Social Entrepreneurship
Social entrepreneurship is the work of a
 social entrepreneur. A social
 entrepreneur is someone who recognizes
a social problem and uses entrepreneurial
 principles to organize, create, and
manage a venture to make a social
 change
Social and Business
Entrepreneurs: The Difference
Business entrepreneurs typically
measure performance in profit and return,
social entrepreneurs assess their success
in terms of the impact they have on
society.
Social entrepreneurs often work through

non-profits and citizen groups, while
business entrepreneurs work in the
private and governmental sectors
IITs : Current Role
 IITs as technology providers
 IITs as technology introducer
 IITs as training grounds for technology
    introduction and usage
 Adding to the intellectual capital of the
    country
IITs are accountable to Society
 With funds coming from the tax payers pocket it
becomes imperative for the IITs to be
    accountable to the society.
 Current initiatives such as NSS, few training
programs, etc. do not justify the status &
potential of IITs & IITians as nation builders.
 This calls for a need to develop an extensive
approach towards nation building with inputs
from IIT staff, students and alumni.
Benefits of Social
           Entrepreneurship
 Forms the financial backbone of all non
profitable work for social cause and
    enhances self sustainability.
 Leverages an asset or capability that you
    already possess.
 Addresses a defined but unsatisfied need
& want in the community, especially in the
    rural areas.
IITs and Social Entrepreneurship
 IITs have the necessary knowledge
resource for initiation of such projects and
    taking social entrepreneurship to the
    desired level in India.
 Knowledge resource is available in the
form of faculty, students & well
    established alumni base.
What can be done?
1. Making social entrepreneurship practices
   a part of student life.
2. Providing opportunities for students to
   engage with the community.
3. Encouraging students to opt for Social
   Entrepreneurship as a career option.
1. Social Entrepreneurship in
           campus

  STUDENTS LOCAL GRAM PANCHAYAT

                 FINALISED
                 PROPOSAL

             FUNDING BY VARIOUS
               GOVT. SCHEMES
Additional Benefits
 Success of such projects is most likely to
    invite proposals from industry.
They can route their corporate social
    responsibility tasks to the student
community via faculty or alumni or
    through direct interaction with students.
BENEFITS TO THE STUDENTS
 It gives them a chance to
       “EARN WHILE THEY LEARN”
 Students get a chance to work on live
projects which makes it highly attractive
for those planning to go for higher
    studies.
2. Students engaging with
             community
 Using NSS as a launch pad to directly
    come in contact with society.
 Work on the dictum of
“The person who faces the problem
    knows the maximum about that
    problem.”
 Deprived folks of society to tell their
    problems along with their likely
solutions to students who will take the
    next action.
3. Social entrepreneurship as a
          career option
 This not only provides a satisfaction out
of serving society but also takes into
    consideration the monetary side of
    one's career.
 Expose students to this option through
    collaboration with social
    entrepreneurship enterprises.
 Independent minded students to benefit
    the most.
The Steps to be taken
Two pronged process at the heart of
 agenda:

1. To be taken up by students.

2. To be taken by the institute.
Steps: By Students
 Blogs
Blogs are a great way of reaching out
to fellow students, thus making efforts
    in social entrepreneurship reaching a
    mass level with participation from
    across the campus.
 Establishment of new entity with
    characteristics of both NSS and
    Entrepreneurship Development
    Council.
Steps: By Institute
 Collaboration with social enterprises
    like Ashoka, etc.
 Symposiums on social
    entrepreneurship inviting experts
    working in this area.
 Establishment of proper Alumni-
    Students interaction channels to equip
    students with wise decision making
    using their vast industry experience.
In a Nutshell
We are hoping that IITs contribute more
to the society in a more meaningful and
effective manner than what IITs are
 doing at present.

Social entrepreneurship is one aspect
where there is ample scope for IITs to
come at par with the hopes of Indian
society to which they are responsible.
THANK
 YOU
