Sly Lee founded the non-profit Hydrous to create 3D scans of coral reefs to advance scientific research and public understanding of reefs. He developed a process using standard cameras to scan 33x33 foot sections of reef, taking 250 photos over 15-30 minutes. The photos are then processed into high resolution 3D images. Lee hopes this technology will allow citizen scientists to help map corals worldwide and educate those unable to see reefs in person. Other Hydrous expeditions include studying threatened fish in the Solomon Islands and monitoring coral bleaching in Hawaii.
