Sound in TV and film can be divided into two types: diegetic and non-diegetic. Diegetic sound belongs to everything within the story such as dialogue, speech, background noise and ambient sound effects. Non-diegetic sound is added later in post-production, including music, narration and additional sound effects not part of the on-screen story. Sound has properties of tone, pitch, volume and resonance and sometimes rhythm.
