Social Challenges as Transgender
Introduction:
Everyone owns a gender identity. What if there are some people who are not
defined as one gender? This is the only reason for cruelly treatment, racism, hate
and discrimination. All of above treatment in social life and crime for receiving
all this hateis just the existent. Transgender people are given their characteristics
not by choice but by nature’s conditions. They are equally human as any other
male or female living on this planet. Their feelings, emotions and dreams are
equally important as any other human. Social life never supports the transgender
existence and this ends up making their life a continue struggle.
Transgender word is not just complexity of gender identity. It’s also for those
person who don’t feel the same about being a specific gender (male and having
female habits). This research attempts to make better understanding with
transgender persons, by visiting real-time challenges and interviewing people
suffering social hate. As Awais said, “Only way to know pain is to suffer it!”
We choose real person because only they can share what real life and social issues
they had to and still facing in order to survive.
We can only try and show their life image. But the real deal starts when this
research is put into action. We recommend using this research to educate other
students and introduce its awareness so social hate for transgender can be reduced.
They deserve the rights to live and fulfill dreams as anyone else on this planet.
Challenges:
Our society is, however, very harsh on gender-variant people. Some transgender
people have lost their families, their jobs, their homes and their support.
Transgender children may be subject to ignorance at home, at school or in their
communities. These are not the root of their transgender identity; rather, they are
the side effects of society’s intolerance of transgender people (Transphobia).
Where to go?
Transgender people face discrimination in our society, in areas ranging from
appropriate medical care to parental rights, from education to employment. And
perhaps most common, transgender people face harassment and discrimination in
the areas of employment, housing, and educational institutes- mistreatment that
threatens their freedom to work and live safely in their own communities.
Where to study?
Normally transgender people are uneducated and if there are any educated ones
then they have only completed their primary or sometimes secondary level
education. During their educational period they are subjected to abuse and
harassment by their teachers and classmates, and if not, then they are taken as a
character that people make fun off.
Where to Work?
Government provides very little space for transgender people to do white collar
jobs. Due to little or no opportunity transgender people indulge in professions like
dancing, performing on stages and begging. If by chance a transgender person gets
employment in any organization, then because of his behavior he suffers the issue
of harassment in the organization, or else they are fired from jobs. Such
circumstances contribute to the unavailability of professions for transgender and
hence they become self-employed.
Where their life ends
Old age of transgender people is the most critical period of their life as they have
no connections with their families, so there is no one to support them at old ages
except their disciples who sometimes give them money or food.
Why Choose Unethical Occupations
Most transgender people described first sexual intercourse experiences at the age
of 8-12 years. The first sexual relationship in most cases was developed with male
relatives, neighbors, or lodging tutors. Most of these incidents occurred by force
and were unprotected, putting them at risk of transmission of STI/HIV. In some
cases, they were offered tangible benefits for making ‘it’ secret. After the first
incident of such abusive sex, they felt ashamed and were frightened due to fear of
disclosure in the family. With such repeated incidents, as reported, a boy generally
became concerned about his feminine psyche: a misfit to societal norm and
practice. Later on, due to feminine behaviors, they reported encountering serial
harassments, beginning at home, extending, and unfolding to all spheres of life.
Feminine boys were abused at schools, resulting in discontinuation of studies.
Many were abused at workplaces, eventually ousted from jobs. Most involved in
hijra, giri or sex trade, were again harassed verbally, physically, and sexually.
Wherever or whenever these incidents had taken place, they could not disclose to
anyone and sought support. Not the perpetrators, rather hijra were accused and
punished in most cases. As a result; their human dignity and self-esteem were
diminished. They reported feeling worthless and unfit to family and society.
The relevant factors such as behavior of transgender people, societal norms and
structure, minor social identities, and religion lead to the social exclusion of
transgender people in Pakistan. This social exclusion leads to further problems
such as begging and immoral activities.
Suggested Solutions:
Public Awareness:
Social life exists of people and surrounding environment. The most hurt and hate is
caused by the people of society. If the people are aware of the fact that being a
transgender doesn’tmean alien. They have the same social values and expect same
from social life. Spreading this information can eliminate approximately 85% of
the challenges transgender has to face in social life. Some of the important aspect
and steps as mentioned below.
Teachers teaching respect
We can clearly notice from interviews and studies that transgender people were
abused in early age. Where they lost self-respect and social survival will. If the
teachers teach new generation about respect and understanding of transgender
people there won’t be any harassment or abuse for innocent children.
