SC5 focuses on addressing the effects of climate change through climate modeling, impact assessment, and developing climate services. The Big Data Europe (BDE) project aims to help users access and utilize large climate datasets through the development of an integrated data platform. BDE will engage climate researchers and stakeholders to design, build, and evaluate a prototype platform to facilitate big data use in climate science. Workshops will gather requirements, review architectures, and evaluate the platform and its pilots. BDE seeks to provide climate experts and technical specialists tools to better handle, publish, and apply big data resources.

 Problem: Users have access to publically available “Big” datasets but
most often lack expertise and knowledge in handling and using such data.
Progress induced by “Big Data” is slow! although climate science has
become one of the most data rich domains in terms of volume, velocity
and variety.
 BDE focuses on the elicitation of requirements from the relevant user

6.  Management and manipulation of climate “Big Data” is a
challenge for organizations engaged in climate research
and services and involves techniques and tools for :
o Storage (e.g. 65 TB of observational and model data
added daily on UK, ECMWF Meteorological & Archival
Retrieval System)
o Analysis
o Visualisation
o Combination of climate model results with data from
other areas, e.g., agricultural production, population
distribution, economic activities …
 BDE aims at providing an integrated stack of tools to
handle, publish and use large-scale data resources.

7. Actions within BDE SC5
 As BDE is a C&S action, the plan is to engage people
interested and working in the climate domain using
several tools.
 Together we would like to design, realize and evaluate
the Big Data Integrator Platform infrastructure. The
platform targets the facilitation of “Big Data” usage in
real world examples.
 One of the goals is to provide a comprehensive test bed
for the evaluation of the BDE Aggregator Platform
according to the requirements of SC5 by compiling a
pilot use case
 The BDE platform will offer the opportunities of the
latest RTD to the interested participating third parties,

 A series of workshops:

workshop (Brussels, June 15, 2015): highlight requirements
for the Big Data Integrator Platform
o 2nd workshop (2016): review the architecture for a prototype
implementation (1st
pilot)
o 3rd Workshop (2017): evaluate and showcase the platform (2nd
pilot)
 Build a “Big Data” interest group around the domain of climate. We
