My experience might be a good example of how social interaction has evolved during the last 20 years. We have added new
“communication tools”. The more consequence is that people have more contact with other people they don´t see everyday…
4. 1.2 Evolution
Keeping contact with people: 1996-2015
How will evolve
in the near
future?
…During the last 20 years we have multiplied the number of people we have contact with thanks to technology. 30 years
ago people were limited to be in contact only with the people physically around them in their daily life. My grand-father
had three brothers who emigrated to Venezuela in the 50’s. They exchanged a few letters that took weeks to arrive
until they lost contact. Today, I exchange messages with friends in other countries everyday….
5. 2. Current situation and next 10 years
Can we get closer to people far from us?
…However, we are at a point where you can reach a person in the other side of the world cheaply and in a matter of
seconds. This is why people that make use of these technologies are reaching their point of saturation, meaning that
new telecommunication technologies will not bring increases in contact with distant people like before…
6. 3. What can we expect?
So nothing will change in the next years?
…As we can already talk to people like if they were in our living room, send them pictures that take seconds to arrive and
connect ourselves with a tablet to celebrate the birthday with distant friends… what else can change? Behaviour and
culture will still change in certain fields…
…So I don´t think social interaction will change much in the next 10 years….
… but 10 years ago I might have thought the same and I would have been wrong….
