intensifies media use in public space. Media theorist Eric Kluitenberg
emphasizes this emerging trend, as he notes that the city becomes an intensified
mediatized space where the modus operandi is carried out almost without
thinking. The aim of this article is to show, with the use of location-based audio
walks as case studies, how this intensive hybridization of space on the contrary
is able to provide new possibilities to engage with space. The power of
location-based audio walks is its aesthetic and poetic potential of layering new
information over a physical space, while revealing the stories, memories and
history of specific physical locations. In doing so, these audio walks can be
seen as a poetic act: they draw together human involvement and invite
engagement with reality to such an extent that it enters consciousness and it reimagines
space poetically.

This presentation by Susana Bautista, Adjunct Faculty, Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, University of Southern California - explores the notion of museums and placemaking, and how digital technologies are enabling museums to mark their places in new and innovative ways. When museums think about technology today, they must also think about place. A few questions to ask are: What are the new places that museums are occupying in the digital age? How do museums act with their visitors in these new places? How do these “new” places connect with the “old” places? What new places are museum visitors occupying, and what are they doing there? How do museums “make” place, and is there a hub? Placemaking has existed from Stonehenge to the Acropolis, and to monumental buildings centrally placed within a community such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Getty Center; and museums historically have had branches or satellites, programs within the community, and community partners. What is new is how technology allows us to better understand the networked museum experience, to engage its global community of visitors and users, and to connect physical and online places, mobile and fixed experiences.

Your final research paper is to analyze the importance of architectural space, exploring how at least two cultures express space and the importance of architectural space. I read the wonderful discussions that you all wrote about urban space. Now let us narrow our vision to our immediate space and how we react to space. Try to keep the paper to no more than 15 pages including citations.

and windows, the movement of walls, and even the lowering and raising
of floors and ceilings produce the personalized spaces that characterize
soft architecture. Theatrical stages have had this capability for some
time, and thus have a lot to teach the designer seeking to produce soft
architecture.
Traditional Japanese architecture is an early version of soft architecture.
The ability to change the use and “feel” of a space by simply moving a rice
paper screen and rearranging the mats on the floor is a manual, low-tech
version of soft architecture. A more recent manifestation of softness was
attempted with the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1977) (Figure 93).
It was to have an interior in which many walls and floors were movable.
Unfortunately that degree of flexibility was unjustified. Consequently the
building was renovated in 2000 to increase its capacity and efficiency by
“hardening” it.
In soft architecture each force applied to it creates content that has
form, as “water poured into a vase has form” (Ezra Pound). The water-
generated Blur building by Herzog and Meuron poetically illustrates the
new frontier of soft or reflexive architecture. The term now refers to any
architecture that is not finite or fixed.

The Intrinsically Engaging Narratives Of Leisure Travel
This pioneering research redefines the way we market leisure travel. Artificial segmentations based on personality differences offer weak foundations on which to build brand strategies. To deeply engage us, a brand must have a solid inner architecture deeply rooted in the fundamentals of humanity. Beneath all the phantasmagoria of global marketing communication, lies order and rhythm, the source code of our human behaviour.
Summarising the results of our research, this presentation analyses the fundamental motives underpinning consumer behaviour towards leisure travel and proposes a way to build leisure travel brands that engage people at a profoundly human level.
Our fundamental human motives are like bare patterns in any language. Successful brands infuse the pattern, fertilising the basic forms, in a unique and profoundly human way, enabling people to experience deep patterns that make them feel alive.
There is a direct correlation between our fundamental human motives, the most direct way to engage people, and the level of sales and profit. The efficiency of communication budgets is maximised when the authentic codes of the brand germinate the deepest motives driving sales and profit in the category. Today we have no excuse for saying that “we waste half of our advertising budget but we don’t know which half”.
Above all, by satisfying the most fundamental of our human motives the brand is deeply humanistic in that it offers holistic, universal experiences that no longer satisfy some individual needs but the needs of the species.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
