Sally is having trouble sleeping despite being exhausted from her busy schedule of school and work. She usually grabs a hamburger on the way home to eat before bed so she can go straight to sleep. Dr. Ozzer suggests her fast food meals may be contributing to her sleep problems and recommends trying a quality calorie meal instead for 30 days. Excerpts from his new book explain that heavy, high calorie meals before bed provide empty calories and prevent deep sleep, while quality calorie meals with nutrients promote better sleep.

Dear Dr. Ozzer,
HELP! I‟m having trouble sleeping. I‟m a daytime
doctoral student that works full time during the evening
hours.
I have little time to do anything else but go to school and
work and it seems like with all that I have going on and
as exhausted as I am, I‟d be able to sleep.
So that I can save time, I usually grab a hamburger on the
way home from work that way I can go straight to bed
when I get home. By the time I‟m home, my belly is
full and I‟m ready to go to bed.
What can you do to help me?
Sincerely,
Sally Shaws

Greetings Sally,
Thank you for your inquiry. Sleep issues are prevalent in our society
especially amongst college students.
In your case, it sounds like you may have a few factors leading to your
sleep troubles. Your schedule is quite hectic and while you have
attempted to save time by picking up fast food meals, you actually
may be adding to your sleep problems.
Often times, after eating we want to take a nap or in your case go straight
to bed. This tendency to want to sleep after a meal can be caused by
the type of food that is eaten, i.e. a hamburger. And although we
may go to sleep after eating , it‟s not always a quality sleep.
I am just finishing my newest book, “Quality Calorie Meal” TM that addresses
sleep issues caused by meals people have eaten. I am attaching
excerpts from my new book that I feel will help you in getting some
quality sleep.
Over the next 30 days, I‟d like to suggest that you try modifying your diet,
especially with the meal immediately before bed, and replace your
fast food hamburger meals with quality calories.
Please let me know if this modification helps with your sleep issues. My
best in your college and career endeavors!
Cordially,
Dr. Stan Ozzer
p.s. In the near future, I will be sending you a signed copy of the “Quality
Calorie Meal” TM!
5. A HEAVY HIGH CALORIE MEAL BEFORE BED?
A nice big high calorie meal will put one right
to sleep.
High calorie meal usually is a high carb meal.
Eating a large meal before bed can add
unnecessary calories without nutrients
otherwise called „empty calories‟.
Examples of high carb, high calorie meal are
rice, potatoes, processed foods, fast foods.
7. A HEAVY HIGH CALORIE MEAL BEFORE BED?
Empty calories make one feel full but do not
provide necessary nutrients to the body.
This causes our brain to signal to the body
that we need more food. (Midnight/late night
cravings?)
This „signaling‟ doesn‟t let the body to relax
preventing deep sleep!
Also the empty calorie food turns into fat!
8. QUALITY CALORIE MEAL BEFORE BED
TM
Quality calorie meal provides nutrients to the
body along with calories.
Nutrients are typically protein, vitamins,
dietary minerals, antioxidants, amino acids,
or dietary fiber.
Quality calorie meals include fresh veggies,
lean meat, beans, unprocessed food like
brown rice.
10. QUALITY CALORIE MEAL BEFORE BED
TM
Quality calorie meals before bed makes our
body function more efficiently.
High-fiber veggies and lean proteins will
make you feel full and they‟re low in calories.
Lean proteins and vegetables are less likely
to be stored as fat because your body will
use the nutrients in them to nourish itself
preventing the late night /midnight cravings.
