Experience & Expertise
I have extensive, international experience as a leader of information systems and IS capital projects, specialising
in oil and gas exploration and production. I mix deep IT and business knowledge with energy and experience to
deliver world class services and solutions. My aim is to make IS a profit centre by applying data analytics in E&P.
My expertise covers geoscience and subsurface engineering systems, data integration, information & knowledge
management, data visualisation & analytics. My skills are technical and managerial, gained in roles as an analyst,
systems consultant, programme director and application, data and information services manager for integrated
E&P companies.
Experienced in offshore and onshore business assets on 4 continents, including CSG to LNG processes.
Geoscience applications and big data technologies including MDM, visualisation and predictive analytics.
Infrastructure, platform and software technologies that allow cloud computing to work in oil and gas.
Prince2 and MSP Practitioner with hands-on experience of PMI project management methodology.
Achievements
IS Strategy & Planning - business analysis with insight, delivering integrated, targeted business solutions.
In 2009 I established the Santos Subsurface Applications Governance Group and defined the Santos
subsurface systems strategy and rolling 3 year work programme. As a result, the Subsurface Data
Integration, Visualisation and Advanced Analytics projects are now delivering over $20mpa in benefits.
As Manager of Knowledge, Information and Data, I identified strategic gaps in records management and
process compliance and initiated the knowledge management and social networking strategy for Santos.
Service Management – high performance and cost effective application, information and data services.
As IS Subsurface Manager at Santos from 2009-13, my team won the global RedHat Innovator of Year
2011 for remote delivery of geoscience systems. See www.redhat.com/summit/santos.
Application Support and Data Management teams consistently achieved top quartile AUPEC survey
results for price performance. We reduced the cost per geoscientist from $57kpa to $49kpa over 4 years,
and managed a 50% increase in geoscientists & subsurface engineers with a relatively flat Opex budget.
Portfolio & Programme Management – directing innovation programmes that add material value.
In 2011-12 my Spatial Information team delivered a world class GIS web portal to discover and display all
geospatial data and related unstructured information at a fraction of the cost of using ESRI.
From 2009 I lead a successful migration from Geoframe to Paradigm for geophysical interpretation and
improved integration with Geolog, Petrel and Petrosys for reservoir modelling and mapping.
For Petro-Canada in 2005 I lead the IS programme for a £12m London office relocation with no downtime.
In 2004 I lead a C$4m Wide Area Network programme connecting 13 Petro-Canada International sites.
Business Partnering – driving transformational change, making business common sense out of IT jargon.
I dramatically improved Santos geoscience systems performance and cost by initiating and driving the
Open Source TurboVNC thin client application platform, see www.turbovnc.org .
I lead a $3m redesign of the Santos well information system and negotiated the $2m commercialisation of
the Santos prospects and leads resource management system with Petrosys, the supplier. This will be a
commercial product in 2015 and a win/win for Santos and Petrosys.
In 2010 I lead the $11m IM@S transformational change programme to deliver $24m of benefits in how
Santos manages Information, using the SharePoint 2010 platform coupled with BI and workflow tools.
As business partner for the Santos Asia BU, I directed the migration of exploration data to in-country
systems to comply with SKK MIGAS, the Indonesian oil and gas industry regulator.
Communications and Training – deep understanding of the interactions between people and technology.
I have presented at many technical conferences on topics such as cloud systems and big data analytics.
In Petro-Canada I introduced video as a business communications medium, providing live global reach for
the CEO to deliver townhall meetings, and I established video as a knowledge transfer medium at Santos.
I authored and presented “Unix for Geoscientists” to 1000+ technical staff world-wide from 1993 to 2003.
I was Technical Editor of Learning Tree Course 428 and a Unix and TCP/IP trainer for Sun Microsystems.