Understanding of Transgender existence
We all were made by one creator. There were no difference or racism for our
creation. We all were born the same and breath same air, have same feelings and
emotions. One thing that cause most of the harassment and hate for transgender
people. It is just because they act different than the society expect from a specific
gender. If some workshops or proper training in offices teach people about
transgender rights. There will be better opportunities and easy to work
environment for transgender persons.
Education for Transgender:
Society behavior aside, transgender behavior causes a judgmental scenario for
other genders. If a transgender feel different or wants to act different than his
physical bodyrepresent. He/she should be able to express those feelings in good
way. Government have issued rights for transgender persons. But most of the
transgender persondon’tknow how to avail those rights and benefits because of
lack in education. This issue would be greatly reduced if a transgender person
know how to avail benefits in life.
Making a Living
Earlier we discussed how studies can benefit survival. Similarly making better
possibilities for transgender people can solve most problems of society. If a
transgender personhave proper living and money to utilize for their desire. There
won’t be any begging or abusive occupations in transgender.
We asked one of our interviewed transgender person, about choosing prostitution.
Her answer was so shocking to us because she shared her story with us. Where she
started a life with supportive family and siblings. She did her intermediate studies
in good grades. Her family wasn’t able to afford university expenses so she tried
for a job in call center. But instead of promoting a single persontrying to earn for
her own studies. She was harassed and sexually abused by the colleagues. As in
our country families don’ttake actions against such cruel acts. Because of family
image and they blamed her for working outside. She left working but staying home
and doing nothing was not what she expected from her life. So she started to look
for other transgender persons. But sadly she only found transgender people as the
lowest creatures of society. Where they had to choosebegging, prostitution or
performers. So instead of getting abused like that in society she had no choice but
to go with other transgender people. And the only reason for joining transgender
society was because they understood her suffering and gave her respect.
We can clearly see how hard our society makes for a transgender personto survive
in social environment. Just providing them social security and making sure they get
their rights would be a huge step to prevent them from choosing wrong ways of
making a living.
Final Thoughts:
This study will help to understand the phenomenon of social exclusion of
Transgender people and also help to understand the underlined determinants of
social exclusion of Transgender people and whether this exclusion has positive or
negative impacts on the status of Transgender people particularly and a society as
a whole. Also this study will help in the acknowledgement of the issues and can
help to derive meaningful policies in order to cope with the issues that are
compelling transgender people to not participate in societal mainstream activities.

This is the only reason for cruelly treatment, racism, hate and discrimination. All of above treatment in social life and crime for receiving all this hateis just the existent. Transgender people are given their characteristics not by choice but by nature’s conditions. They are equally human as any other male or female living on this planet. Their feelings, emotions and dreams are equally important as any other human. Social life never supports the transgender existence and this ends up making their life a continue struggle. Transgender word is not just complexity of gender identity. It’s also for those person who don’t feel the same about being a specific gender (male and having female habits). This research attempts to make better understanding with transgender persons, by visiting real-time challenges and interviewing people suffering social hate. As Awais said, “Only way to know pain is to suffer it!” We choose real person because only they can share what real life and social issues they had to and still facing in order to survive. We can only try and show their life image. But the real deal starts when this research is put into action. We recommend using this research to educate other students and introduce its awareness so social hate for transgender can be reduced. They deserve the rights to live and fulfill dreams as anyone else on this planet. Challenges: Our society is, however, very harsh on gender-variant people. Some transgender people have lost their families, their jobs, their homes and their support. Transgender children may be subject to ignorance at home, at school or in their communities. These are not the root of their transgender identity; rather, they are the side effects of society’s intolerance of transgender people (Transphobia). Where to go?
