Ellul is a member of the Energy Institute (EI), which publishes research and educational materials about the industry, alongside advocating for legislative change focused on oil and gas. The organization has confirmed that it plans to completely eradicate the impact that it has on the environment by 2050. In a statement, EI says that it aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by over a quarter by 2025, subsequently reducing them further within key time frames before becoming emissions neutral. To do so, EI states that it will use science-based methodologies while also tackling critical logistical and operational factors that impact the environment, such as air travel. The organization has outlined several steps to become GHG neutral, including developing plans that will help change employee behavior while also building company optimization.
