2. INTRODUCTION
My group and I decided to plan out our ideas by created documents like storyboard,
sketches budgets, health and safety plans and feedbacks from the audience this way we
can visualize and have an idea what the advert may look like as to just picturing it in our
heads. When we were first thinking up the idea/s of our advertisement, we created a
spider diagram to brainstorm all ideas we had. We expanded on all points put down on
the spider diagram and we finally had two ideas, one of which would be chosen for our
advertisement. We then decided to sketch the two ideas so that we could visualise what
the advertisement would look like. This was very useful as it allowed us to discard any
ideas we thought we could not take out in real life or may have been difficult to do.
Looking at all three sketches, we weighed up the negatives/positives and finally chose
one of the two.
3. DOCUMENTS USED
Pre production document
• Production budget
• Costumes and props
• Contingency plan
• Story boards
Audience Research
• Survey monkey
• Focus group
4. COSTUMES AND PROPS
My team and I thought about the props/equipment we needed. The document helped to
purchase the correct costume so we decided to create a budget. It was good to have this
document so we could look back on it and also it is good we created it so it is easily
accessible for us. We only used a few props like a top, the mascara and false eyelashes.
5. PRODUCTION BUDGET
This was very essential to us as we were I charge of producing our products and money.
Although we did not necessarily need a huge amount of equipment, props etc. what we
wanted to use was high quality and popular brand of mascara. The top was sold at a
price of 20 pounds, the actual Rimmel London mascara was 5 pounds which is very
reasonable for drug store product. Travelling total at 5 pounds and food total was at
pounds considering we were 4 in my team. Everything was a total of 40 pounds. This
documentation was a guideline in knowing the exact amount needed to be spent and
helped us not to go over board.
6. CONTINGENCY PLAN
A contingency plan is a plan devised for an outcome other than in the usual (expected)
plan. It is often used for risk management when an exceptional risk that, though
unlikely, would have tragic consequences. This documentation helped to solve problems
quicker. I listed a few situations. For example, if one of the equipment got missing the
crew is willing to contribute to provide another one.
7. STORYBOARD
We created a storyboard for the idea we were going to use so for the advert. We brought
this document with us when we were filming the advertisement so that we could refer
back to it before each shot. The reason for this was to keep us on track and not go off
the plan we had initially came up with while the filming. If we did not take this document
with us we would have forgot which part come next within the advertisement; as we had
it with us we could look which part come next, the duration of the shot, the movement of
the character/s, and the shot type. If we were to do this again, one of the things we
would have included will have been more detailing within the storyboard as it was very
basic. With that said, it was still very useful to have and helped us film.
8. FOCUS GROUP
A focus group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of people are asked
about their perceptions, opinions, beliefs, and attitudes towards a product, service,
concept, advertisement, idea, or packaging.
Focus groups are frequently used because they foster valuable group dynamics that can
be observed live by clients and because they are cost-effective. However, it is important
to determine if and when the focus group is the appropriate type of qualitative research
to use. For instance, focus groups are often used during the exploratory phase of
product development. This is before anything has been put into action, and a production
company wants initial opinions and reactions to a product prior to market launch.
9. SURVEY MONKEY
Survey Monkey provides free, customizable surveys that include data analysis, sample
selection, bias elimination, and data representation tools. In addition, Survey Monkey
offers more large scale enterprise options for companies interested in both data analysis,
brand management, and consumer focused marketing.
I used survey monkey to get an insight to what the audience likes and dislikes. and also
what they thought of the advert.
10. WHAT WORKED AND DID NOT
I feel that throughout the pre-production stage, the most useful documents we created were the
storyboards and the Production schedule Call sheet. I feel this way because the story boards enabled us to
visualise the advertisement and it allowed the actors to know what they were doing. If I was to just tell the
actors what the advertisement was about, I feel that it would not have been as clear, and actor would not
have been le to create a good performance. We were able to refer back to this document throughout the
planning/filming of the advertisement and it was very useful. Also the Production schedule Call sheet, as
previously mentioned, I feel that it was very useful because it was an exact list of hat had been initially
planned for us to follow, it had a list of the costume and props, location venue, productions, crew on it, all
these were the things we needed to refer back to. If I could do this project again one thing I would include
would be a sophisticated dialogue written down for the voice over and make sure the actor doing the voice
over has severally rehearsed over the line. With that said, it was a very useful document and was a big help
throughout all parts of the planning/filming.
I feel that the least useful document, although still quite useful within planning this advertisement,
was the contact sheet. I feel this way as we did not really follow this document when going to film. We had
it in mind to follow it but it had one contact on the sheet and we did not get into any trouble while filming
so did not have a particular reason to use it. The reason for this was because my filming crew and I stayed
in one location throughout the whole process filming even though we had initially planned on using two
location Robert clack upper and lower school. And we also did not have to go offsite.
11. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, if this project was carry out again, I would consider using more editing
techniques that can increase the quality of the advert. Also I would include spending
more time understanding the pre-production process. This would mean no confusion at
all, whereas we did have some with certain shots and meeting times. I feel that if I had
spent more time understanding getting to know the purpose of these documents, the
overall quality of the advert would be increased as we could constantly refer to the
documents which would have been thought about carefully. I am pleased, however, with
the advertisement and I strongly feel that these pre-production documents helped
throughout the task.
