1. The study analyzed the association between air pollution (PM2.5 and O3) and mortality in Los Angeles using a cohort from the American Cancer Society and controlling for individual and neighborhood factors.
2. It found that all-cause mortality was associated with higher PM2.5 levels, with a relative risk of 1.17 for each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5. Risks were higher for deaths from ischemic heart disease and lung cancer.
3. The results provide evidence that intra-city variations in air pollution exposure lead to stronger health effects than prior studies using average exposures across cities, suggesting localized pollution drives additional health impacts.

ABSTRACT:Identification and provision of zoning of vulnerable aquifers, i.e. areas where pollutants can
penetrate and distribute from ground surface to groundwater system, is an appropriate management tool to
prevent the contamination of groundwater resources. There are several methods to assess the vulnerability of
aquifers, which are generally divided into three main groups: statistical methods, mathematical methods, and
overlapping indexes methods. In this research, due to the importance of plain aquifer for agricultural and
drinking water supply of the region, drastic method is one of the most applicable overlapping methods used. The
plain aquifer vulnerability map derived from the combination of seven raster maps of drastic model parameters
(water table depth, pure supply, aquifer type, soil type, topographic slope, non-saturated environment
ingredients and hydraulic conductivity) is used; it has been developed in seven layers in ArcGis software. The
final aquifer vulnerability map was prepared for contamination by weighting and ranking and combining the
seven layers above. Matching the nitrate ion on the final drastic map, it was determined that all points with high
nitrate are in the high contamination range, approving the accuracy of the model. According to the zoning map
obtained, about 0.98%, 12.98%, 62.56%, and 23.48% of the study area were within the low, moderate, moderate
to high, and high vulnerability ranges, respectively. The results of this study indicate that the highest
vulnerability potential is in the moderate to high class, and the northern, northwestern and western areas of the
plain have a high potential, while the southwest areas have the lowest potential.

Exposures to fine particulate air pollution and
respiratory outcomes in adults using two national
datasets: a cross-sectional study

Abstract
Background: Relationships between chronic exposures to air pollution and respiratory health outcomes have yet
to be clearly articulated for adults. Recent data from nationally representative surveys suggest increasing disparity
by race/ethnicity regarding asthma-related morbidity and mortality. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the
relationship between annual average ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations and respiratory
outcomes for adults using modeled air pollution and health outcome data and to examine PM2.5 sensitivity across
race/ethnicity.
Methods: Respondents from the 2002-2005 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) were linked to annual kriged
PM2.5 data from the USEPA AirData system. Logistic regression was employed to investigate increases in ambient
PM2.5 concentrations and self-reported prevalence of respiratory outcomes including asthma, sinusitis and chronic
bronchitis. Models included health, behavioral, demographic and resource-related covariates. Stratified analyses
were conducted by race/ethnicity.
Results: Of nearly 110,000 adult respondents, approximately 8,000 and 4,000 reported current asthma and recent
attacks, respectively. Overall, odds ratios (OR) for current asthma (0.97 (95% Confidence Interval: 0.87-1.07)) and
recent attacks (0.90 (0.78-1.03)) did not suggest an association with a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5. Stratified analyses
revealed significant associations for non-Hispanic blacks [OR = 1.73 (1.17-2.56) for current asthma and OR = 1.76
(1.07-2.91) for recent attacks] but not for Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites. Significant associations were observed
overall (1.18 (1.08-1.30)) and in non-Hispanic whites (1.31 (1.18-1.46)) for sinusitis, but not for chronic bronchitis.
Conclusions: Non-Hispanic blacks may be at increased sensitivity of asthma outcomes from PM2.5 exposure.
Increased chronic PM2.5 exposures in adults may contribute to population sinusitis burdens.

tecting individual and public he-
alth. When done efficiently and
properly, chemical risk assess-
ment enables risk management
actions that minimize the in-
cidence and effects of environ-
mentally induced diseases related
to chemical exposure. However,
traditional chemical risk assess-
ment is faced with multiple chal-
lenges with respect to predicting
and preventing disease in human
populations, and epidemiological
studies increasingly report obser-
vations of adverse health effects
at exposure levels predicted
from animal studies to be safe
for humans. This discordance
reinforces concerns about the
adequacy of contemporary risk
assessment practices for pro-
tecting public health.
It is becoming clear that to
protect public health more effec-
tively, future risk assessments will
need to use the full range of
available data, draw on innovative
methods to integrate diverse data
streams, and consider health
endpoints that also reflect the
range of subtle effects and mor-
bidities observed in human pop-
ulations.
Considering these factors,
there is a need to reframe
chemical risk assessment to be
more clearly aligned with the
public health goal of minimizing

from epidemiology studies of the

Quantification of rate of air pollution by means ofIJARBEST JOURNAL
To develop efficient strategies for pollution control, it is essential to assess
both the costs of control and the benefits that may result. These benefits will often include
improvements in public health, including reductions in both morbidity and premature
mortality. Until recently, there has been little guidance about how to calculate the benefits
of air pollution controls and how to use those estimates to assign priorities to different air
pollution control strategies. In this work, a method is described for quantifying the benefits
of reduced ambient concentrations of pollutants (such as ozone and particulate matter)
typically found in urban areas worldwide. The method applies the data on Jakara, Indonesia,
an area characterized by little wind, high population density (8 million people), congested
roads, and ambient air pollution. The magnitude of the benefits of pollution control depends
on the level of air pollution, the expected effects on health of the pollutants (dose-response),
the size of the population affected, and the economic value of these effects. In the case of
Jakarta, the methodology suggests that reducing exposure to lead and nitrogen dioxide
should also be a high priority. An important consequence of ambient lead pollution is a
reduction in learning abilities for children, measured as I.Q. loss. Apart from that, reducing
the proportion of respirable particles can reduce the amount of illness and premature
mortality.

Molecular Epidemiology entails the inclusion in epidemiological research of biologic measurement made at the molecular level-and thus is an extension of the increasing use of biologically based measures in epidemiological research (McMichael ,1994).The term ‘molecular epidemiology’ may suggest the existence of a sub-discipline with substantive new research content . Molecular techniques, however, are directed principally at enhancing the measurement of exposure, effect, or susceptibility , and not formulating new etiologic hypotheses. As techniques of refinement and elaboration , the integration of molecular measures into mainstream epidemiologic research can offer higher resolution answers in relation to disease causation.
