This presentation describes a four-year, multi-team experimental research program designed to study the effectiveness of games as a training tool for teaching about and mitigating cognitive bias. Game designs were iterated over multiple development cycles, informed by the results of both playtesting and formal experiments. The research showed that it is possible to reduce biased decision-making both immediately and long-term.

As Java deployments have become more complex, it has become harder and harder to get good insight into the structure and execution flow of the application. This applies particularly where middleware and third-party components or legacy software that has little or no design documentation is involved. This session introduces you to software archaeology: how to build an understanding of the layout and execution of your Java application from the deployed application itself.

Once upon a time: Why operations mythology matters
Operations people frequently communicate and learn through stories and mythology. Much like fairy tales: some of this mythology is healthy, some cautionary and some moralistic. Your Operations mythology is a strong element in how your organisational culture is shaped and more importantly can influence how your Operations team makes decisions.
I (with some help from Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm) am going to examine why these stories and mythology matter. We’ll look at how these shape your culture and set the mood for your Operations team. You’ll see why and how mythology, whether you’re in a giant enterprise or a tiny startup, often subconsciously influences the decisions and choices you make and the risks you’re prepared to take.
Finally, I’ll present some ways you can tell good stories, build healthy mythology, make use of that mythology for profit, and how you can eradicate the mythology and stories that give your Operation’s team nightmares.

A talk about lessons learned from building developer and sysadmin-facing tools at Puppet and Docker. It’s applicable to open source tools for broader use and the tools you and your teams develop inside your organization. Building tools, both external and internal, is hard. Getting people to adopt those tools is even harder. These are ideas to make it easier.

Most open source projects are rightly proud of their communities, long histories (both measured in time and version control), passionate debates and occasional trolling. Newcomers to these communities often face an uphill battle, though. Not just in understanding decision making processes and community standards, but in coming to terms with often complex, contradictory, and poorly documented code bases. This talk will introduce you to the concepts and tools you need to be an expert code, culture, and community archaeologist and quickly become productive and knowledgeable in an unknown or legacy code base.

The availability of on-demand, utility computing via the cloud introduces a new world of flexibility but also an entirely new charging model for applications. This new model has long promised to provide metered compute, charging you for exactly the amount of processing power you need, at the points that you need it.
The cloud is a large paradigm change, not just for some of the technologies involved but also for the economics and the return on investment for deploying and running a given application. Whereas traditional on-premises applications require upfront capital expenditure on hardware, cloud deployments have an ongoing operational expense. Additionally, clouds typically charge by the amount of memory used, whereas applications are typically developed and tuned to run as fast as possible using all the available (already paid for) resources.
Chris Bailey explains how this new economics of the cloud is driving changes in the way applications are architected, developed, and deployed.

Temporary tables are used to hold intermediate result sets and can be created locally or globally, while select into can be used to create a new table based on a select statement. Views allow simplified and customized data access and provide independence from the database schema while promoting security. Temp tables and views are powerful tools but should be used judiciously with an understanding of how they impact system resources and security.

For our second course project, we will be engaging in primary research. Primary research is the gathering of data through your own data collection efforts as apposed to secondary research through which you get information from the written accounts of others. The object of our primary research is a writing ecology of your choice. I will ask you to gather as much information as possible about a particular social group and their activities with a focus on the genres (types of written texts) that they use to engage in their activities. Our goal is to come to understand how this community uses writing to accomplish its goals, mediate its activities, and negotiate relationships among people, places, and resources.
To collect your data, you will need to get access to this community, discipline, etc., and, through interviews, observations, and surveys come to know what texts people use, what they use them to do, and how those texts relate to and maintain the systems of ideas, purposes, interpersonal relationships, cultural norms, and textual forms (Cooper) of the group.
The Text
To present your findings, I will ask you to create an ontography. An ontography is a type of info-graphic, blending words and visuals, to create a map of the interactions of this ecology (with a focus on one particular role in that ecology) showing how different genres connect people, places, activities, and objects/resources and explaining connections to the systems of the ecology. An ontography, then, is a visual map of the ecology, with text explaining the connections between parts. In many ways, it is like a schematic of a machine, showing all the parts and how they connect together to make the whole. In our ontography, the glue that connects everything together is the system of genres (textual forms) and the rest of the systems (ideas, purposes, interpersonal relations, and cultural norms that are maintained through their production).
You are free to use whatever technology you are familiar with or have access to. You do, in the end, need to make your ontography available in your Google Drive folder, but you can do so by taking a picture or scanning it if you choose to work with non-digital technology (science project boards, etc.). One technology that I have found particularly effective is Prezi, the online 3d presentation program. Prezi.com does allow for a limited free subscription, and its features allow you to create visually interesting and effective info-graphics. If you are familiar with or have access to graphic design software, you could certainly use such products to create your ontography.

Design Insights for the Next Wave Ontology Authoring Tools
We provide a systematic attempt to understand what users really require to build successful ontologies. To do so, we present the insights from an interview study with 15 ontology authors in which we identify the problems reported by authors, and the strategies they employ to solve them. Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
