12. Installationof Hoses
Flexible hoses can be classified intotwo broadcategories, viz.,Rubber hoses andMetallic hoses. The selection ofthe
hoses is made depending upon the service conditions (pressure, temperature andother environmental
conditions)
• Under pressure, a hose may change in length. Always providesome slack in the hose toallow forthis shrinkage
orexpansion. (However, excessive slack in hose lines is one ofthe most common causes ofpoor appearance).
•If a hose is installed with a twist in it,high operating pressures tend toforce it straight. This can loosen the fitting nut
oreven burstthe hose at the point ofstrain.
•At bends, provide enough hose fora wide radiuscurve. Tootight abend pinches the hose andrestricts the flow. The
line could even kink andclose entirely. In many cases, use ofthe rightfittings oradapters can eliminate bends or
kinks.
•In applications where there is considerable vibrationor flexing, allow additional hose length. The metal hose fittings,
ofcourse, arenot flexible andproper installation protects metal partsfromundue stress, andavoidskinks in the
hose.
•When 90 deg. adapters areused, the assembly becomes neater looking andeasier toinspect andmaintain. It uses less
hose, too.
•Hose assemblies in service should beinspected frequently forleakage, kinking, corrosion, abrasion or anyother signs
ofwear ordamage. Hose assemblies that areworn ordamaged should be removed from service andreplaced
immediately.
