Whether it’s education, health, poverty relief, access to clean water, climate change, human rights or social justice, organizations in these fields tackle some of the most complex problems of our time. Their stories are not only compelling, they are often critical. Many social enterprises, such as these, also diligently stockpile a treasure trove of valuable data that can potentially be extremely useful to the general public or can shed light on the impact of their work.
However, the data is often locked away in spreadsheets and is usually not made accessible to the public, or at least not in a useful way. Consequently change-makers such as these need help bringing clarity to their stories and educating the public about social issues whenever possible. Whether in print or online, this data needs to be structured and edited into powerful, visually stunning narratives. And typography plays a major role in establishing clear information hierarchies and striking an engaging tone for each audience. After all, data is just data unless it both informs and inspires.
Deroy Peraza is a founding partner and creative director at Hyperakt. Deroy works at the crossroads of social entrepreneurship and design and relentlessly searches for meaningful challenges. He loves juggling vastly different projects such as data visualizations, brand identities, website interfaces and inventing products such as ChampsRing.com and LetsSwap.it. http://www.hyperakt.com

This presentation focuses on how communities in economic decline, and communities in central Appalachia specifically, can keep kids, cash, and culture in the community. It includes overarching theory, examples, and lists of resources.

This document discusses using visual empathy to prevent youth bullying in the digital age. It notes that while support groups offer anti-bullying programs and resources, their online content lacks visual connection. The document hypothesizes that designing online platforms employing visual empathy could create intimate online communities for youth to engage with anti-bullying messages on a deeper, more personal level anonymously, encouraging participation and empathy to counter bullying. It provides statistics on bullying, examples of successful campaigns promoting self-esteem and authenticity, and an anti-bullying video to make its points.
Generation Y Volunteerism and Civic Action: Engaging Future Leaders and Entre...Sean P. Bender
This document discusses Generation Y (Gen Y) volunteerism and civic engagement. Gen Y, also known as Millennials, refers to those born between 1979-1984. They make up around 35% of the world's population. Gen Y values having a meaningful philosophy of life and prefers communication through mobile devices and social media like Facebook. While brand loyal, they are not always loyal to specific businesses. Gen Y desires a sense of community and influence from their peers. They want to start their own businesses and be agents of change through civic engagement and volunteerism.

The document discusses how new media and technology impact youth work and learning opportunities. It notes that privileged youth integrate computers seamlessly at home, while lower-income youth often move directly from intensive high school jobs to full-time work. However, digital media have created new entrepreneurial avenues for youth to market their skills. While some view new media training as job preparation, others see it as busywork. Some youth monetize their media skills or hobbies, but most engage in amateur non-market activities for enjoyment rather than pay. In conclusion, socioeconomic status influences how youth experience and utilize new technologies.
Does your organization or company have a plan to market to and work with Millennials (some 80 million strong)? Before you start, take a look at this presentation which shares 10 realities of this generation and three proven ways you can begin to find and communicate with Generation Y.
The document discusses tensions between fear and hope in today's global culture, with some economies and individuals driven more by fear and pessimism while others embrace optimism. It also examines related trends like renewed focus on self-reliance, simplicity, connectivity through social networks, generosity, and rebuilding trust through understanding and flexibility.
The future of fundraising in a networked societyBryan Miller
The document discusses how fundraising will change in the future due to a more networked society. Some key points are:
1) Traditional social constraints are dissolving and people get information from personalized networks rather than authority figures. This will impact fundraising approaches.
2) Donors have less tolerance for interruptive fundraising techniques and want organizations to engage them through their interests.
3) The future of fundraising involves peer-to-peer advocacy online and offline, utilizing supporters' networks and social media influences. It will move from interruptive techniques to content supporters engage with.
4) Crowdfunding and online microphilanthropy will play a larger role, allowing donors more choice and involvement in specific projects. Fundraising

Gen Z, born between 1995 and 2009, make up 30% of the world's population. Despite being fluent with technology, they prefer face-to-face communication over digital. Many are interested in becoming entrepreneurs rather than employees after college. They expect brands to have two-way relationships and listen to their opinions. As technology changes rapidly, Gen Z also changes quickly.
The document provides information on several campaigns run by different organizations. It discusses the purposes, aims, and techniques used in campaigns by Shelter, Barnardos, and the Child Health Foundation. For each campaign, the document examines the visual elements like photography, fonts, and color schemes used in promotional materials. It also provides examples of impacts and changes achieved through the campaigns, such as new policies influenced by Barnardos and people helped by Shelter's work.

Ford leads in sales consideration for small and midsize cars, which remain the top two segments considered and purchased. Millennial female buyers are outpacing males at 53% for Ford. Gen Z, born in 1993 and after, will have $10 trillion in purchasing power by 2020 equal to the GDP of over 10 countries. They are digital natives who send 110 texts per day on average and multitask across five screens for 41% of their time outside of school. Gen Z is adept at self-directed research using YouTube and social media for school assignments and are more likely than Millennials to want to have an impact on the world and start their own business.
The newsletter discusses several topics:
1) A survey of American teens' views on the 2008 presidential election and economy.
2) Opportunities for youth programs and grants including film festivals, scholarships, and entrepreneurship awards.

Cristal Festival 2015 - "Creativity in the age of the machines" - Chris Clark...Cristal Events
The document discusses creativity in the digital age and the challenges it presents. It notes that through the internet, knowledge and new ways of sharing it are discovered and invented at a blinding speed. However, it also argues that the internet is not democratic and the consumer is not truly in control. It warns that with constant partial attention online, we gravitate towards the banal. The removal of traditional gatekeepers has been replaced by algorithms and tech platforms that do not necessarily elevate quality or important issues. The document calls for brands to be purposeful, act as tastemakers not followers, and create high quality experiences in order to reach for the counterintuitive and provide value in a sea of low-quality online content
Redlining was coined in 1960 by a sociologist James McKnight.
The term basically refers to financial lenders drawing a redline around communities that they would invest in due to poor financial capabilities.
These areas were often occupied by people of color.
This practice encouraged institutionalized racism to run through the streets of these communities.
Poorly funded schooling
Major health impacts
Larger environmental issues
Less opportunity for community growth and well-being
This document discusses various social, moral, and economic issues that can be topics of debate. It provides definitions of key terms like "issue" and categorizes different types of issues. Social issues influence societies as a whole and include problems like teenage pregnancy, child labor, and discrimination. Moral issues relate to beliefs about right and wrong, such as premarital sex and same-sex marriage. Economic issues concern the organization of money, industry, and trade in an area and include unemployment, poverty, and income inequality. The document provides examples to illustrate different types of issues and emphasizes that one issue can have social, moral, and economic aspects.
