Solar Energy
.
Solar energy is
radiant light and heat
from the Sun that is
harnessed using a
range of ever-evolving
technologies such as
solar heating,
photovoltaics, solar
thermal energy, etc.
What is solar energy?
Solar Power is a free source of Energy.
It is an essential source of renewable energy, and its
technologies are broadly characterized as either
passive solar or active solar depending on how they
capture and distribute solar energy or convert it
into solar power.
Solar Collector

Solar Collector
What is Solar Collector?
A solar collector is a device that collects and/or
concentrates solar radiation from the Sun. These devices
are primarily used for active solar heating and allow for
the heating of water for personal use.
Types of
Solar
Collector

Solar Collector
Classification of Solar collector
Solar Collector
Concentrating Type
Non-Concentrating
Type
Solar Collector
 Converging solar radiation from large area to small area.
 Beam radiation utilized.
 Optical methods (reflection, refraction).
 Solar Tracking required.
 Diffused radiation cannot be concentrated.
 High Temperature attained.
 Flexible construction.

2. Fixed mirror solar
concentrator
3. Linear Fresnel lens
collector
Fig. Cylindrical parabolic concentrator
• In this type of collector,
the solar radiations falling
on the area of the
parabolic reflector are
concentrated at the focus
of the parabola.
• The focus of solar
radiations changes with
the change in sun’s
elevation.
Fig. Parabolic Dish collector
• In these collectors, the receiver
is placed at the focal point of
the concentrator. The solar
beam radiations are focused at a
point where the receiver
(absorber) is placed. The solar
radiations are collected in the
receiver.
• A typical parabolic dish
collector has a dish of 6 m
diameter. This collector
requires two-axis tracking. It
can yield temperatures up to
3000oC.
Non-Concentrating Type Solar collector
• Absorb radiation received on surface.
• No optical concentration method.
• No need of solar tracking.
• Simple & compact construction.
• Fixed on rigid platform. So it is maintenance free.
• High temperature cannot achieved.

Flat Plate collector
• A Flat Plate Collector is a heat exchanger that converts the radiant
solar energy from the sun into heat energy using the well known
greenhouse effect.
• As the plate gets hotter this heat is conducted through the risers and
absorbed by the fluid flowing inside the copper pipes which is then
used by the household.
Flat Plate collector
Evacuated tube collector (ETC)
consists of single tubes that are
connected to a header pipe. To
reduce heat losses of the water-
bearing pipes to the ambient air,
each single tube is evacuated.
Evacuated tube Collector
Evacuated tube Collector
• High quality tubes made from borosilicate glass
• No clogging/choking
• Long lasting
• Better performance in winter and cloudy days
• Easy to install, operate and maintain
• Works efficiently with hard water
• Safe and environment friendly
Benefits of
solar
collector
04
Benefits of solar collector
• Endless amounts of energy, free of charge.
• No CO2 emissions during operation.
• Cost savings: remarkable less energy to heat water, remarkable
less energy for space heating.
• Reduced consumption of fossil fuels.
• Solar thermal systems can be integrated into existing systems.
• Modern systems work efficiently even in winter
Application
of Solar
Collector
05
Application of solar collector
• Solar water heating systems
• Thermosyphon systems
• Integrated collector storage systems
• Direct circulation systems
• Direct circulation systems
• Solar space heating and cooling
• Solar desalination
Methods to
consume
solar
energy
06
Methods to consume solar Energy
1) Photovoltaic Solar Panels.
2) Thermal Energy Harvesting: Energy of Electromagnetic Radiation.
3) Solar Water Heaters.
4) Vacuum Tube Solar Water Heater.
5) Molten Salt Solar Power.
Conclusion
07
Conclusion:
• Solar power is an immense source of directly useable energy and
ultimately creates other energy resources: Biomass, wind, hydropower
and wave energy.
• Different systems have been tested using solar collectors as a heat
source. Because heat pumps can work with low temperatures, the
collectors can be cheap. No general statement can be made about the
contribution of heat pumps to savings in fossil fuel consumption and
environmental emissions.
