Soil experiment by the Pinakazoidz
1. Made by the Pinkazoidz
Hypothesis : That the red dirt from Cathie's house holds
the most water.
Procedure:
1. Collect items: plastic cups, cheese cloth, sand, dirt, water,
measuring cups, and disposable cups.
2. Cut the cups in half and put the cheese cloth on the cup.
3.Measure 100ml of soil/sand and 100ml of water.
4. Take photographs and do profile on soil/sand.
5.Put soil/sand in cups and add water, leave for 1 minute in the sun
and then put in shade until proceeded.
6. Measure the amount of water that drained through and work out
how much was absorbed.
7.Work out what soil/sand absorbed the most water, and comparing
them.8. We can compare by taking the amount we put by the
amount that didn't get absorbed
2. Sand before we
put water in.
Red dirt before we
put water in.
Soil from top of
Hanging Rock before
we put water in.
Middle of Hanging
Rock before we put
water in.
After we put
water in.
All of them put
together.
3. Observation
Before
Soil from top of Hanging Rock: looks like brown powder with dead grass.
Feels like powdery with little bits of white clumps and roots. Smells like
dusty and earthy smell.
Soil from middle of Hanging Rock: looks like compost that has brown
specks. Smells like the earth faintly. Feels like soggy, damp, and clumpy.
Red Dirt: looks like cocoa. Feels like rough dirt but soft. Smells like salt.
Sand: looks like vanilla crumble, and rocky. Smells like the beach. Feels like
biscuit crumbs.
During
Soil from the top of Hanging Rock over flowed.
After
Soil from the top of Hanging Rock
Looks like the same. Feels like the same. Smells like normal earth.
Soil from the middle of Hanging Rock
Looks like poo. Feels like crumbly cookies and feels wet. Smells like really
faint soil.
4. Data
Red soil absorbed 70ml
Sand absorbed 80ml
Soil from middle of Hanging Rock absorbed 70ml
Soil from top of Hanging Rock absorbed 0ml
5. Conclusion
In conclusion we discovered that the sand absorbed the
most water because it absorbed 80 ml. The soil from the
top of Hanging Rock absorbed the least amount of water.
This means people at Hanging Rock should not plant
trees up at the top of Hanging Rock or if they do, put a
lot of nutrients soil with the plant.