  • 2. Transgender people face discrimination in our society, in areas ranging from appropriate medical care to parental rights, from education to employment. And perhaps most common, transgender people face harassment and discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, and educational institutes- mistreatment that threatens their freedom to work and live safely in their own communities. Where to study? Normally transgender people are uneducated and if there are any educated ones then they have only completed their primary or sometimes secondary level education. During their educational period they are subjected to abuse and harassment by their teachers and classmates, and if not, then they are taken as a character that people make fun off. Where to Work? Government provides very little space for transgender people to do white collar jobs. Due to little or no opportunity transgender people indulge in professions like dancing, performing on stages and begging. If by chance a transgender person gets employment in any organization, then because of his behavior he suffers the issue of harassment in the organization, or else they are fired from jobs. Such circumstances contribute to the unavailability of professions for transgender and hence they become self-employed. Where their life ends Old age of transgender people is the most critical period of their life as they have no connections with their families, so there is no one to support them at old ages except their disciples who sometimes give them money or food. Why Choose Unethical Occupations Most transgender people described first sexual intercourse experiences at the age of 8-12 years. The first sexual relationship in most cases was developed with male relatives, neighbors, or lodging tutors. Most of these incidents occurred by force and were unprotected, putting them at risk of transmission of STI/HIV. In some cases, they were offered tangible benefits for making ‘it’ secret. After the first incident of such abusive sex, they felt ashamed and were frightened due to fear of
  • 3. disclosure in the family. With such repeated incidents, as reported, a boy generally became concerned about his feminine psyche: a misfit to societal norm and practice. Later on, due to feminine behaviors, they reported encountering serial harassments, beginning at home, extending, and unfolding to all spheres of life. Feminine boys were abused at schools, resulting in discontinuation of studies. Many were abused at workplaces, eventually ousted from jobs. Most involved in hijra, giri or sex trade, were again harassed verbally, physically, and sexually. Wherever or whenever these incidents had taken place, they could not disclose to anyone and sought support. Not the perpetrators, rather hijra were accused and punished in most cases. As a result; their human dignity and self-esteem were diminished. They reported feeling worthless and unfit to family and society. The relevant factors such as behavior of transgender people, societal norms and structure, minor social identities, and religion lead to the social exclusion of transgender people in Pakistan. This social exclusion leads to further problems such as begging and immoral activities. Suggested Solutions: Public Awareness: Social life exists of people and surrounding environment. The most hurt and hate is caused by the people of society. If the people are aware of the fact that being a transgender doesn’tmean alien. They have the same social values and expect same from social life. Spreading this information can eliminate approximately 85% of the challenges transgender has to face in social life. Some of the important aspect and steps as mentioned below. Teachers teaching respect We can clearly notice from interviews and studies that transgender people were abused in early age. Where they lost self-respect and social survival will. If the teachers teach new generation about respect and understanding of transgender people there won’t be any harassment or abuse for innocent children.
  • 4. Understanding of Transgender existence We all were made by one creator. There were no difference or racism for our creation. We all were born the same and breath same air, have same feelings and emotions. One thing that cause most of the harassment and hate for transgender people. It is just because they act different than the society expect from a specific gender. If some workshops or proper training in offices teach people about transgender rights. There will be better opportunities and easy to work environment for transgender persons. Education for Transgender: Society behavior aside, transgender behavior causes a judgmental scenario for other genders. If a transgender feel different or wants to act different than his physical bodyrepresent. He/she should be able to express those feelings in good way. Government have issued rights for transgender persons. But most of the transgender persondon’tknow how to avail those rights and benefits because of lack in education. This issue would be greatly reduced if a transgender person know how to avail benefits in life. Making a Living Earlier we discussed how studies can benefit survival. Similarly making better possibilities for transgender people can solve most problems of society. If a transgender personhave proper living and money to utilize for their desire. There won’t be any begging or abusive occupations in transgender. We asked one of our interviewed transgender person, about choosing prostitution. Her answer was so shocking to us because she shared her story with us. Where she started a life with supportive family and siblings. She did her intermediate studies in good grades. Her family wasn’t able to afford university expenses so she tried for a job in call center. But instead of promoting a single persontrying to earn for her own studies. She was harassed and sexually abused by the colleagues. As in our country families don’ttake actions against such cruel acts. Because of family image and they blamed her for working outside. She left working but staying home and doing nothing was not what she expected from her life. So she started to look
  • 5. for other transgender persons. But sadly she only found transgender people as the lowest creatures of society. Where they had to choosebegging, prostitution or performers. So instead of getting abused like that in society she had no choice but to go with other transgender people. And the only reason for joining transgender society was because they understood her suffering and gave her respect. We can clearly see how hard our society makes for a transgender personto survive in social environment. Just providing them social security and making sure they get their rights would be a huge step to prevent them from choosing wrong ways of making a living. Final Thoughts: This study will help to understand the phenomenon of social exclusion of Transgender people and also help to understand the underlined determinants of social exclusion of Transgender people and whether this exclusion has positive or negative impacts on the status of Transgender people particularly and a society as a whole. Also this study will help in the acknowledgement of the issues and can help to derive meaningful policies in order to cope with the issues that are compelling transgender people to not participate in societal mainstream activities.
